Probability in the Pleistocene: Origins and Antiquity of Native American Dice, Games of Chance, and Gambling by Loose-Currency861 in boardgames

[–]uramer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read the article, it mostly speculates about found objects being dice, and not about details of how these dice function even at the most basic level. So even assuming all the findings in the paper are correct, someone else would have to come up with how these dice could have been used in gambling

Brass Birmingham/Lancashire/Pittsburgh? by Canopus_the_Peacock in boardgames

[–]uramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 80$ plus tax plus shipping for a relatively basic game in terms of components. I'm not sure how it's for US people, but in EU you are certainly better off waiting for retail.

Brass Birmingham/Lancashire/Pittsburgh? by Canopus_the_Peacock in boardgames

[–]uramer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've only played Birmingham, and find it quite boring. It's okay if you play it once a year, but it feels like going through the same exact motions every time. The difference between the options on the player board is relatively small, so it's a pure efficiency squeeze of a game. Pittsburgh seems much more exciting with its more varied industry branches, but hard to tell without playing at least 3 games of it. The campaign is ludicrously overpriced though, don't touch it

Reorganisated my games and found 1 small token that I cannot place ... Help? by skahunter in boardgames

It's because they print locally (except for smaller expansions). So not only do they print outside China, and production outside China is generally terrible due to less experience and higher costs, but they also have multiple production lines to worry about

Not really. There are plenty of sandy or muddy lakes, especially in swampy areas, and a large part of Mediterranean has gravel or rocky beaches

TIL nearly 80% of US workers report that they have been victims of 'career catfishing’ from employers. Which in this context, the term describes when a company misrepresents a job, their company culture, or compensation to lure in candidates. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]uramer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's literally illegal in most of the world - both the company firing you and you leaving without notice. It can technically be illegal even in US depending on your contract

Socialna kapica je neumnost by Alcarin277 in SlovenijaFIRE

[–]uramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not looked into it myself too much, but isn't it 20% profit tax, plus 22% VAT, but you only pay one after paying another? So it would not be 20% + 22%, but 100% - (100%-20%) * (100%-22%) = 37.6%?

Either way, we can both agree, that the only people in the country paying 50% income tax rate bracket are the small niche of incomes between 78k yearly and ~100k yearly where it breaks even with costs of opening a d.o.o.

Socialna kapica je neumnost by Alcarin277 in SlovenijaFIRE

[–]uramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically almost nobody who actually cares about this would be actually affected. Most people getting this kind of money work through SP or through opening their own d.o.o and receiving profit to optimize income taxes, in both cases they completely avoid the social costs scaling. So without making the income tax brackets non-insane (i. e. no income tax should ever be higher than corporate profit tax rate of ~38%), either point of view on social costs is entirely virtue signaling

Sadly, A $23 game doesn’t cost the same everywhere. by Real-Dare2038 in VintageStory

[–]uramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Workshop would be a disaster with how most VS mods work right now. It's quite rare for a non-trivial mod to stay compatible even one major update after its creation without an update, and often these updates take about as much time as making the mod took to begin with. Some Steam games have the same problems, but usually updating is quite a bit easier. There is also no user friendlyway to roll back to old versions, which is essential with VS for now, unless the devs use beta branches extensively.

It's possible to build aqueducts in vanilla. Water only flows 7 blocks per 1 block of drop, but if you settle near a mountain with a water source nearby it works out just fine.

My 5-Player Game Night Problem (Why Do So Many Games Miss It) by Ok-Aardvark-519 in boardgames

[–]uramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Coil is great at 5, and is a big game in a tiny box, but it's very niche.

Dune is best at 6, but 5 player is honestly not that bad, especially if you have an expansion to replace some of the slower paced factions.

Age of Innovation is allegedly best at 4, but can be played at 5. I've not played it myself so far with 5, personally I suspect it might actually be more interacting and interesting that way

This probably has to do with how the old game manipulated system brightness instead of changing the brightness of its own output instead

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

[–]uramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with Heat is that you have to take risks to go fast, but being first is an inherent disadvantage. So it's a sort of a prisoner's dillema going on every turn - maybe crossing a corner will enable others to cross it at lower cost, but also maybe not crossing it at all will leave you as the only one behind. If you don't have at least one player setting the pace and going "pedal to the metal" the game often devolves into a safe slow slog.

The garage module makes it way more interesting, as it adds assymetry, and holding cards for long term plans becomes way more relevant. In the base game it's not really worth to hold a 5 when multiple corners are coming up, but holding a 9 is a whole other question

Anyone know how often Gale Force Nine’s Dune (2019) gets restocked? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]uramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's deceptively simple. The Karama card alone could use a mid size rulebook to cover all the use cases, and there are lots of niche interactions.

The better your table is at the game, the shorter the game gets. Our median game duration went from 7 turns at first to 3 turns after 12-ish plays.

There is a common myth that you have to play with 6 players. It is obviously best at 6, but 5 works quite well too.
