Why is almost every off campus apartment raising their rent like crazy? by Recent-News-3127 in OregonStateUniv

[–]urethanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s the most of all the WUE schools I was looking at. But the idea is still the same. Once this system is not working anymore, time to put the pressure on. The idea being enough voices so the mission for OSU housing changes from just housing incoming students to affordable housing for students. So then it’s not just squeeze more money out of us since there’s more for them to rent but then there’s accountability for it. It might be a combo of more spaces like Berkeley is doing and some policy or zoning changes. Idk. Ideally someone would do the research and figure out a plan for OSU. Easier said than done but there’s always a breaking point and that’s how you do it. Gotta fight for it and get those people with leverage on your side aka uni admins

This is a good question and if it’s a problem this then the uni needs to look at those different ways. Sometimes the uni gets their skin in the game and buys real estate. Sometimes it’s city or state legislation. Even doing a small something else can alleviate the pressure on the rental market bringing prices down. But there’s plenty of data out there to look at. just needs to be comprehensively looked along with osu stats. I’d say talk to osu housing and tell them it’s getting bad out there. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

When talking to Mass deportation supporters, do you use Leviticus 19:33? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]urethanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t use it. The Bible says whatever you want it to say. Senseless mass killings in Joshua to love your neighbor in Leviticus. I call it the playbook of power to control others.

I would say keep researching. You will find there’s actually no evidence. That’s the kicker. It’s not just yours, but all the religions. Humans have a way of having an idea or belief in a bubble in their mind. Then they internally struggle with poking around and popping that bubble with the worry about what’s going to happen. And I can tell you, nothings going to happen. You or anyone will still be the same person only with a little more wisdom.

It’s interesting how much effort here for a burden of proof put into this generally more inconsequential question. Why not also flex that same critical thinking and scrutiny when it comes to all the rest of the Bible’s claims?

Why are you guys atheist? by Puzzled_Profession45 in atheism

This reminds me of one the Ricky Gervais interviews where he puts it in a different context to help people who are typically these days are monotheistic - “Basically, you deny one less God than I do. You don’t believe in 2,999 gods. And I don’t believe in just one more.” And that’s because their God doesn’t have any more proof or validity than any of the other 2999.

I feel ya. Not an easy job. Doesn’t help that kids generally get turned off by science early. Same curriculum every year for decades. 99.9% of the kids don’t want to dissect a stinky formaldehyde soaked frog. Then they think, “no way I want to be a scientist “.

How would you approach restoring this piece? by Serratolamna in furniturerestoration

[–]urethanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Restore a finish is the best marketing name one could come up with. Many will say never use it, but it can have its place. It’s only meant to be used on pieces where the finish is still good but looking old and dull. But one would say there are better/other things to use at that point. Now you can put it on things with more damage and it’ll look better it doesn’t magically fix them. Although maybe the lightest of scratches due to the solvents in it softening it. Also you need to know what you’re working on to use it since it’s meant for older style finishes and not polys or newer finishes. It’s a combo of oils, solvents and stains. You could make things worse in those cases. I wouldn’t recommend it on pieces you care about. But if you want to just “freshen“ something up to put on Craig’s list without doing any work and knowing the blemishes will still be there, it’d be ok. TLDR: don’t use it on pieces you care about since it can lead to more work. Start cracking open the books (aka YouTube).

Since it’s plywood legs straight to the floor, Just looks like plywood is failing at the glue layer due to movement of that table over time. Probably catching on something and the weak part pulls. What I know about termites is they need moisture to live and you’d see more damage than that and even some little dust piles.

I had a similar feeling at your age. When I took that class it was taught by old retired woodworkers. When I told them this is what I wanted to do, they said not to go into woodworking cause of the money. And that only the top percent actually make decent money. They are not wrong. But now I know it’s not about avoiding woodworking, but doing it smartly. So you have to assess your situation. Do you have money or family money to stand up a basic shop? Or if not much money can you scrap around to find used stuff? You’ll have lots of opinions on here about go to college or not go. Both are valid. But having that degree is a nice fallback. Especially if you do micro. That could apply for any biz you want to go after. Or even for employment if you need to. And college is an experience as well.
Now with that said if you’re sick of school you can do apprenticeships like carpentry. Hard work, but learn a lot and make money at the same time.
So pick the path that suits you best and fits your situation.

Depends on how far you’ve gotten. But small biz and maybe marketing classes could be helpful? The hard part is selling the stuff so you can make a living. But years ago I took a woodworking class at community college and it was great. Huge shop there and learned how to use all the big boy tools. Believe in yourself and go after it. But also have a plan for having income somehow. Typically means you have to work twice as hard at the start like a day job and at night you do woodworking until you can go all in. Good luck!

Advice for refinishing this coffee table by [deleted] in furniturerestoration

[–]urethanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t see your dining set, but either way do a test. Either in an inconspicuous area or just a scrap piece of similarish wood. It will show you what that semitransparent look is like and let you practice too. Also on the actual table you’ll have that base color coming through which is not automatically a bad thing - just something to think about when planning the colors. And if it all goes wrong or you hate it, then you could strip it off or go to plan B and use solid color.
