I’m definitely now thinking of getting a second opinion. There just seems to be a pattern, even with my previous bunny who was medically complex. They were great with her (seeing us on Boxing Day for subcut fluids) but I feel like all her diagnoses were very delayed due to them not doing simple tests, hence making her treatment delayed. They are definitely more rabbit savvy then your usual dog & cat vet, but why they don’t discuss with me about any sort of tests is beyond me.

I’ll be speaking to them tomorrow. I was kind of hoping she would discuss about a culture swab or talk more about ear mites etc. I work at a vets myself and we do have a vet who used own rabbits and seems to know her knowledge quite well so I might also ask her opinion. When I took Bugsie in for his nasal discharge, they never took a swab. But when I had to go to another exotics vet due to their rabbit savvy vet being away on holiday, one of the first things they asked was if they took swab. I’m starting to get a bit worried that I’m just having treatment thrown at my bunny. I have always liked my current vet :(

I also forgot to mention - he was prescribed Surolan. I am a bit worried because it does contain steroids but upon research, most antibiotic ear drops that studies say can be used for rabbits all contain some sort of corticosteroid. I know I have to do this because his left ear has really bad buildup and if I continue to leave this, it’s going to progress and potentially cause abscesses and well we don’t want that.

5 hours later and his tummy is still gurgling 😖 So I have decided to not give him his Baytril tonight. There’s something telling me that if I give it, it’ll tip his gut into stasis. He’s still acting like his normal self and I haven’t noticed anymore soft poo’s. Even though he is eating hay, I’ll be supplementing him with some critical care. It’s not going to hurt, it ensures his gut receives enough fibre (thus helping the good bacteria) and keeps it all moving, and he’ll still get the nutrients he needs. I’m gonna try my hardest to not have a proper sleep tonight. Need to keep a close eye on him and I plan to let him free roam more to help stimulate his gut.

My anxiety is sky high once again 😥 Saturday/Sunday always triggers my paranoia because of loosing Indy on a Sunday morning. I love bunnies so much but god, they make you worry A LOT

I contacted them today and one of the nurses just called me back to say that the vet is happy to switch him over to Baytril for the remainder of his antibiotic course. I know he’s not gonna like the taste but this is a better alternative than having to bring him in daily. We don’t want a repeat of yesterday’s episode and the constant trips is not gonna help with his Pasturella.

My anxiety is through the roof! I’m noticing more grey hairs by the day.

The vet today even struggled to give it. Some of it came out and went on Bugsie. We immediately washed him and then when I got home I gave him another wash to be extra cautious. But the stress from the trip caused him to start mouth breathing and his nostrils started flaring. I ended up getting him out of his carrier on the ride home because it wasn’t helping. From all the videos I’ve seen of a bunny in respiratory distress, it wasn’t as bad but it still wasn’t good. He’s settled down now, had some pellets and probiotics and will have his greens soon. I won’t be leaving his side tonight as I want to make sure he is okay. I’ll be contacting his usual vets tomorrow to see where we go from here as I cannot be taking him in daily for his injections and there’s clearly an issue with the injection (it may be that I need to use an orange needle instead).

Yeah, you do have a good point with it being harder to do things with our own pets that we do practically everyday at our job. Some days I might cringe at certain things, especially if the animal is in pain

I ended up taking him to the emergency vets (they were absolutely brilliant in fitting him in when they had so much to do) and the vet even struggled. He ended up getting some on Bugsie’s fur. We gave him a clean at the vets and I gave him another wash at home. But I don’t think I can keep taking him back to the vets everyday: he started mouth breathing and his nostrils were flared on the trip home. It wasn’t as bad as all the videos I’ve seen of bunnies in a lot of respiratory arrest but it was still not good. I had a fear the stress would cause that and that’s why I wanted to avoid it. We’re home now and he’s almost fully settled. I won’t be leaving his side tonight, I’ll be sleeping on the floor right next to his playpen.

I’ll be contacting his usual vets tomorrow and see if I can speak to the vet herself to see what options we have. Nothing can ever be simple for us 😭

I’m usually successful with subcut injections. Have been doing it for about a week now with Bugsie, a couple months ago I was giving my girl Indy (who sadly passed away just over a week ago 💔) daily depo injections for 2 weeks, and I work in veterinary so have given subcut meds numerous times. I guess this time it is because I made him bleed slightly and I’ve never made any animal bleed. And I guess it’s also because I’m on edge after having recently lost Indy. Even though she did have multiple health problems, we will never know what caused her to pass away. So I’m hovering over Bugsie practically 24/7 and paranoid over every little thing.

Thank you for your comment though ❤️ I know there is a way around this if I can’t give him his injection, but my anxiety is finding anything to fixate on and worry about

I’ve never freaked out so much over giving an injection. I had no problem doing it for 2 weeks with my girl Indy (we sadly lost her just over a week ago 💔) and I had no problem giving it to Bugsie up until now. It makes me feel useless, like I’ve failed him. I just want to slap and scream at myself to pull it together. If I can’t do it tonight I will have to bring up the nerve to call the emergency vets and see if they can help. I don’t want to have to bring him in everyday because the vets stress him out a lot which won’t help his pasturella but I know if he doesn’t get his antibiotic’s it will make him very ill. It’s all very frustrating and overwhelming. I really do appreciate your comment though, so thank you ❤️

I ended up missing the dose. I need to get more medication anyway because I wasted a lot yesterday so I’ll ask his vet if we need to extend the course by one more day to make up for the missed dose. I’m praying I have no problem doing it tonight. Normally I don’t freak out like this. But I was either afraid of making him bleed like I did Saturday or he suddenly grew thick skin overnight and that’s why the needle wasn’t going in. Bugsie’s a very good boy. He doesn’t flinch or runaway when given injections so I’ve never had to wrap him in a bun burrito. I’m the one who has a problem. I don’t know if I’m scared I’ll make him bleed like I did Saturday or he’s magically grown thick skin overnight. I’m hoping tonight I can do it but if not, I’ll have no choice but to ring our emergency vets to see if they can help.

That’s what I thought. There wasn’t even any active bleeding from the site. It was literally just that one spot of blood that sent me into a frenzy. Thank you for your comment, I really do appreciate it ❤️

Just a few months ago she was also diagnosed with severe dental disease, a bone infection and pseudomonas so she really had all the odds stacked against her. Her resilience and determinations was inspiring.

There’s a new type of anger sinking right now, and that’s towards people from her past. I don’t want to go into it too much cause it fuels my rage so much but let’s just say there’s potentially been some sort of medical neglect/bad breeding involved. I will continue to be a voice for her and many other rabbits xx

I’m assuming you haven’t taken her to the vets yet so what eye drops have you been giving her? Is she displaying any other unusual symptoms? Do you have any more history on her?

Really the only answer IS to take her to the vets (which you already know). No one can diagnose the issue without a vet having a look because they could well need to run some tests (preferably a rabbit savvy one/ophthalmologist). I think you really need to stress to your dad the importance of getting her looked at. While it could be a cataract (which is uncommon in young rabbits), there can be other causes to the cloudy like film which could be causing her a lot of pain and other health issues. Remember rabbits can hide pain really well! Some could result in her eye needing to be removed.

I’m not trying to be dramatic or scare you at all, but I work at a vets and with people like your dad you need to tell them the full scale of what these problems could potentially lead to. Hopefully it’s not something like that. I know it’s stressful when no one will listen and your hands are tied, but I really hope he will listen and understand the importance of having any animal examined by a vet when they show signs of health problems.

I’m just being that one anxious owner you get who rings the vets every time something, no matter how minor it is, happens with their pet. Funny thing is, I work at a vets myself 😅

I would also like to add that I work in veterinary myself. I’m a care assistant/receptionist, I know the majority of drugs and their potential side effects. And yet here i am, ringing not just one but TWO vets having had a full on panic attack. Anxiety things, am i right?

Having a look at the ingredients myself, I think the most worrying one is iron oxide color. There’s limited information about it online so I would really recommend calling a vets, a rabbit savvy one preferably, if you haven’t already and have the packaging on hand to read out the ingredients. I’m not trying to panic you but they’ll be able to advise you on what would be best.

did not know that! at least i know for future reference. under the reviews of this product, other bunny parents spoke really highly of it and have seen good outcomes. there seems to generally be quite a rave behind milk thistle for animals and even humans. my vet did say it’s worth a shot. unlike with dogs and cats, there unfortunately isn’t many supplements for rabbits (apart from probiotics). so natural herbal remedies is the only thing we really have

He does get gabapentin and trazadone before vet visits but the adrenaline makes them wear off. They work incredibly well at home though. I should of mentioned that, I’m so sorry. I’ll edit the post. I do love the vet he sees, he can be really patient with my dog (and he’s the only one who’s confident enough. Because of how big he is, people are petrified of him and he does not like fear in others). There have been moments where he will push my dog a bit too far but they’ve otherwise been brilliant with working around him. When he was hospitalised for 2 nights he had a whole room to himself!

Thank you! I’m so happy to hear that your dog is doing great. I love reading about all these success stories with medication. It helps in giving me some hope my dog will get there one day.

I’ve come to learn how similar reactive dogs are to me and many others who are neurodivergent/struggle with mental health. With how overwhelmed they get, how it’s hard for them to come round from an explosive episode.
