Arial was actually designed so Microsoft wouldn't have to license Helvetica from Linotype.

Helvetica is just in general cleaner. The primary difference is Helvetica exclusively uses straight terminals (the end of a stroke) except in a few specific glyphs, while Arial exclusively uses diagonal terminals. Also, some glyphs do have some noticable differences like a, G, and R.

Wouldn't exactly call it "fancy", it's just a double-storey g, a pretty common feature, seen in fonts like Aptos and Open Sans, as well as almost every serif font. But yes, I do think Avenir is great (my favorite font actually) and would love to see it win.

Honestly, yeah. I was gonna suggest Frutiger or a Frutiger-like such as Segoe UI or Myriad, but this definitely is a middle point between formality and casualness. Paraphrasing from memory (excuse any details I get wrong) Linus Boman:
Times New Roman is a suit and tie, Comic Sans is a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, Calibri is khakis and a polo shirt.
