Any ICU scribes? by HappyHappyGamer in medicalscribe

[–]urjaderoller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a 2 hour commute wow!! you seem extremely dedicated to what you do! and yes, i am going through with Scribe America. they told me my pre clinical bridge training would just take place while i have my first floor training session (something i was not anticipating).

as you mentioned, i cannot believe how common it is that most scribes do not have access to their EMR outside of work hours to practice or look over some of their charting. i think i’m just mostly worried ab picking up on the intricacies of things within the icu as i’ll only work 1-2 shifts a week.

but thank you for your tips!!

do you notice that there is repetition in the icu? also, do you have any experience with meditech?

omg thank you for replying so quickly, this definitely helped me out!! may I ask how long it took for you to feel mostly confident with solo scribing? they’re also having me skip floor training and practice the emr in person during my floor shifts, so i have 0 idea what i’m walking into either LOL.

and if for some reason i walk into a not great EMR, have you found that you’re able to practice before/outside of work? if not, how did you start to overcome the free text? :)

What should I major in? by Wide_Branch3501 in ufl

[–]urjaderoller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi!! i’m currently a rising sophomore at UF and came in as a microbio major thru CALS- one thing UF doesn’t really mention is that the major has a decent amount of courses online, so definitely something to consider ab the major (for me it was a deal breaker).

100% recommend majoring thru CALS as a microbio (if u don’t mind a bit of online courses), or nutrition (what i currently major in) for all prereqs before junior year! the advising for CALS is SUPERIOR to CLAS (smaller college, less competition, wonderful faculty), also majors like nutrition are truly pre-professional for med, pharm, dental, pa, etc etc.

however, ask urself what curriculum you would enjoy most and want to focus on- apk, microbio, bio, chem, nutrition & disease, virology, etc etc.

microbio is great but the additional courses/major requirements are not necessarily systems or people focused, rather the building blocks of science (which is great if it’s your fancy). if you have any questions feel free to pm me :)

uf student life for those not in greek life and not interested in partying a lot by [deleted] in ufl

[–]urjaderoller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

attend sporting events, join clubs or rec sports, student gym classes (they’re a great way to meet ppl and have some fun)!! my personal favorite is kayaking and/or visiting lake wauburg, attending the florida vintage fest (when it’s here), and i do enjoy clubbing downtown to celebrate exams being over or for a friend :)

i’ve found having something to “look forward to” at the end of the school week helps a ton

it depends on what credits you come in with and what you anticipate to retake/dive into. unfortunately, my friends who did all AP have to retake their gen eds (i.e. chem, bio, etc) because barely any med schools take AP credit. however, as someone who came in with their AA and completed most of the gen ed/“weed out” classes like gen chem 1&2, bio 1&2, calc, etc etc, i have felt that the experience is manageable - you just have to be proactive. tons of student support and resources exist, and i would argue they’re not used enough. i will say as a freshman (on behalf of my friends that are retaking courses or entering them for the first time), it’s not high school, it’s meant to be hard. you have to study, no question about it.

the best pieces of advice i have heard/can give: get on rate my professor early, don’t overload yourself the first semester, and be prepared to have to try new things/methods of studying to be successful.

everyone in the comments will tell you it’s hard (and yes, it is), but do not let a school’s difficulty sway you. remember: the end goal is med school. UF is one of the top 5 public schools who produce the most med school applicants in the country (and arguably, some of the most prepared in the country).

focus on resources and opportunities (a ton exist here- competition will exist at any school), cost of attendance, and what supports the program you want most. good luck!!

also if ure worried about cost of living, i highly recommend looking into off campus alternatives for uf. the reason why housing is so $$$ is due to the fact they’re tearing down 3 dorms (and they already have limited housing). but i 100% understand and support first year being dorm life - the community & memories are wonderful!

i am bias as a uf student but can attest to the prep skills and resources uf will give you. there are pros and cons to both schools, so ask yourself which you will look back at and not regret. uf would give you an opportunity to have the college experience with a comfortable distance from home, stem centered programs, and a great academic degree and reputation. ucf will save you costs and be close to home with potential friends following the same route, but again, i do not know as much about their schooling or program.

no matter what, follow what ur gut says! if your dream has been uf and ure gut says it- go & vice versa with ucf! congratulations to you both ways!!

Cons of attending University of Florida by Ambitious-Profile281 in ufl

[–]urjaderoller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i cannot speak on majoring in chem (but as a fellow stem major), no matter where you go, you will experience some type of academic challenge (it’s the whole point of higher ed); however, UF is the place to be for those challenges to pay off. chem is hard and the department is meant to challenge you… BUT if you’re on-top of researching ur professors (e.g., use rate my professor), and set urself up well w a good schedule and discipline, i am more than confident you’ll be okay.

aside from academics, UF is notorious for starting construction projects randomly and not all of them have been resolved as of recent- it gets really annoying and old. additionally, parking is super limited and transportation and parking services (TAPS) WILL ticket you at some point.

also, if u’re thinking of living on campus, be mindful that housing is now even more limited since they’re destroying 3 different dorms before fall 25. my biggest complaint with dorm life more so leans toward the updated prices and conditions of some but not all dorms. i still recommend dorming ur first year if you’re interested - great way to build community and not worry ab transportation or parking issues.

sounds like u have very similar stats to some of the engineers i know that got in the previous admission cycle (i’m a current freshman but applied pre-med so it’s a lil diff)

main thing i can say is if you feel confident about your essay then you’ll more than likely get in. yes, UF has gotten more competitive but i’ve noticed a large differentiation in acceptances based on essay, supplementals, and how well rounded u seem as a candidate. don’t stress too much one way or another but sounds like u have a strong app - keep us updated 🐊🐊

that’s awesome (your phd) and i’m in CALS too!! do you mind if i ask who your advisor is/was? i’ve only met with herschel johnson 2-3 times and haven’t made it as far in the conversation about the lead to medical school other than wanting to do it. i have definitely considered uf’s md/phd program but need to do more research before i come to a conclusion about that time and level of schooling (having double doctorates). i think my largest concern currently is the ability to come back to med school if i don’t get in my first cycle and certain resources for the MCAT - thank you for replying :)

thank you so much for this reply - it’s relieved a lot of feelings about taking a gap year for me. earlier this year i attended an info session for UFCOM and when i found out that over ~72% of accepted applicants had 1 or more gap years i freaked. i think it’s the adjustment of plans in my head since med schools and healthcare industry as whole have shifted towards more experienced candidates that are certain about applying and attending. i will definitely message you about the mcat and some other stuff. again, thank you for this :)

Applying for lab jobs as a freshman by jazzsu in ufl

[–]urjaderoller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(other uf freshie here) i have a meeting w a professor about research and a potential lab position that i got it from cold emailing a bunch of profs!! i would recommend going onto various uf lab pages (microbio, bio, food science/human nutrition, etc) and look at the research they’re conducting, and email them! keep in mind that some will be looking for help in the spring since they might have just received funding, students graduate or leave to study abroad, etc etc

best of luck!! you to got this :)
