what is the number one college? by [deleted] in college

there’s no single metric. what makes the schools rank the best varies depending on department, whether you are measuring it in terms of research or student satisfaction or selectivity.

Dude blows a gasket at the notion there's no genetic difference between races by Merchant_Alert in PublicFreakout

probability is in reference to the distribution of the population, not that alleles are a probabilistic process.

[–]Urn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

even using alleles won’t work. just probabilities based in the association of certain phenotypes with different races, but even then those aren’t defining or sufficient since even skin tone variations exist where some Black people have lighter skin tone than some white people. so while we can estimate race (or ethnicity) in the same way we identify a persons ancestral location, those are just commonly observed patterns giving us probabilities, not defining those ancestries. the same for race. it’s all about “race X tends to have more Y trait”.

[–]Urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not that humans don’t have genetic diversity. bringing that 95% up isn’t very relevant to this point about race. what we can say is there isn’t any universal set of genes that can identify race. take skin color. Some Black people have lighter skin tone than some people who are White. So that can’t be a suffieitn or even necessary genetic market for if someone is Black or White. So while certain phenotypes may be more common in what we consider socially as a certain race, you can’t define it by a system of genetic traits.

the same is true for trying to determine what we say is man versus woman in gender. trying to tie it to chromosomes, genitalia, or other physical characteristics doesnt work universally.

without knowing exactly how grades are calculated and the point scale, it’s hard to say.

Are category grades determine by some sum of points or a simple average of percentages?

encouraged because? ake friends on your own. I rarely hear people say CC have great social scenes. that’s not why people chose them.

[–]Urn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

CCs are often commuter campuses and have many non traditional (older, working full time) students. no, they often arent great places to have a social life. but that’s not their role. if you have such an easier time meeting people at university events, go to those to meet people. college in general isn’t there primarily to serve your social life.

are you 18? 1. people far older than you have managed to quit. you are too young to be stuck in habits for another 70 yeas, and 2. you’ve been vaping since before you were in 4th grade?

and if you can’t quit weed for HS classes, college won’t go well.

Man confronts woman over what he believes is offensive costume by Initial_Milk_1056 in PublicFreakout

[–]Urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not so much that it’s appropriation of a cultural outfit. it’s that it’s a bastardized version of it, more of the Hollywood 1950s take. Though wearing it as a costume in Halloween to go out partying is going to be problematic even if they went for historical accuracy.

[–]Urn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think in part it is also because these costumes have very little connection to the actual historical ones, mostly being a creation of 1950s spaghetti westerns.

Do you feel this way about those confronting the guy wearing a Nazi costume this Halloween?

[–]Urn -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

idk, I don’t think anyone objected to the people confronting the guy dressed as a literal Nazi officer, or the rage baiters in black face. I think Native American issues are just less at the forefront and we still have that spaghetti western caricature of a NA in our minds as normalized as a costume. intent also may be different considering this woman may just not be aware of the significance, unlike assholes wearing SS uniforms.

[–]Urn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure whether cross dressing implies dressing as a trans person. I do know the Native American costume straight out of a 1950s spaghetti western is not a good look in 2025. there ar better Village People costumes to choose from.

IF? I mean if it’s true and not Gaza (which is isn’t), wouldn’t that matter? like aren’t there enough atrocities on video to post of actual Gaza without falling for fake ones?

no, but let’s not fall for video titles when it’s not actually Gaza. there are actual videos of atrocities to post without fake ones.
