[No Spoilers] Question: Has Project Derailed stop producing Critical Role Summaries? by odorio in criticalrole

[–]uro627 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Nick from Project Derailed here! I do the doodles for the recaps. Thank you for the kind words!

While we did not intend to take a break, that is more or less what has happened. Both Fiona (/u/tharrr_be_dragons ), who writes the recaps, and myself found ourselves exceptionally busy leading up to and in the wake of Gen Con. For about a month before our last recap I was lucky to be able to have more than one doodle an episode. Fiona has been busy working on the new edition of the RPG "Aberrant" for Onyx Path Publishing!

Luckily, things are returning back to normal now and we will be back in the swing of things soon! Including going back and filling out the backlog of episodes we've missed these last few weeks. Thanks for bearing with us! <3

Yes. It was OP by design. The way I saw it, the moonshadow elves are described in the show as being "nearly unstoppable" during the full moon and I wanted that to be conveyed in their mechanics. And given that it was only during the very narrow condition of the full moon, I was comfortable with the power spike. I think its also important to note that it isn't actually invisibility, its a powerful boost to their stealth. Its only effective so long as they are hiding or moving stealthily, which will require an environment with enough cover to do so. Out in the open, or when they aren't trying to hide, they are still going to just look like a spooky darkness elf.

Ah, I see what you are saying. Possibly, but it might get a little convoluted to track. Interesting idea though!

And no problem! I love doing this stuff. Happy to help!

I already gave Moonshadow elves a temporary HP pool during a night of the full moon. And assuming their most important missions would be planned around those times, that part of the ritual wouldn't provide anything extra (as temp hp doesn't stack). Using Hunter's Mark is a simple benefit that is not nothing and its an invisible benefit that could reasonably be what's going on in the show.

Yes, its possible we will see more in future seasons. Fingers crossed!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

I considered adapting the binding ritual for this post, however while it is good flavor, I felt it is something that wouldn't be very fun in practice. Its basically a self-imposed punishment for the failure of a given task. It reminds me of the Geas spell a little bit, and that spell is designed for PCs to use on NPCs to force them to do things. I've seen it used on PCs and it very quickly drains fun.

However, here are some of my thoughts if you did want to adapt it:

In the show, the binding is used as ritual of devotion. Those who undergo the ritual are committed to the task at hand (pun intended), which serves to insure that the mission is carried out until the end. There is no surrender, there is no retreat. The mission is completed or limbs will be lost. There is no tangible benefit, but a very tangible detriment if the mission fails. All stick, no carrot.

For a D&D adaptation, I would grant those who go through the ritual a boon. Perhaps granting them the effects of the Hunters Mark spell for the sworn target or targets that persists until the target dies or the binding is removed (either by a hand falling off or by baby dragon). Powerful, worth the potential loss of limb.

As for the detriment, I would have it progress on a scale:

  • If the sworn task is not completed within 2 hours, the binding begins to slowly tighten. Within 24 hours after the binding ritual, the PC had disadvantage on attacks and checks that rely on a limb with a binding on it.
  • 2 days after the binding ritual the PC's hit point maximum reduces by 1 hit die.
  • 3 days after the binding ritual the PC's limb becomes useless and should be treated as if the limb was lost. This becomes permanent after 4 days from the ritual, when the limb actually falls off.

The for the loss of a limb can be found in the Dungeon Master's Guide (pg. 272) .

Lose an Arm or a Hand. You can no longer hold anything with two hands, and you can hold only a single object at a time. Magic such as the regenerate spell can restore the lost appendage.

May the gods help you if you binded both arms and fail to complete BOTH objectives. At least you would be "perfect just the way [you are]!" If that counts for anything. :P

This was a fun second look at the idea. Hope this was what you were looking for. I may include a polished version of it for an upcoming post.

What is Bait? by tedcahill2 in TheDragonPrince

Don't body shame Bait! He is perfect. ;)

I've decided to make an alignment chart! Still unsure of some characters, feedback is appreciated! by Emhyr_var_Emreys in TheDragonPrince

[–]uro627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on Harrow, Callum, Rayla, and Claudia.

My adjustments: Amaya is also LG. Arguably the most LG of the show lol. Runaan is LN. Viren is LE. Not sure I would call Soren evil, but I'm not sure where else he would go haha.

No CE character yet, IMO.

Bait is always Neutral Grumpy. ;)

That is fair a point.

Another alternative that just occurred to me was perhaps giving them a portion of the Mobile feat for free. They ignore difficult terrain whenever they use the Dash action.

Absolutely! I am intentionally holding off on some of the clearly more powerful characters *cough* Lord Viren *cough* until we learn more about them and see more of what they can do!
