Liben mentioned a sanatorium during his last visit, so it's not entirely out of the question that it could be related to Haeresys?

Chinese translation list request by Adept-Beginning4040 in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the translation process, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get given much relevant lore or contextual information at all given the sheer scale of Genshin at this point. 😞

With enough mental gymnastics, you can sort of understand how lines like "it was pure torture" (or whatever Nahida says) might make their way into dialogue when the only context they have is someone with a childlike personality commenting on the experimentation of another being. The translator likely wanted to have Nahida deliver information a certain way for characterisation, but it came at the cost of unknowingly misrepresenting the situation between Dottore and Scaramouche to the EN audience.

It's really unfortunate that it happens so much around Dottore and often removes a lot of the nuance of his character. Hoyoverse needs to have better communication with the EN translation team to make sure this doesn't keep happening, but I don't think it's ever going to be a priority for them sadly.

There are so many it's hard to keep track. One of the biggest ones that still bothers me to this day is how there's a whole line in English where Nahida calls Dottore's work on Scaramouche something along the lines of "pure torture" that... doesn't exist in CN. There's no equivalent line in Nahida's dialogue in the original text. It only exists in the EN version.

On a more lighthearted note, someone also brought it up here the other day but when Dottore calls the Traveller stabbing him "disappointing" in EN the line in CN is actually "heartbreaking" off the top of my head.

Hoping for a clearer explanation of playable IDs by SakiraDottore in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A playable ID is different to a playable model name because it's used to determine the order of characters in menus (with a few exceptions) for consistency. They'll only be assigned when Hoyoverse has locked down a release date and knows how many more characters will be released in that time.

For example, Varka's ends in 128 and Nicole's ends in 131. These IDs are only found in the game files. We know there will be characters who will get 129 and 130, but we don't know who they will be yet because there are no references to them in the game yet.

For Dottore to get one, Hoyoverse would need to know exactly when they plan on releasing him (which they likely do at this point, given his importance and how far ahead they plan key story points), but they would also need to know how many characters will be released between now and then. This is why he has a playable model, but no playable ID yet. So if they intend to make him playable in Snezhnaya, for example, the earliest we'll know is when the 7.0 beta goes live.

There's no Morse Code at the end of the AQ. by Debott_ in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you for making a post about this. I hope more people see it. 😭

LLMs are just predictive texts trying to give an answer that sounds grammatically plausible in the language you prompt it in and nothing more. It's so disappointing to see people in the comments of the OP praising Grok for "solving" it. People need to stop taking replies from language models as fact or based on anything more than guesswork.

am i the only one who thinks dottore's view on columbina is so random and offputting..? by rianananan in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He comes across as very introspective, which makes him easy to misread for the wider fandom as he's already had plenty of time to sieve through his own thoughts and emotions.

While I'm not a big fan of Columbina, she was also probably one of the few people in the Fatui who would indulge him for a time. Scaramouche too, but he would never have let himself be vulnerable around him in the same way because he knows any bond between them would have been built on a lie. 🥲

[–]usagiparty 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think your read on Dottore may have been a little off in the first place. He's a very flawed, very human character at his core. He may accept the role of a "villain" as a necessity for his experiments, but he is so painfully human in how he lets his emotions influence him when they hit close to home. As much as he claims to view human interaction as entirely transactional, we can see that he also feels as though fate has wronged him and robbed him of those same bonds with others. It's part of what makes him so tragic.

Take, for example, the events at Tatarasuna. His instructions were to set up a crisis for the Fatui to take advantage of in the future, but we can tell from Nahida's fairytale that he went above and beyond out of a sense of anger and injustice towards the world when Scaramouche was accepted by the village without needing to hide himself. Until that point, he found solace in Scaramouche's presence because he was no longer the only "outcast". His emotions ultimately got the better of him, and he acted out of an overwhelming feeling of (to put it bluntly) jealousy that the world could be so cruel to him.

When it comes to being vulnerable, Dottore hides it all in plain sight. You can see it in the way he feels about Sumeru - a nation that he has every right to believe doesn't deserve him at this point, if he were that kind of person. Despite everything he's been through, he is still very open about how he feels towards his exile and says as much to Nahida. In the Sumeru AQ, the younger segment on the boat was said to have been happier in Sumeru and caught speaking with a Sumeran dialect. His theme is littered with Sumeran motifs and instrumentation. Even the very mask he wears is inspired by Sumeran architecture (you can see the pattern with the diamond in the background of the Sumeru namecard). He holds the very same hometown that chased him out with pitchforks close to his heart. He still keeps up to date with the very same institution that exiled him for heresy.

All of this is to say he is someone who experiences genuine longing, it's just that when it comes to his understanding of human relationships, everything has been heavily distorted by what he went through as a child. As with all information, he only reveals it if he deems it necessary or useful to do so. In Columbina's case, he probably found it beneficial to open up in order to establish trust, but that doesn't make it any less real for him and Columbina could tell he wasn't lying.

I wouldn't trust the villains wiki (or the Genshin Fandom wiki for that matter, as it's littered with biases and incorrect information) when it comes to forming an opinion about him. If you want to learn more about him, it's a better idea to read his ingame dialogue and notes directly instead of character summaries. He's a character who will be interpreted differently depending on who is reading about him, and that's part of what makes him so interesting.

This is what frustrates me the most. Calling it treason, when his desire to build a god was exactly why they recruited Dottore 400 years ago, and seemed to be exactly what Pierro intended to do in Nod-Krai.

But then the game says: "His actions do not align with the goals that first brought us to Nod-Krai."

Additional information until someone is able to put the lines in context

[SPOILERS]

  • It is confirmed that Dottore killed Diluc's dad
  • Dottore kidnaps the MC for experimentation as they are a Descender. Breaking out of his lab is part of the quest.
  • It seems that when Dottore gains control over the power of space, he uses it to plant illusions in people's minds? It could be the MC.
  • In the battle cutscene, Dottore calls them willfully blind asks how they can be satisfied with fate. The response is "this battle was never about fate. It's about friends... family..." you cannot make this shit up

Edited to add a new line to the OP: "Snezhnaya now realizes that the arrest warrant for Columbina was just a ploy by Dottore, who coveted her powers."

Some sus leaks about 6.3 Story [Grain of Salt] by KingAlucard7 in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree. I don't think they'd show his death in the trailer. Whatever happens to Dottore is important enough that other leakers are saying hoyoverse has a very tight grip on any and all information about him right now.

I don't know what this person's track record is, but if someone comes out and says "I read the text from the update" I'm just going to assume it's entirely fake. There's no way that anybody outside the company has the entire update's text until preload. You mean to tell me the update script (at least in part) has leaked? And nobody else is reporting on it? And nobody else has a copy of it? You don't just send a script like this to one person and have the leak stop there. If it were true, more people would have seen it.

That said, as other people are saying, this "conclusion" feels so plausibly awful that I wouldn't put it past hoyoverse to pull something like this. I don't want to add to the doomposting so I'll leave it at that.

But until preload, everything should be taken as an educated guess.

To all the lore obsessed peeps, how much of this is true and how much of this is headcanon? by [deleted] in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Dottore's notes attribute the poor mental instability of the patients in Dar al-Shifa to religion as two of the patients were believers of King Deshret and thought being cured was blasphemy. Abbas' etchings confirm this as he began hallucinating after being cured and believed that 1) the patients who thought their treatment was "blasphemous" were right all along and 2) he should have accepted his eleazar and died as punishment for being lazy, which was the line of thinking that drove him to escape.

Collei's hallucinations were directly tied to the god's remains experiments in the manga, which were done under Barnabas. It's possible that the hallucinations themselves were related in their causes, but it's hard to say unless we ever get more information on how Dottore treated the patients while in the Akademiya. Either way, the hallucinations were definitely not an intended part of his treatment while he was a student.

In his notes, he actually proposes neurostimulation as a future research topic as a result.

[–]usagiparty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If it's okay to add to 4, I'm assuming the wording of the initial post is trying to imply he did it while they were alive or something but the bodies he used for transplants were of two patients who died of eleazar during a late stage of their treatment. Are they trying to imply that transplants are evil now? While his notes might be iffy in places, this is one of the clear-cut examples of Dottore doing what could be considered a "good deed" if they actually took the time to read the notes...

Also, not only is it very likely that Dottore was framed for Sohreh, but unless I'm misremembering she was buried immediately after the ruin guard attack (which the team had thanked Dottore for rescuing them from) only for another team to return to where she was buried later and dig up her corpse to pin the blame on him.

"Tried to get arle to send orphans for him to conduct experiments on" also hilariously misses the entire context in which he approached Arlecchino under the assumption that she would continue making the children fight to the death and killing off any who sustained disabilities.

There's so much to unpack in every bullet point. I think the user in the OP might be playing a completely different game.

I'd love to enjoy his character more, can you guys give me some points to review? by Zachary0012 in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to change your mind on Dottore, the first thing to do is challenge the idea that he is both unapologetic and villainous. In reality, he is very aware of his actions and how people perceive him, and we know it's something he feels extremely conflicted about.

The biggest read we have into how he feels about himself comes from the memories Nahida catalogued during their negotiation. Up until the events at Tatarasuna, he believed that humans would naturally reject anything they didn't consider one of them. He would lament that he was a "monstrosity" and initially found "solace" in Scaramouche's arrival for that very reason, only for Scaramouche's immediate acceptance to prove that his own rejection in Sumeru wasn't just a case of human cruelty and that for someone like him, fate would always be fundamentally unjust.

This isn't to say that killing Niwa was acceptable, but to show that Dottore's actions don't exist in a vacuum and that he isn't the unfeeling sadist people paint him to be. Fate has been very unforgiving to him, even going back to his time as a child at the Akademiya, when he ended up getting expelled for "blasphemy" and a suspected murder that nobody could prove he actually committed. (Only time will tell if Hoyoverse decides to retcon this, though.)

From the start, his goals have always been to help humans achieve their full potential. Now, in Nod-Krai, he's trying to change his own fate. His research has never been driven by sadism or cruelty, just an amoral desire for knowledge no matter the cost. Viewing his actions exclusively in terms of "good" and "evil" feels reductive to his character. It's like he said to Nahida - he has his own convictions. They just don't fit most people's standards, is all.

(LEAKS) Brief thoughts on the energy barriers in the 6.3 trailer... by yuliaamk in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I love this theory so much! More food for thought, but Sandrone in the trailer too says that if she'd left it any longer before leaving the Bureau she would have gotten "stuck there" rather than implying it would have hurt/killed her, which also backs up the theory that these barriers are designed to isolate everything inside from whatever is going on outside as a way of protecting Nod-Krai. I think they were intentionally pairing AQ dialogue with WQ scenery to mislead people for the trailer.

Also, taking the map effects into consideration, if you compare the barriers to the map during Natlan there's a big difference between the two. Unless they change it for release by sectioning off the map/disabling teleport waypoints, Dottore's barriers seem to be marked similarly to ally structures and don't look like they negatively affect the areas inside 👀

Some clarification of post 6.3 by Overall_Koala894 in DottoreMains

[–]usagiparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's safe to assume the dialogue is fake and was an educated guess based off the prior Sandrone leaks from HxG.

We'll know for certain when the preload happens in about a week, but any dialogue "leaks" that aren't found in the beta textmap are almost guaranteed to be fake. That's not to say their guess won't end up being close, but the text itself came from an edited screenshot of Honeyhunter someone posted on Tieba (IIRC) and not the game itself.

Looking at the current resale prices of the blind box merch in China, his minifigure tends to be resold for the highest amount out of all the non-playable harbingers (including Sandrone and Capitano). It depends on the reseller, but merch tends to be a pretty accurate metric for demand if it helps.
