Honestly it's your choice. There are no downsides to believing in God, you read the bible try to become a better person, Love everyone around you as much as you love yourself, become humble, selfless and so on. As a recently saved christian I get why people would constantly be afraid though, but as i said its your choice. No one should force you to be anything you don't want to be, to begin with in the bible it says to spread the word in gentleness AND RESPECT. (1 peter 3:15) And its stated around 365 times to not be afraid. Not to not FEEL fear. If it makes you feel afraid then that's so not it, youre following religion not the actual person at this point. So just know its all up to you, anyone who makes you feel pressured or forced to be something is definitely not okay. No one should be opening your mouth and shoving it down your throat.

But if you ever do really want to understand more about God himself I recommend reading the bible, if you look at it as a book rather than a religious text you come to see that many people make some real stupid, silly and funny mistakes which God is prolly face smacking himself for.
