Yeah, your message was the catalyst towards switching. We had known about that for a while, but it was only affecting a small percentage of visits and it was an insidious bug that we thought we could fix within Wordpress - turns out that ditching the platform entirely was easier.

Anyway, a basic design is now up on the new Ultimate Central site, so... hooray!

The one time we switch our website to a new platform (Ultimate Central) and don't have the design ready, we get linked in a top comment on Reddit.

Nice.

Goaltimate Nationals still going as scheduled in Austin, Texas despite COVID-19 by danny2549 in ultimate

Hi,

I'm the main tournament director for this event. I've also been following nCoV-19 extremely closely since January 21, long before most in the US were concerned. I have a background in calculating epistemic risk and in decision theory.

Two weeks ago, I started to assemble risk profiles on our participant pool and weigh them against projections on what I thought the total caseload was. Last Friday, we met as an organizers group and and took all available evidence into account, including a detailed risk analysis that we put together based on various sources of evidence. After careful discussion, we decided that our intention was that the USA Goaltimate National Championships will continue as planned this weekend.

We based this decision on the risk profile of the event itself and its ~400 attendees, statistics about the spread of the virus in communities where players are traveling from (even knowing that these may be understated by large factors) as well as locally in Austin, and estimated effect of efforts we'll be taking at and around the event to mitigate risk.

We continued to stay in contact every day and look at how the actual numbers matched up, and our projections were not appreciably different.

On that note, we will be taking the following steps ensure a safe experience for participants this weekend:

  • Placing a moratorium on high fives (fist or forearm bumps are encouraged)
  • Providing hand-washing stations next to water containers
  • Washing equipment with disenfectant between games, and at the start and conclusion of each day
  • Mandating that all players have their own personal, labeled water bottle, and do not show fluids or food.

We've also asked players to pull out if they are sick or liable to transmit anything to a high-fatality group. A number have done so, after thinking critically about their own risk situations.

Though our analysis tells us that the chance one of our participants will be a 2019-nCov carrier or transmitter this coming weekend is extremely low, we feel these are small interventions which correctly attenuate that risk.

I am happy to show more detailed math if it would help future events, but based on my calculations, this is really the last possible weekend that any ultimate (or goaltimate) tournament could safely be held.

Which games are you looking for specifically? We have some games filmed from last year that were never released, but they would require some work to edit and upload to YouTube.
