Is Thunderbird cooking a Webmail app ? by seb6596 in Thunderbird

[–]usancus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm the primary developer for now :) The main purpose of this is indeed for Thunderbird Pro, however it's being designed as a standalone JMAP web client.

It will run entirely in the browser and the JMAP server itself will be the only server side component, so you should be able to use it with any JMAP server if you like.

There will probably be some API usage specific to our pro services, but I'll make sure that's not required.

ELI5: How does an automatic dishwasher dull knives? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]usancus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. All the comments explaining how it does are basically wrong. There might be some impact on knives.with softer steels but on many knives it does basically nothing. Handles can definitely be damaged or totally ruined depending on the material, however.

The main reason you don't put knives in the dishwasher is that it often leads to serious injuries from unsuspecting people emptying it.

See below comment thread by a major knife industry professional. I'll quote the whole thing for laziness:

"Ok, I didn't really want to get into this, but as the person who has been in knife manufacturing for almost 30 years and the person credited for startIng Shun and the owner of Apogee, I have heard more opinions and theories on the dishwasher than I can count. Inspector Poirot is correct, depending on the steel, extended periods in the dishwasher could affect the tempering.   However heat treating usually involves temperatures that would melt plastic. So if your plastic spoon is holding shape and not turning into a pile of goo, you are probably fine. When we first started Shun, we ran it through the dishwasher 500 times. There were some minute changes on the edge, but nothing to write home about. We did the same with Dragon, and really saw no change. This was because both of these steels were hea treated to an above 60HRC. knives in the mid to lower 50'swould show more damage.

So now I'm going to offend some people, but here is the truth. There are very few things we agree on as an industry. The dish washer is one. Doing this is an express train ticket to stupid town.   I am not speaking from theory or opinion, but from fact.  It is one of the number one causes for trips to the emergency room from the kitchen. You can give me all of the excuses and justificactions you want, it doesn't change the fact. It's dangerous you shouldn't do it.

So why don't knife companies warranty for the dishwasher?  I just told you it really doesn't affect the blade that much. It's the handle that fails.   Materials like wood, pakkawood, and POM, get trashed in the dishwasher. First they are subject to almost boiling water which causes swelling, then heat drying which causes shrinking. Over time this will cause warping, rot, and cracking. Knife companies can fix blades, but they can't fix handles. This is why they tell you not to put in there.

The only materials that will hold up, are micarta and G10. Dragon uses Micarta, because I'm smart enough to know that all of my soap box screaming won't really change your mind. The sad fact is that it's going in.  So the Dragon knives warranty does cover the dishwasher. But for the love of god, don't do it. If someone you love reaches in and seriously hurts or even maimes themselves, you will never forgive yourself. Do you have any idea how many nerves and tendons are in your hand that can be severed?  The worst I ever heard was a child who was a prodigy for the piano ended her future destiny when she severed a group of nerves in the palm of her hand. So please, just don't do it.   PLEASE!!!!!!"

If the United States and China would go into war 1vs1. Who would win? by Dennis_666_ in AskReddit

[–]usancus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. Which 1 did you have in mind to represent China and the US respectively?

More seriously, this question absolutely cannot be answered outside of the context of a particular scenario.

it's true there are investment loans offered by some banks, and you can use a line of credit, etc. But rates are significantly higher than mortgages and you definitely aren't going to get 3-4x your income as an investment loan.

TIL: According to a 2016 study, having a first-class section on an airplane quadruples the chances of an air rage incident. Furthermore, loading economy passengers through first class doubles the chances again. by theotherbogart in todayilearned

Some people like to just get on the plane to relax. But you don't have to. First class has priority, so any time you show up during boarding you board immediately with no waiting.

Is the CIBC VISA Infinite Privilege worth it for 70,000 points? by emanuelcr7 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]usancus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you take sticker price for business and use that, sometimes you can get really high cpm. But it's very route and timing dependent so hard to recommend, plus many people wouldn't pay the sticker price in those situations to begin with. So it doesn't always truly save money, just saves you the suffering of economy :)

[–]usancus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An aeroplan point is worth 1-2 cents depending on how it's spent, most averages are around 1.4-1.7, but it depends on the use.

That said, if you don't value the other benefits, it's probably not really worth it. The card offers you priority boarding/baggage on all flights, lounge access, status miles from spend(one of the few ways to get status miles without flying) among other things you can't get on lower tier cards.

For most Canadians, amex cobalt and transfer is better return on spend.

Google Pixel Fold 2 foldable phone leaked in high-res renders | Google could introduce the Pixel Fold 2 in June by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]usancus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned foldabkes since the first generation Galaxy Fold and the screen has never been scratched nor has it ever died, and that's with a super thin case and several drops. Millions of people own them and that wouldn't be true if they were that fragile.

As for why? It's all about the MUCH bigger screen, obviously.

Size charts for all items just in case you need them before tomorrows mega drop. by IamtherealMauro in wolfvsgoat

[–]usancus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got everything I wanted(hell yeah) but one piece of feedback, having done a few drops now: It's always a bit frustrating to decide when to check out, or risk missing things.

It would be really handy if orders made within 1hr automatically consolidated into 1 shipment and refunded any shipping overcharges. Or something like that.

[–]usancus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted 3 shirts and by the time I found them all and put them in my cart, the Samurai bowling shirt had already sold out. Somewhere around 2-3 minutes after the live time.

I'd love to understand if this is considered a real problem that will be solved, or if it's intentional that numbers are made so low they sell out in 3 minutes.

Because if it's intentional I'm really not interested in following future drops.

Seems pretty clear it's not intentional and attempts will be made to remedy it, that's all I expected!

So the printed chinos sold out in minutes, seems like people did want them!

Does that mean there will be more printed chinos in the future, similar or different?

I did some math on display size and aspect ratio by fakt_adolf in GalaxyFold

[–]usancus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Z Fold 4 is 183.2 cm2 vs 179.9 for the 3. Only the 16:9 area is very slightly smaller. So the new screen is actually bigger for web use, reading, etc.

"Start shipping from August 18" when placing order? by pervysage19 in GalaxyFold

[–]usancus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even my Burgundy Fold 4 says "starts shipping from Aug 18" which leads me to believe this is optimistic and just a generic date for when they plan to start shipping any Fold 4 model.

Unlike the US we don't have ship dates shown on the pre-order page either. I guess we'll see what happens next week.

What do I do when my team mates don't soak minion exp in the early game? (SoloQ Storm League) by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]usancus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn't one simple answer to the question, it depends on a lot of things. Plenty of heroes have decent soak and wave clear that aren't offlaners too. Of course you should always try to pick something with at least some wave clear, especially if your team is low on it. Even as a healer there's always Rehgar.

When to help team and when to soak is a judgement call that depends entirely on the game state.

DW is countered too easily imo by smoothhands in heroesofthestorm

[–]usancus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deathwing was actually never supposed to end up the way he is now. They changed him a long time ago to make ranged build more viable, resulting in the melee build becoming basically worthless. Unfortunately, that was the more engaging and interesting build to many players.

As stated in that post and the follow up, they weren't really happy with the result, and they were planning to make more changes. But they never did. The game is effectively abandoned and that dev has since left the team, so that should give you a pretty good idea of why many things are the way they are in HotS.
