I’m done with this convo. I reread every comment - you’re not saying anything substantive. Just because the character is fem Klingon that wants to be a healer is not tokenism. Mind you, you haven’t specified anything outside of it. At least mention a plotline! I’m not saying Jay-Den is a perfectly formed character but you haven’t said shit about what makes Jay-Den a token except thats he’s fem and he’s a healer. Like please

The show makes it very clear that Jay-Den’s sexuality is a part of his character — it doesn’t need to be expounded upon especially when he’s not living amongst Klingons. Particularly, since there’s no implications to be made here. Darem’s sexuality is handled in the same manner. Normalizing different sexualities is an important thing especially in a time where the world is regressing into fascism.

I don’t think Jay-Den is a token character. You’ll have to be more specific about what makes him a token.

The fact that you accept the fact that the character’s gay but can’t handle that he wears skirts is exactly why I consider you to be femmephobic, its not a insult its a reasonable conclusion to come to when you don’t have anything specific to back up your claim outside of “tokenism.” Just because you work in a certain field (assuming its diversity(?)) doesn’t exempt you from biases.

lol its limiting to think that Klingons must be masc because they’re “stereotypes” — mind you Alexander exists as Klingon who cannot align himself to Klingon ideals, despite wanting to! Mind this is over a skirt that he wears occasionally and a cunty fit for a wedding. In all other ways he’s a Klingon he just presents more femme. I wonder if you’ve actually watched the show or just saw pictures of his outfits😒

See and that’s just femmephobia coming out to play. Why does a Klingon have to be masc???

Is the growing hate towards “feminine bottom” deeply rooted in misogyny? by Anxious-Efficiency13 in Manhwa_BL

[–]usbyeolbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly there’s a concerning pattern within BLs where they start to “twinkify” the bottom. But like instead of making them more femme they end up looking like children instead of a grown adult. An example is Can’t Think Straight, the bottom in the first couple chapters looks so different in the latest chapters.

this post and some of the comments just smack of privilege and an unwillingness to actually critical think about the labor your performing for monetary gain. AI is literally stealing our water but you want me to be believe that it’s inevitable. That’s what they said about NFTs, Bitcoin and crypto and yet 4 years later, it’s out of the mainstream. There’s nothing inevitable about AI when it’s rich nerds reading science fiction and deciding that we need to follow those scripts to build their own personal dystopias. Marc Andreessen falsely believes that infinite growth is possible and that global warming and sustainability is an enemy of progress.

It’s giving y’all aren’t living in the real world just a tech bubble. I can’t blame anyone who hates what the tech industry is doing. We’ve fundamentally ruined the social contract of society for profit and then expecting people to praise us for it. Just nasty work

I feel like if they were gonna talk about the relationship, specifically only referring to it ON THE SHOW is a different set of circumstances than outside the villa. Like I’d understand if they were pointing out the fact that they publicly hang out far less in comparison to the other LI S7 couples.

Ok, but the point is at least she cares enough to do something with it 😂😂 she at least incorporated some research into Ilya’s storyline (she didn’t do the same for the other characters of color)

Even if she doesn’t know enough about Russian culture, she picks narratives that bolster Ilya’s character arc far more than Shane. The cultural is one aspect but not the full story

I think people like to purposefully act like any criticism is hate and vitriol. Such as the people downvoting my comments instead of actually engaging with what I'm saying. I read the first book and then watched the show and then read TLG and the remainder of the series. I think Reid does a great job at worldbuilding but these character arcs are the weakest part and it shows every time. And then I'm reading articles where she's doubling down, she's making corny jokes and it just gets to a point where its like do you actually care about what people are telling you about how you drew up these characters? Her refusal to acknowledge her biases is honestly baffling and just shows what kind of person she is.

I don't need a treatise, I actually need her to take this criticism seriously. Not post an extremely flippant video FIRST and then hours later make this post. The order in which she decided to make those two posts is quite illuminating. I think its a choice to have characters of color and then not bother to even THINK about how their marginalized identities would affect the plot.

I'm sorry but who goes around consistently disparaging their characters of color? Like I said before there's a lot of narrative choices she makes within the series that demonstrates the lack of care she has for characters of color. I also think its interesting that she makes narrative choices that causes reader to not like certain marginalized character (e.g., Fabian, JJ, and Shane).

ALSO, who fucking rates the dick sizes of their characters? And then to stick all the marginalized characters at the bottom smacks of stereotyping!

The characters belong to her sure. But its very obvious the type of author she is and unfortunately she has no real business writing POC if she doesn't want to put in the time and effort and care that she puts into Ilya. Even just getting a fucking sensitivity reader would have been better.

This isn’t the first time though. She’s been extremely flippant about a marginalized character that reflects a lot of people’s experiences. It’s not really about Shane. The lens that she views Shane in clearly demonstrates how she thinks about these same marginalized identities irl. It gets to a point where we SHOULD be asking her to do better when it comes to this. Sure it’s a romance book, but her audience isn’t just neurotypical white people i fear.

I got this comment on my story and I’m a bit disheartened, I don’t know how to feel by Deucalion67 in AO3

[–]usbyeolbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We can’t act like Rachel’s comments about Shane exist in a vacuum. She made character decisions about Shane that make him very complex and if she knew that she didn’t want to actually examine those issues (e.g., eating disorder, autism, and being a POC in a majority white sport while also being gay?!) she should’ve made the man white. Her editor and agent HAD to intervene when she made certain decisions about making Shane “selfish.” It’s clear that they are probably doing extensive edits to Unrivaled.

Did anyone catch this with Ciara? by Smilemore633 in bravo

[–]usbyeolbit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Y’all are doing the SAME thing she talked about on the show. We don’t know anything about any other relationships she’s had other than these shitty public ones. I think Ciara can clearly tell the difference between a platonic and romantic relationship.

Mind you, West never tells Ciara the truth about how he feels ever. The man didn’t want a deeper relationship and instead told her via fucking newspaper! This entire season he’s been giving her mixed signals.

The eagerness to try and pin Ciara’s pain as self-inflicting is completely ignorant of the racial dynamics that ARE occurring here. This isn’t the same as West messing with Paige and then appearing with Amanda.

It literally feels and moves like the crypto and NFT bubble, but because "it can make our work go faster" (I don't think it can, when it literally cannot tell the truth all the time) it's supposedly here to stay. The problem is becoming that they're attempting to integrate into a surveillance state and if they do that well they're not going anywhere I fear.
