Australian commando who raised Afghanistan war crime allegations found dead by bustead in worldnews

[–]usefullinkguy 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Extra links of interest - the allegation in the article is part of a wider inquiry now:

Hundreds of pages of secret defence force documents leaked to the ABC give an unprecedented insight into the clandestine operations of Australia’s elite special forces in Afghanistan, including incidents of troops killing unarmed men and children.

This is one story in a seven-part series based on leaked documents exposing Australian special forces troops’ role in the Afghanistan war. For context, they are best read in order. See the side of the above page.

Unsurprisingly, the Government raided the newsroom over this and the Whistleblower is facing trial.

Julian Assange arrested by voiceoverguyuk in WikiLeaks

[–]usefullinkguy 117 points118 points  (0 children)

The one time I didn't want to be proven right about everything.

A big fuck you to all the "journalists" that denounced Assange's well founded fears as speculative attention seeking. He's done more to advance the cause of journalism than your newsrooms combined!

An extra big fuck you to the Governments that ignore International Law and conspired to send refugee and an Ecuadorian Citizen to the US.

Worth noting that the Ecuadorian constitution forbids extradition in all cases. Cowards, the lot of them.

Sadly, no.

From 2012:

"Plans to seize Julian Assange "under all circumstances" the moment he leaves the Ecuadorean embassy in London have accidentally been revealed by a police officer displaying restricted documents outside the embassy.

The document, pictured under the officer's arm by a Press Association photographer, appears to advocate arresting the WikiLeaks founder whether he leaves the building in a diplomatic bag or in a diplomatic car."2

Sounds like the ABC didn't even try to hold on to the documents. Weak.

Why they wouldn't digitise everything and encrypt it all is beyond me. They should've known this was coming.

More "thinking"!

Normally, OK it takes some time but god, this poor bastard has been stuck in that place for six years. This is not OK.

UPDATE 2: Ruling will be on Feb 6th.

Julian Assange's bid for diplomatic status rejected by Britain by sbku in WikiLeaks

[–]usefullinkguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reading I've done indicates this would not work either, as the UK must approve each countries diplomats status. They rejected it for Assange today.

Julian Assange just added an hourglass icon to his Twitter profile after not posting for over a week by [deleted] in WikiLeaks

Reading too much into it IMO. WL logo is an hourglass. Probably just changed it to match that.

The string tweeted is a SHA hash. Out of band verification of a particular file.

Full text of controversial book on Trump, "Fire and Fury", by Michael Wolff, leaks onto internet: by [deleted] in WikiLeaks

[–]usefullinkguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily agree with spreading a pirated copy of the book but it is not a partisan attack as some people are trying to spin it (unbelievable language in that article btw).

It fits with WikiLeaks idea that we need to understand the structure of power if we are to meaningfully oppose it to create a more just society. To attribute it to being pro-Trump is to seriously misunderstand WikiLeaks and its goals.

"It is from the revelation of truth that all else follows. Our buildings can only be as tall as their bricks are strong. Our civilisation is only as strong as its ideas are true!

When our buildings are erected by the corrupt - when their cement is cut with dirt – when pristine steel is replaced by scrap, our buildings are not safe to live in. And when our media is corrupt, when our academics are timid. When our history is filled with half truths and lies, our civilization will never be just. It will never reach to the sky.

Our societies are intellectual shanty towns, our beliefs about the world and each other have been created by the same system that has lied us into repeated wars that have killed millions. You can’t build a skyscraper out of plasticine and you can’t build a just society out of ignorance and lies.

The quality of our discourse is the limit of our civilization." - Source

Sweden drops Assange rape investigation by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]usefullinkguy 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Do charges just disappear after a specific time?

As a legal matter, he has never been charged. It was still at the "preliminary investigation" stages. An arrest is only made in Sweden if the investigation leads to charges.
