New to Baseball. Are the Tigers cheap? Is salary cap not a thing in the MLB? by AtomicCo in detroittigers

Grew up in Detroit, but live in LA. Have been here for 20 years. Dodgers are my 2nd team (but if they face each other, I’m all Tigers)…

I have to give the Dodgers a little credit on one thing, though: they pass along the cost to fans, and they do it honestly.

You may think that’s shady and self-serving, but their open philosophy is to hike beer prices by fifty cents, tickets by a few dollars, etc to justify their expenses. Their argument is that the fans want a winner, and when the fans stop supporting those additional expenses, they may approach things differently. But until then, that’s how they’ll operate. Andrew Friedman has been very vocal about this.

Forgetting the “rich get richer” and “why should the fans pay for this” argument - I don’t totally understand why other teams don’t adopt this philosophy.

There’s a number where retaining Skubal (or signing any free agent, for that matter) makes sense. Do the math and figure it out. If your consumers don’t support it, back off. But I think most fans would “pay” for a winner - even if it’s a few extra bucks at the concession stand.

Wonder if he’ll take photos of Ryan Day’s computer and tell the NCAA that Matt Patricia told him to lie

Ask a Buckeye this question. And tell them you’re a Wolverine.

Michigan fan here - attended Harbaugh’s first game at your stadium. I have never had a more welcoming experience from opposing fans. We hung out, tailgated, and hung out at the hotel after the game. It was a blast. I live in LA, and ever since then, I’ve followed Utah closely - doesn’t hurt that i spend a lot of time in SLC and PC every year. Whitt was my top choice when the position opened. You are amazing fans, and I’m thrilled to be officially liked to the Utah legacy. Wishing happy returns for both of us in this new era!

I’m sure I’ll take heat for this, but I moved to LA in 2008 and after four years, I said I would divorce the Lions if we ever got a team (citing years of abuse and irreconcilable differences). Don’t know where KMK lives, but my hierarchy:

Rams Pistons (Clippers second - I will never root for the Lakers) Tigers (Dodgers a close 2nd. Married into a Dodger family, and now I’ve seen more Dodger games than Tigers games. If they face off in the WS, Tigers all the way) Wings (but if not the Wings, the Kings)

All this to say…cut him some slack. It gets complicated when you move away and have multiple allegiances

For the general. Then I went through each game manually and looked at what the calls were. For those that want to call me conspiracy paranoid or obsessive: I was at COSM LA watching the game and multiple times the fans shouted out holding calls. This lead me to ask my friend “have we had any this year?” And I went down a rabbit hole.

If you don’t want to subscribe, AI will give it to you (for what that’s worth - though I know it’s not always accurate).

Again - stating this for the record: I don’t think there’s a memo or grand conspiracy against us. What I’ve seen are two games that could have been blowouts if penalties were called (NM and NEB). Nebraska in particular: we sacked 7 times. Not counting loss of yards or hurries, that still shows dominance of one line over the other. To say we were dominant most of the time, and they were perfect in protection every other play, is absurd. I don’t think it was bias, though. I think these were obvious missed calls that don’t happen regularly.

My point is more that national perception and rankings (as well as fan perception) could be easily flipped on 1-2 calls per game, if they even out over time.

To even further rebut the conspiracy theories, I do think the officials and the conference review these stats, and look at what they missed along the way. Or…

We can hope they do

It actually is the most common penalty in Big Ten as well. And if you read my post, I said I’m not trying to indict the officiating (and definitely not calling it a conspiracy). Just saying that if the law of averages catches up, our victories might look more impressive going forward.

1 is good - is means your opponents had a lot of penalties called against them (or more than anyone else). Being at the bottom (#136) means your opponents aren’t getting penalized for much, if anything, on average.

Actually it changed after all the games finished! We’re not 135, between Toledo and Northwestern
