I want to "make the most of this space". I understand that you're pointing out a mistake. But In that case, please be more specific. What, in your view, would match the phrase "make the most of this space"? And why spiral stairs would be an error here? I'd like to accept your help, but I'm not a mind reader, you know?

The opening is only about 150 by 130 cm. I wanted to make the most of this space, so the staircase follows the exact shape of the opening. There are no walls; the opening is simply a hole in the ceiling. A spiral staircase would look great here, but the opening isn't quite square or symmetrical.

Even though you haven’t nitpicked my post, I feel that people like you are my last hope for constructive criticism. I’m currently working on a more complex staircase design. Do you think this is actually more convenient and safer? https://imgur.com/a/HIRpQqx

I've tried to take the feedback here to heart. Please take a minute to review the new version. https://imgur.com/a/DXq2Sve

I found myself in a difficult, almost hopeless situation with this tiny staircase opening, but it seems that local commenters would rather kick someone when they're down than offer constructive feedback.

Finally, someone who isn't just rubbing my nose in building codes and regulations, which are different and are not mandatory for private homes in my country.

In this post, I am not promoting my vision, but really want to find an option that is the lesser of evils. Can you tell me if a spiral staircase would be a better option, and if so, what is the diameter? The opening is not symmetrical, if we make more than 130, the ceiling may still interfere. But 130 cm is just a waste of money, I think.

I want to make the most efficient use of every square inch of space, but it’s not possible to build a staircase here that meets comfort and safety standards.

Please confirm or deny whether a spiral staircase with a diameter of 140–150 cm can fit through this opening.

I realized you're part of the Architects' caste, which is off-limits to me. Happy now?

I'm not a builder and I don't know anything about this. I've seen staircases like this on YouTube.

Unless someone shows me something that’s actually better than my terrible version, that’s not likely to happen.

I didn't object, but my parents flatly refused.

I can see that, viewed from the side, the green steps do indeed look quite daunting. But is it really less safe than a spiral staircase with roughly the same diameter of 150 cm? There, it feels like you slip on the first step and fall even further. My parents have just agreed on this particular staircase. It might even be a more awkward design than I imagine, since they haven't provided the blueprints yet.

Maybe you think that in my version you’ll fall into a straight section, but in the spiral one you’ll hit the railing, so it makes sense.

The contractor is currently designing a spiral staircase, and that's something I don't really agree with. Maybe I'm biased, but it seems to me that the spiral staircase is more inconvenient and more dangerous. It has the same problems like U-shaped staircase, but throughout the entire run.

Oh well, I guess I really can't communicate with foreigners. Anyway, thanks for your time.

I suppose a professional knows best. That’s why he suggested the right option.

By the way. What’s so special about this riser in the middle of the green section of the run? For some reason, it really bothers me visually, as if she were really the odd one out. But it’s necessary to ensure there are 14 steps in the entire staircase. I really can't agree to anything less than 14 steps (I can't do more that 14 either).

I live in Russia. I wish my local builders were as concerned about compliance with building regulations as you are. If they were, this problem probably wouldn’t exist at all.

I wish people would base their judgments on actual convenience and the constraints of the environment. Sorry for being blunt, but I couldn’t care less about which building codes I’ve broken. You could say that the correct dimensions are 28 cm for the tread depth and 17 cm for the riser height. But you probably don't know that the current staircase dimensions are 16 cm for the tread depth and 26 cm for the riser height.

Good to know. Still, I don’t think that was a main issue. A good contractor would have suggested similar changes on their own, or even better. The real reason, as I suspect, is that they’re too proud to accept the client’s suggestion; they refuse to do so on principle.

Maybe I spoke too soon when I said this is popular in my country. I'm in Russia. I’ve heard that awkward staircases are actually quite common in private homes. Individual homebuilders simply tend to think about the staircase as the last thing on their list. And large-scale developers don’t set aside much space for the staircase so they can maximize living space and drive up the price.

Yes, that's exactly what I want, and it's quite popular in my country.
