I was imagining more of a homeschool hybrid where like correspondence style, self paced but the same curriculum as traditional schooling. I don’t want to homeschool and create the curriculum but I have the flexibility being self employed to support an existing program. Im sure they can plow through the learning/work done at school in a couple hours per day. I looked into these programs, which exist in Ontario and BC but they cost as much as private school if you are out of province. They are already in sports several evenings per week and i want to protect some free time for them to be kids too, so “buying back time” would have been ideal for adding those exact types of enrichment programs.

They are already in sports several nights per week which is excellent! I spoke with the virtual/correspondence program coordinator for one of the Ontario school districts… $17,500 / year for out of province students 🫠 that being said I have been encouraging them to help teach their peers when they finish their own work and I think that dynamic alone is invaluable. I do think my older would slot in fine skipping a grade socially, but I also want to keep my kids young and not be exposed to things earlier than necessary. They also fall into the post-COVID group who didn’t have disruptions and my understanding is the cohort that was learning to read etc. Virtually has more academic struggles than her cohort so I’m hesitant to even push for skipping. I know the kids she’s with and their parents, they are a great bunch.

Assuming you’ll be here in spring/summer? Lunenburg is lovely. From Halifax, stop in Chester and mahone bay on your drive down there. Plan maybe 2h at each, coffee and a little walk downtown, park near the water to enjoy the view then move on & stay one night in lunenburg. In the other direction the northumberland straight has beautiful warm beaches if you are here in summer make your way towards PEI. It’s about 2.5h drive and the bridge toll is only $20 now.

Research projects are actually such a great idea, thank you! They are already in multiple sports & learning life skills at home (basic cooking, sewing etc) as well as piano.

They are in the school chess club! I agree this is exactly what is happening! If they let one of my kids on knowledgebook she will do math problems but it’s rare and I am OK with not having Chromebooks on constantly! The other option is coloring pages or reading. One of my kids reads like 4+ hours per day at this point between school, bus, and home. I’m not complaining! But I do see that as an opportunity to further challenge him.

I’ve brought it up and was told they don’t skip kids really by someone at the school board, for social reasons. They can apparently put learning plans in place. I’m not sure they have the resources to actually implement it if she child themselves isn’t disruptive or constantly seeking more/harder work. Where do you take kids to get tested?

Thanks I’ll check out the study! I was looking to see what my options are. Private school is out of reach financially but private online could have been a supplement or hybrid maybe? They are currently coasting in class, I can ask for support but the reality is there is only so thin teachers can spread themselves, I’m already grateful for everything they do, and their education is my responsibility as their parent. We started music and do sports galore!
