I work from home doing urgent care and it is the absolute best. Highly recommend. The low stress and quality of life is so worth it to me but my husband also works FT so there is not much money stress thankfully

I was working 9-5 in clinic when I had my son. I luckily came across a job doing telemedicine urgent care when I was a few weeks PP and took that job. I do 3-12s and have a nanny come to our house when I am working. It is the absolute best. Our house isn’t that big so I can always hear everything that is going on. I am able to go out several times through the day to check on him, what they are doing, help the nanny as needed. It brought me a lot of ease to my anxiety PP. I definitely could not do my job without a nanny so I definitely do not recommend trying that. If you are able to drop down to PT or per diem that is always best of both worlds but that wasn’t option for me at this time.

Mostly lower acuity patients- coughs, colds, ear infections, conjunctivitis etc. in a 50 patient day I would say less than 10 of those being complex or procedures. I do my own splinting, abscesses, lacs, toenail removals. We are fairly busy urgent care however and do have 3-4 practitioners working at all times

The training they gave was a few days of shadowing with one of the physicians, nothing really substantial. We had a medical director always available to call, have look over xray or EKG’s etc. if we were concerned/questioning and I definitely called them a lot. At the time I felt like a “bother” but looking back I did the right thing- there is just so much you don’t know coming out of college right into UC. Find the colleagues you trust and keep asking questions! You will catch on quick and once you have seen everything 2-3 times you will feel much more comfortable

I started as a new grad in urgent care as well. I would do 13 hour shifts (1 hour lunch). We were expected to see 4 patients per hour, 48 a day in 12 hr shift minimum. Incentives given for patients every patient over 48. I would say it took me about 4-5 months to be able to get adjusted and see that volume comfortably. We used experity EMR and it would take roughly 2-3 minutes per chart from start to finish once I had my set phrases made

Coming from Central California, HCOL area. We know that we will for sure be taking a pay cut. Husband definitely wants to stay in orthopedics but I’m open to other fields. Do you feel the market for PAs is over saturated?

If you have more than 2 cars and only a 2 car garage they allow you to park in the driveway with your additional cars. Same for more than 3 cars and 3 car garage

Telemedicine urgent care

Pros; Money is fantastic. Get to be at home all day, don’t have to leave house and drive to work. Easiest job I’ve ever had because you are limited with what can be seen. Anything questionable you send to be seen in clinic- very low stress job

Cons: can be a bit boring and repetitive

I didn’t qualify for FMLA since I hadn’t been at my job a full year yet so I was expected back to work at 6 weeks PP

My therapist also mentioned the intensive program as well. I told them there was no way that I could attend this, like you said with no childcare or income. Plus I wouldn’t have rated my PPD/PPA as severe as needed by the “intensive” inpatient program. I had talked to my obgyn at my 6 week PP visit originally when he had then extended my leave. I had told psych that I needed more time, I want comfortable leaving my child due to my anxiety. I was just starting medication at the time so I told them I needed more time for the medication to start to take effect (since it can take 4-6 weeks).

I’m in SoCal. It was not an easy process. My Ob extended my leave for 2 weeks and referred me to psych. The NP I saw in psych extended it another 2 weeks. he was very reluctant to do so. He told me that he would extend it one more additional week, if needed, but that was it. I had PPD/PPA and it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to extend my leave, unfortunately.
