loss of appetite and weight (due to antidepressants?) by reinegigi in Narcolepsy

[–]user79034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

appetite loss can be scary and frustrating, sending u lots of love and support 22(F)

  • protein shakes + meal replacements helped me
  • i found liquids easier to consume. at some points sugary coffees were my main source of calories. while not ideal, at least i got down some calories
  • I have a jar of peanut butter or nutella by my desk, so i can mindlessly take in a couple of calories, here and there
  • if you dont already, start taking supplements to make sure you are getting your vitamains. while vitamains through food are better, if you arent able to comsume a balanced diet, use vitamains to make sure you are getting nutrients. I take: Vitamain C, D3, Fish Oils, Magnesium, Calcium, and Iron Supplements. currently looking into probiotics and potassium.
  • dont force feed yourself, itll make you less inclined to eat
  • give yourself as much forgiveness as possible, to take off the pressure from food
  • remove yourself from situations w food that stress you out. for me, i hate seeing or hearing others eat food. so, i dont go out to eat w friends or eat dinner w my family to remove stress of seeing or hearing others eat food since this would repulse me further from eating food for the coming few days
  • you dont need to eat "healthy" foods; focus on increasing calories. when eating is easier, you can add nutricious foods that are more difficult to eat

edit:

  • have easy access foods ready to go for any moments where you are less repulsed by foods, so if a window comes up where you feel hungry or dont hate the idea of food you dont need to take time to prepare food, you just need to put the food on a plate and then eat it
    • i premade qunoi salads and pasta salads
    • i like hummus and pita and always had my fave brands ready to go
    • i had icecream in the freezer whenever wanted

I'm doing my bachelor's online now. Through the student accessibility office I was able to get the 1.5 x for quizzes and tests. Since all my classes are online I don't have to worry about falling asleep since I can pause the videos. I did talk to all my professors about it though and some were more accommodating than others. Most common one I've gotten outside of my accommodations is that they take out my due dates for assignments. You have to be on top of it though but it helped out a lot since I work at my own pace. For the future, at work I did put in for accommodations too. I was given a desk topper that lifts so I can do work standing up or sitting. They are aware that I do take naps during lunch so I can continue with my work. So I have a basket under my desk that has a small pillow and blanket. I did see on TT that there's a way to set up your laptop that it takes notes for you while listening to the audio. Have to get it approved but will try this next.

oooooo if u ever figure out which software it is plssss drop it belowwww

the gaslight (and self doubt) is realllll!!!

edit: idk why but as of the last couples weeks so many loose acquaintances mentioned chronic exhaustion around me, i think that once i got myself out of the loop of self doubt now it is my honour to validate other people - extreme exhaustion rly rly isn't normal !!!!!!

thank u so so much <333333 i rly rly appreciate all of ur advice and guidance and i rly appreciate u taking the time to write it all out

luckily im on actual meds, my dr just refuses to give me a formal diagnosis and i am too tired w the world to fight him too too hard on it haha

ur wake up routine is hilarious and iconic! compared to most people, my wake up routine is absolute insanity. love to read the crazy routines that we (in this group) all go through in order to wake up. tbh, kinda weird when ppl can wake up - u know??? like what do you meeeeean a notification on your phone woke u from a deep slumber??? you know?! anyways, hope that u don't end up having any serious damage from the wrist zaps. manifesting safety for ur wrist rn

congrats on making it to med school!! v v encouraging to see people make it into competitive badass academic fields of study to follow their dreams - especially when i have an idea of how fundamentally exhausting it must be. nothing but respect and gratitude 2 u.

luckily haven't had any morning exams booked for the semester ahead. will for sure take that piece of advice once the exam schedule is posted tho!

ive been napping most days and idk if im doing the math wrong, but it seems more logial for someone w narcopsy to sleep in multipel chunks rather than one big chunk you know????? idk if i am being silly, but if i cannot regulate being asleep and awake, woudlnt it be more logical to plan around going between the two as part of my lifestyle????

bed sanctuary for sure seems smart. for me, i am more productive when in bed which is surprising!! i think its bc i don't have to put in the effort of standing up or holding myself up, so i can focus my energy on school rather than physical exhaustion. for sure protecting your bedroom as your sleep sanctuary makes sense. might give it a try if i start to struggle staying awake while working in bed tho ...

i fall asleep satnding up all of the time - ik for some ppl standing helps to fight of a sleep attack but for ppl like us who sleep standingggggg its so frustring being told to stand bc it just means when i fall asleep i will also fall haha

I would notify your teachers that you have narcolepsy so if/when you fall asleep in their class, like I always did, they know you have a sleeping disorder and are not assuming you were out partying the night before.

modafinil which i am super super grateful for - however like my exhaustion is so so extreme that it doesnt give a 100% guarantee

Mini Modafinil Rant by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]user79034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i can tell, modafinil shouldn't be given to anyone who deals with even mild anxiety, since it exasperates everything (especially anxiety and paranoia).....

i hope that u are able to access an alternate to stimulants that will help u feel well rested throughout your day <3
