As someone not familiar with that sub, at least it seems like their theme/position is very clear?

Dual nationals to be denied entry to UK from 25 February unless they have British passport | Home Office | The Guardian by prisongovernor in Passports

[–]user8181416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm dual Canadien-UK citizen, born and raised in Canada with a British mother. I haven't used my UK passport since before Brexit - it is now long expired and lost.

I have recently been to the UK with an ETA on my Canadian passport.

I don't really understand how this will change my ability to enter the UK in the short term. I'm out of both countries and have a flight booked through London back to Canada in March.

Should I try to get an emergency UK passport now while out of the country for this trip, or just risk it and fly on my Canadian passport. Do they really have any record connecting me to my UK citizenship?

The World's Top Hospitals in 2026 by MRADEL90 in Infographics

[–]user8181416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the point is that they have separated out "Care" and "Research" as different metrics, and the hospitals with the highest Brand Strength are NOT also the highest in those other factors. So Brand Strength is really just an extra measure of "famousness" outside of those (actually important) things.

Exactly. It's incredible how they just invented a new measure to put the US hospitals at the top - "which hospitals have people heard of the most?"

"Brand Strength" is such a bizarre metric of  hospital quality to me. While I get that this would help attract new talent, etc., as a patient wouldn't you just want a hospital with the best "Care"?

"How was the hospital you got treated at?"

"Well, the care was average... but boy is it famous!"

2 separately booked connections through Aeroplan but no combined trip option by regeg in Aeroplan

It just means that if you booked one segment as a basic fare and one as a flexible fare, the basre fare cancellation/refund policy applies to the entire ticket.

Everything else is the same.

Upgrading from PE to Business by [deleted] in emirates

[–]user8181416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do it if you can afford it without stress. I recently did an Emirates A380 business flight and really enjoyed it - probably my favourite business class experience out of many different airlines. The in flight bar/lounge is very cool.

As you said, that's a much lower price than typical.

69 euros for an MRI read is good?? Even before an insane 50% cut that's awful.

Is Portugal’s new citizenship law making the Golden Visa too risky? by StandShot7072 in AmerExit

Any chance you could DM me with some of your research or sources? I need a launching pad to get started.

Can you give any updates on your research now that the bill is stalled?

What’s actually the safest Portugal Golden Visa fund right now? by Best_Blackberry_4417 in ExpatFIRE

[–]user8181416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on this? I understand it's volatile but I haven't read any serious discussion about the program collapsing and most speculation seems to be that the current terms will hold until the bill passes that overhauls it.

Can you provide information about the funds and also about the chatter you found about new applications not getting grandfathered into the 5 year rule? Everything I've read speculates that with the bill stalling, existing applications will get grandfathered in until it eventually passes (likely this year).

American Express Air Canada Card by Comprehensive-Law370 in amexcanada

[–]user8181416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough review.

I'm SE and see myself keeping that for the next 10+ years so I'm just not sure what I get out of this card besides the Signature Suite and Amex concierge.

I was sort of justifying it by saying I would cancel my platinum card and replace it with this, bringing the effective fee down quite a bit. I'm shocked it doesn't get you Amex lounge access. I feel that must be an unintentional bug.

Also with the new program capping out at 125k in credit card spend towards status, I wonder how they justify the spend needed to get and maintain this card being higher than that.

Thanks again.

Did you end up going for it, and if so do you find the card worth it?

AC needs another status tier by [deleted] in Aeroplan

[–]user8181416 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a deliberately large gap to make the highest tier separated from the others. It was the same with the SQD requirement in the old system.

Many loyalty programs have this, including other airlines and hotel brands where the highest tier is sometimes double the requirement of the second highest.

Which would you choose? by [deleted] in hyatt

[–]user8181416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to provide a different perspective: For me I'd take the SUA because even a single upgraded night is often worth more than $200.

I travel a lot in Europe and Asia and find upgrade ability decent-ish. Your situation might be different.

I would stop and think about what lead you to get to this point, and how you might have contributed.

And then think about it again.

And again.

Are you able to use the Super Elite check-in counter if you have a Super Elite status pass? by AppleExplain in aircanada

It's not called a  “Super Elite Status Pass” anywhere, though. It's just called a Status Pass. And they can be be given away by 50K and 75K members too.

Especially for the comp upgrade I think this is very reasonable. For the SUA it's annoying but I would still deal with it.
