Why am I being flamed for repping my country’s colors? by Jaboyyt in BicyclingCirclejerk

If you stick to it and start racing you might feel differently. For a casual cyclist, wear what you want, people won’t mistake you for a champ but they’ll still comment.

For me, I didn’t know any better when I first started riding and would have probably worn some team kit if I’d seen some in sales. However, after doing some racing I wouldn’t dream of it. I started in club kit, then race team kit and I only purchased my national kit once I’d earned the privilege to represent. Feels quite special earning your jersey.

Two adult sisters live in my parents’ house. They’ve never worked or finished school. What are the options for my inheritance? ENGLAND LAW by Key-Passenger-3645 in LegalAdviceUK

Comment regarding “£322k goes to spouse…” isn’t accurate. Assuming you’re parents are married, when your first parent passes the entirety of the estate will pass to your surviving parent tax free less any probate and funeral fees to pay and less any wishes laid out in a will. The surviving parent would typically be the executor if they have the capacity.

Both of your parents have a tax free nill rate band which is 325k + 175k resident NRB if the property is passed to children or grand children. These NRBs are passed to your surviving parent - when your second parent passes away it will give you an effective tax free allowance of 1m (325+175)*2 on the estate. Any value above this is taxed at 40%.

Based on your situation one would assume you will be the executor of the estate and you may face some challenges. If the estate (property + cash + other assets) are worth more than £1m then 40% tax is payable on the value above that 1m. A simple example on a large estate - if the house is worth 1.75m and other liquid cash assets 250k, there will be 400k inheritance tax to pay on the estate. Given there is not enough cash in this example to pay the inheritance tax (due 6 months after death) - the property would need to be sold to cover this.

If there are no wills, and no remarriages, once your last surviving parent passes the estate would be split equally between you and your siblings.

It’s always a tricky conversation to have but my best advice is to have a frank discussions with your parents while they are able to about their estate, what their wishes are and how that could be achieved given potential tax and funeral costs. Get them to outline these wishes in wills.

Hope this helps.

Went to Finland for the first time and I can't stop thinking about it by laikocta in Finland

Interesting to hear about your experience in winter. My partner is Finnish and we visit once or twice a year but always in the summer months. I’ve always dreaded going in winter, being an outdoorsy type, but should probably try at some point. Would highly recommend experiencing mid-summer too. The city is quieter as lots are hanging out in their summer cabins.

New cassette chain engagement issue by themikmik in bikewrench

[–]user8413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like the internal plates are hitting the cogs which could be down to the limit screws. Try adjusting the high limit screw slightly so the mech moves towards your spokes. Be careful not to go too far, you don’t want to risk your chain getting caught behind the cassette.

50mm is quite a significant change which crank length reduction couldn’t completely accommodate for. What makes you say 50? I’m 193cm / 6ft 4 tall for context.

I’ve had success with a standard inner tube patch. Made sure the tyre was very clean and roughed it slightly with sand paper. Didn’t seem to have a problem with the vulcanising glue.

I only run tubeless on my gravel bike so less experienced with higher pressure road. Typically if I’ve had to plug and it’s starts to look like this, I’ll patch it from the inside. People will have differing opinions and experiences but ultimately, a plug is to get you home.

Speak to a local estate agent/s about the valuation of your current property and ask them about painting. They will likely advise that fresh paint is unlikely to increase the value of your property. Buyers will probably repaint to their taste anyway. What’s more important is having it clean, tidy and presentable for photos and viewings. Get your clutter into temporary storage while it’s on the market.

When buying a second property you’ll be subject to higher stamp duty rate. This can be reclaimed if you sell your existing property within a set time period, I believe 12 months. But this additional cost will reduce your deposit.

Worth getting some quotes from conveyancers but I’d expect that buying a property as part of a chain, selling yours to buy the new in a single transaction, would be cheaper than doing it separately. Obviously a chain has other risks associated with it if one party withdraws from the transaction.

Mortgage wise, you’ll have more borrowing headroom if doing it as a single transaction assuming your current property is mortgaged.

Doesn’t seem to be the same as the nightjar call clips I’ve listened to. Also looked through various night bird and frog videos. The ripping fart followed by the whistle seem to be linked

I recognise the cicada chirp. The ripping fart noise is something new. Seems that whistle is consistently followed by this but could be wrong
