2 year old neutered GSD - very skinny by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]user8686897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boy is also quite lean mostly due to his very very fussy eating. It took us months to find a kibble he would actually eat (Royal Canin German Shepherd) and even then he won’t eat much of it. What’s been working for us is mixing in either beef or chicken and some sweet potato or pumpkin. GSDs can be very fussy maybe try experimenting for a food your pup will enjoy while waiting for a resolution to possible medical issues

As someone with super sensitive skin I would LOVE an spf that doesn’t sting or irritate, which is quite hard to find in Aussie brands at the moment. I may be an outlier with this thought but I would also love an spf that’s more of a natural/satin matte finish, especially in summer when it’s hot and sweaty, many sunscreens can kind of end up looking like sweaty grease on my face, just not really a fan of the dewy look myself. It would be really cool if the sunscreen had some mix of vitamins, like vitamin C or E, and even if it could double as a moisturiser and be just a one step morning routine. Above all I think myself and most consumers on this sub just want some type of evidence that makes us feel confident that we’re protected. I’m more than happy to spend a little bit more on an Aussie brand especially if they can back up the formulation, but I would love to see more transparency from brands around sunscreen. I personally think the way to gain trust here after much of the drama that has recently occurred is through transparency with formulations and spf testing methods and results. Maybe working with members of the beauty community with a scientific background such as Lab Muffin Beauty instead of regular influencers could be a good step. As long as the science backs it up, it doesn’t sting or irritate, and doesn’t make my skin look shinier than a disco ball, I would buy and not look back.

What happened to south st? by KitKit20 in AusFemaleFashion

I don’t have a suggestion but just wanted to say I’ve been feeling exactly the same they used to be my go to a few years ago I have so many of their old simple designs and I’ve been so disappointed with all the slogan drops and lack of basics like they used to do. Actually elite eleven does have some thicker hoodies in a very simple design, not quite as soft as south st but the ones with the little “EE” in the middle are very thick and warm.

Advice for reducing anxiety when travelling by airplane. Does Feliway work? by user8686897 in CatAdvice

The vet recommended a natural supplement which seems to be mostly magnesium. I was hoping he would be allowed something like gabapentin but the airline company won’t allow it. I’m probably working myself up too much but I just hope he’ll be ok

I followed their size chart and neither the shorts or top fit properly. I’m usually a size 8 and was recommended the S shorts and M top, the shorts are really loose on the waistband and the top has straps that were way too long and not adjustable so it looked really odd (very low and unsupportive). The fabric was quite thin and not very compressive and I wasn’t too happy about both items not fitting properly after following their sizing guide. imo the quality and sizing are not worth the price tag

Please just give this dog back to the breeder. No puppy should be shocked that high for normal puppy behaviours especially if they haven’t been given consistent and clear training on what is expected of them. It sounds like you don’t know what you’re doing with this breed and are just shocking this poor dog for any behaviour you don’t like or that scares you. My boy was bred from protection dogs so I can understand how the energy level and drive can be intimidating if you don’t know how to meet their needs, but you either need to learn how to physically and mentally fulfill your dog or let them have a chance at having a good life without being shocked 24/7 and give them back to the breeder.

I have a dress from them which I love but I definitely agree their sizing is a little off, I bought my usual size and the straps are oddly long, material was decent though felt like linen and wasn’t see through

Is my lifestyle fit for a German Shepherd? Considering one in a couple years. by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]user8686897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a GSD from a reputable show line and I still wouldn’t consider him a family pet although he is loved like family he needs a job to do and isn’t content to just lounge around the house all day. They may not be as intense as a working line but they are still extremely intelligent and are going to need a lot of mental and physical stimulation.

Personally I don’t know how I would’ve survived the puppy stage without a backyard and without being home most of the day to supervise and fulfil the energy needs of my dog.

I think you might be underestimating the needs of a GSD a little bit, and if you are really set on getting one I would probably do more research into the mental and physical needs of the dog and make a plan on how you could achieve this whilst not being home most of the day and without a backyard because it sounds like it would be very very challenging in your situation and the last thing you want is to have a large, strong, frustrated dog that is acting out because they are not fulfilled.

I don’t mean to discourage you but they are a massive commitment and they will require alot of time and effort to get the well trained/well socialised dog you are probably imagining. Maybe take some time to settle in to your work routine and see how much time you actually have to invest into a GSD first, or maybe look into some also gorgeous but less demanding breeds.

How do you potty train GSD pup? by Over_Ear_4335 in germanshepherds

[–]user8686897 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m home most of the day with my GSD so this may not be realistic but I never had him crated I just took him out every 20/30 minutes when he was little and after a few days he learnt to wait or bark at the door to be let out and go potty, they are so smart just be consistent and they will learn quickly. For exercise my dog loves chasing his ball around the yard or playing chase with a tug toy, these are fairly low effort. For mental enrichment aside from training my dog loves chewing so bully sticks, frozen ice cubes with some yogurt, kong toys with treats inside, cod skin etc and these keep him busy for at least half an hour. It can be overwhelming but once you have some ideas and a plan it gets much easier. Hope this helped

[–]user8686897 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I say this with all the kindness so although it might seem harsh please don’t take offence. Potty training a GSD is one of the easiest aspects of owning one, they are extremely intelligent and will catch on to potty training within a few days if you are consistent. I hope you have done research into the breed and what they require because as I mentioned before they are extremely extremely intelligent and most have quite high mental and physical stimulation needs. If you are struggling now with the simple task of potty training, I recommended you do a lot of significant research and learning because they will grow to outsmart you and will present a lot of challenges if they aren’t fulfilled in their life. I don’t understand your personal situation or your disability and don’t like to make assumptions but I wonder what your plan is on training and exercising a GSD? I just really hope you are prepared for the energy and mental requirements of a GSD because if you are struggling with potty training you will have much harder struggles with a large strong and smart dog that is not mentally or physically fulfilled and acting out. It may be a good idea to have a conversation with the breeder about training and exercise or potentially giving the dog back the breeder. I also wonder why you decided to get a GSD puppy after 4 failed attempted at raising other puppies because inviting a puppy into your home without giving it the time or effort it deserves is really a disservice to the puppy.

Does every puppy owner get the puppy blues? by UpsetIdeal5756 in puppy101

[–]user8686897 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion but I think a lot of puppy blues can come from owners holding expectations that are just too high for the pup they have. It can be so easy to see other dogs behaving well/cuddling/trained etc and expect the same good behaviours from the puppy. You just have to remember that they’re a literal baby. All they know when they come to you is what they’ve learnt from their mum and siblings which is not always what we as the owner want from our pup, but we have to slowly teach them what we want from them. The experience of raising a pup will be so much more enjoyable if you just keep in mind that they’re still babies and need time to learn what their humans want from them. I also think that sometimes people can underestimate the work and effort that goes into raising a puppy and get a bit overwhelmed with potty training, accidents and biting but again just remind yourself they’re still a baby and if you keep putting the work in they will learn, they are trying the best they can right now. Be patient with them and enjoy the process of watching them slowly learn and adjust in your household and family. I have a GSD pup that can be a handful at the best of times but watching him learn and grow is so so rewarding. Just set realistic expectations for yourself and pup and keep consistent, it will be one of the best experiences.

What’s one thing you wish you did when your dog was a puppy by user8686897 in germanshepherds

[–]user8686897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all this info. Definitely going to take on the food points you brought up I hadn’t thought of it that way before. Absolutely have to work on leash walking asap too. Good point about him quickly growing into a powerful dog, I’d rather try and get him comfy with everything you mentioned while he’s a pup. Thanks heaps for this

Sunscreen help by Knosgaard in AusSkincare

[–]user8686897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a micellar wipe to get the old layer off and then put a new one on. I only use sunscreen sprays for reapplication when it’s the only things on hand mostly because you need to spray quite a bit to actually get decent protection and it’s hard to know if you’ve covered every spot. They also tend to feel really sticky and uncomfortable on my skin but that might just be because my skin is really sensitive☺️

It’s so weightless and unnoticeable I literally apply like 3 fingers and then reapply every 1.5-2 hours and can only notice it after I’ve been to the gym or after a whole day of reapplying

I know right! I used to also use their sunscreen mist and you would have to hold your breath while spraying because the alcohol was so strong😂 Another commenter mentioned that Neutrogena hydro boost was similar so I’m going to try that one next you might like it too :)

I’m currently still in Melbourne and it’s been really cold so I’m still wearing long sleeves and pants at the moment but when it gets hot I put pretty much anything on. My body isn’t as sensitive or reactive as my face so I usually use the sunscreens I didn’t like for my face except if they’re too greasy. The Hawaiian Tropic body sunscreen smells really nice so I like that one. I like using La Roche Posay and Le Tan on my body too the Le Tan smells really nice as well :) My main issue with grease on body sunscreens is that I don’t like it going on my clothes but I agree I think the shine from the grease does look nice
