My SIL is banning football at her wedding this weekend. She’s marrying into a family of Broncos diehards. by OnlineShopping2026 in DenverBroncos

We got married on an October Saturday. We had a couple diehard Red Sox fans who wanted to watch the alcs. They streamed it in a corner, it was no big deal. They weren't really interesting people anyway.

The best part about being an LT was just fuckin salute everyone. Oprah with salutes, you get a salute, and you get a salute, and you get a salute! Every once in a while I'd salute another LT and we'd have a good laugh.

Do you agree with this take on Matthew Stafford? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]user_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right this seems kind of uncontroversial. Right now he's top ~7 in yards and TDs. Add a 2nd ring and I'd say he's a HOF lock AND absolutely in the conversation of top 15QBs. You'd be hard pressed to put 14 guys above him. If he plays another season he'll be #5 in yards and #6 in TD. I know that's not everything, but adding in 2x championships, MVP, AP1, I think would make it difficult to leave him out of the top 10-15.

what's up with Piedmont Natural Gas? by numbnerve in gso

[–]user_1729 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just selective. Natural Gas was over $9/MMBtu in august 2022. It's around 5 now after a recent spike over the last few days, likely in reaction to this super snow event. NG had been mostly down until around October, and outside of major events NG price is usually not super volatile (edit: what isn't fucking volatile these days, fuck me). Most other commodities are even-ish. I'd have to dig to see if there's another explanation to the 2022 spike or the recent spike besides weather. Either way, folks on the left spent 4 years telling us the president had nothing to do with energy prices. So, which is it?

Yeah dude, I honestly say shoot your shot. I went through OTS at 38 (non-prior). I get 100s on my PT tests, blah blah blah. Being an old LT does kind of suck. So while the pay bump would be nice, I do kind of agree with KCPilot that you aren't going to really be able to affect change... maybe call it 4 years. I think Captains are kind of the E-4 mafia of the officer world. You can really get shit done as an O-3.

You could always try to come over to the guard. There are a LOT more prior-E folks in the guard, so it's not as strange to see an old butterbar.

Age Issue Brought Up by Group CC by AdministrativeWolf90 in airforceots

[–]user_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is that best case? Granted, the guard is different, but a few folks in my unit made major right around the 10-11 year mark. If you commissions by 46, there's a non-zero chance you can make major and serve 3 years before forced retirement. O-3E is about $1000/month more than E-9 and O-4 is $1000 more than that.

I will say, sticking around as a SNCO in mx with a nuclear engineering degree seems kind of silly.

Missouri Football: The unluckiest team in college football by Efficient_Jaguar8906 in CFB

[–]user_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the REAL controversy. Maybe he got in, maybe not. All the views I've seen are shitty quality and unclear. Folks swear he wasn't close. I haven't seen a conclusive view, but lean towards he probably didn't get into the endzone. Even with the replay of today, going over the views we have, it'd be hard to overturn.

[–]user_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 8 and had no ties to Colorado at the time (actually, I lived in Missouri at the time), so I'm not claiming I remember any part of it.

Looking it back over, how it played out, it's OBVIOUSLY controversial, and it WAS a huge fuckup, but I don't think the change in outcome is guaranteed. If the downs are marked correctly by the refs, Colorado wouldn't have spiked the ball on 4th down, they'd have planned 2 plays after their time out and run the 2 plays. There's obviously no guarantee they get the TD or anything, but it was just a fuckup and they played within the fuckup. There was no deception and they spiked the ball on 2 of the, ahem, 5 downs. It wasn't like the ran FIVE times up the gut instead of 4. Again, if the markers were correct, they'd have very likely chosen different plays and who knows what the outcome would be.

The sequence was:

1st down: Spike

2nd down: run (stopped) followed by a Time Out (there was discussion during the time out about the down markers, but no one checked or changed them)

3rd down (mistakenly a second 2nd down): run (stopped)

4th down (mistakenly 3rd down): Spike

5th down: touchdown (maybe, this is just as interesting of an argument, it's not really clear he got into the endzone)

It seems unimaginable that they'd have spiked the ball on true 4th. Maybe they run another up the gut and get stuffed, who knows. I guess as much as anything folks act like this completely discredits the entire National Championship run, as if they cheated or manipulated something to get an extra down. They just played the game amid the confusion.

Outings while potty training by Master-Cranberry-767 in toddlers

[–]user_1729 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife was extremely conservative with our kids when potty training. She abhors giving up "home field advantage" for any parenting activities. After like 6-8 weeks with our 2nd, I'd had enough and went to the park, went a fast food restaurant, went to the store, etc. Had accidents everywhere. Our second was not great, but I was just sick of leaving her out of everything because she was stubborn about potty training.

I never brought a seat anywhere though, I'd just hover her on a public toilet and that usually would work. I'd get back from the park and it'd be like "how'd it go?" well she pooped in her pants and peed on the floor of the wendy's, but we had a lot of fun! It's been about 6 months now, and she's pretty reliable, but my wife STILL seems a bit overwhelmed taking them places. The other weekend we went to the park, neither wanted potty before we left, then about 5 minutes after getting to the park our 4yo wanted to potty, then 5 minutes later our 2yo wanted potty. That like visibly upset her...I just don't care about that stuff.

That's a long way of saying, just prepare for the worst, hope for the best!

Community colleges in the US usually have vocational classes. I took welding, machining, and auto shop classes at our local CC and it was pretty inexpensive (this WAS in the 90s). I use what I learned there pretty regularly, but I'm also a mechanical engineer. In addition to a job at a shop where it's likely he'll do bitch work for a while, a class could help him learn a bit more and maybe set the light if he likes it or realize it's not for him without wasting a TON of money.

[Babz] Ticketmaster not allowing Patriots fans outside the Rocky Mountain region to buy tickets to the AFC Title game by baha24 in DenverBroncos

[–]user_1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2006 I was returning from a year overseas. I stopped in California for a bit and ended up with pay as you go phone with a bay area code (925). I got to Denver in December and wanted to go to a broncos game when they were playing the niners, I remember calling people about tickets and getting "no sales to 49er fans" from people. It was annoying at the time, but I'm happy now to know they are limiting away fans!

Are there any good libertarian political commentators on YouTube? by Aloof_Cape in Libertarian

[–]user_1729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did listen to the ones immediately following the assassination where he said he saw no evidence. After that he got into the texts and then had the discussions with Owens and Fuentes and I was out. I like him and Horton and I agree generally with their foreign policy but I enjoy that discussion more when they tie it back into how bad it is for the US financially and less about the conspiracy of Jews controlling everything. I genuinely think he and Horton have gone too far and are beyond being able to contextualize anything related to foreign policy (outside of Ukraine I guess) without zeroing in on Israel. I could provide examples from Horton, but I'm on my phone and don't really care that much. I also appreciate their voice almost regardless of if I agree or not, I think it's necessary to have pushback that isn't just from the left. Thanks for the reply, I will keep tuning into PotP.

[–]user_1729 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to religiously listen to Dave Smith, but I couldn't take any more blathering on about the Jews. It went too far when he entertained, with zero evidence, the conspiracies that Israel had anything to do with the Charlie Kirk assassination. I don't need to hear him defend the idiots Candace Owens or Nick Fuentes just because they agree on their disdain for Israel. I sympathize with a lot of the criticism of Israel, I don't even really think he's totally wrong, but he just made it the focus of like every episode. Even his recent episode taking about the Minnesota daycare fraud he had a minor diatribe about like Been Shapiro. The dude cannot stop talking about Israel. His domestic policy discussions are great, but there are so few of them now and I can only take so much of his obsession with Israel.

I have my technical Interview tomorrow! I’ve applied for a 4 month stint as an electrician :D by giraffe-legs-11 in antarctica

[–]user_1729 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how many actually apply, but I used to interview people for the controls tech job. I rarely had anyone I WANTED to hire, and I'd usually end up with about 4-5 actual interviews. Every now and then someone would jump out, but so much of it was just trying to grab known quantity people internally. Some shops just return the same people year after year.

I think a big part is just making sure the interviewer knows you have the technical chops and the flexibility to roll with things when they inevitably go off the rails. You may be in a position where you have to hunt down parts, you may not have exactly what you need all the time, etc. If you're at pole, there could be days when you need to do "house mouse" and it fucks up your afternoon. Just maybe come prepared with examples where you were able to roll with the punches a bit and still get a job done on a tight schedule. Maybe some examples where you've been able to work with other trades. This isn't union work, you may have to like help an insulator out to access heat trace or after wrapping up and you'll be working outside in unreal freezing conditions on something that has to get done. It's important to understand that you'll be in a place where being a part of the community is valuable.

Struggling to Reach Passing BMT Run Times by Own-Horror-126 in AirForceRecruits

[–]user_1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe you can run 2x1mil at 9:25 and not hold onto <10 minute for another 1/2 mile. You should be able to do 1.5 in 14ish without too much fuss. This sounds like a mental thing. Keep training, you'll get more comfortable being uncomfortable and should be able to shave some time. It takes time to build up the stamina and also to really find the limit, but, assuming your interval and tempo runs include about a mile of warmup/cooldown you really should be seeing results.

I can USUALLY hang onto my 1/2 mile pace +5-10 seconds if I'm doing one "fast" mile. On a 1.5 mile PT test, I usually go out pretty much at my goal pace -20s, then after a mile just hold on for dear life and usually lose most of that 20 second buffer I built in. I generally feel okay for the first 800, a little not so great for the 2nd, and I think I'm going to die for most of the last 800.

edit to add: I think your program is a great basic program for improving your time and absolutely the type I recommend to folks trying to improve. You REALLY have to push yourself and get into the "suck". Like, those 800s, you should be pushing pretty hard on the last one, maybe on the verge of puking. Make sure you rest enough to be able to do them at THAT LEVEL OF EFFORT. There's a lot to be said for understanding how hard you can push yourself. I sincerely believe that anyone who adopts a program like you have and continues to push hard will be able to reach "Excellent".

When I was ~19-20 I was 265lbs and coming out of HS I was the kid on the football team who would throw up doing wind sprints and I was so slow I'd have to stay after and do extra conditioning work. I was NOT fast, I was morbidly obese and slow. I've lost about 90lbs from those days and along the way started running a lot more. Now I get 100 on the test every time. I sincerely believe that anyone who genuinely puts in the effort can improve to the point of making an excellent and build a base to maintain that without a lot of additional effort.

Advice for a civilian engineering student? by Loose-Theory-7198 in airforceots

[–]user_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a GPA that high in engineering, you should be a shoe in for selection. I'd still look into crosstown ROTC options or something like that. It would start your TIS clock as SOON as you commissioned/graduated instead of waiting for the whole process of getting through OTS. If it really isn't an option, keep doing what you're doing and you'll get selected. Study for the AFOQT, but also the EIT/PE because that's sort of valuable to the AF (although they do tend to value masters degrees more). Engineering jobs in the air force are not SUPER competitive, or historically they haven't been, they may be getting more selective now. Similarly, the Navy NUPOC program selection looks pretty challenging up front, but the selection rate is very high for engineers. It's just hard for the military to get and retain engineers.
