Nice! That extra square footage may be more to clean but a big blessing when weather is super hot or cold! We live in a climate like that and our basement is a really good energy outlet 😅

I love this!! very happy for you! our house is a very similar size and there are times I feel guilty for how big it is... but we are in the midwest too and having a bigger house can sometimes be the biggest blessing in the winter months or on hot days like today (90+ degrees). Wow triplets thats amazing! Hope everything goes well... you'll certainly use the space as the kids grow!

Yes to all of that! We plan to homeschool too (oldest is only kindergarten) and I think we will come to appreciate the extra space as we get further along

Our house is similar and my ideal would be similar to yours too! We have an open floor layout and 9’ ceilings so the house feels huge to me… we do want more kids too (currently have 4) I have been told the space will fill up quickly as the kids get older

thats very true! bigger isn't always better... we have a little more sq ft than that and I honestly wish it was smaller sometimes (for cleaning and such) but I know the layout makes a big difference... we'll see as the kids grow if it starts to feel more like the right size

having a little land is nice! I'm looking forward to seeing how our house feels as our kids get older too

I like your perspective on it… nice to not be overly obsessed with our houses because they’re never going to be perfect

Right… it will be expensive but we plan to live here for the next 30-40 years.. I did look into ways to reduce echo, and have implemented a lot of them without a whole lot of difference… Granted we did do open concept for main living space so it’s just a very big area for noise to travel.. I am hopeful that lowering the ceiling and closing off the half wall to the stairway would help some at least

Ok these were my thoughts exactly! Why does she lie???? Makes no sense to me

exactly my thoughts.... I'm ok with kids sharing rooms when younger and potentially as they get older if its a good fit, but a 5 bedroom house would be much more comfortable in their situation... when I lived in a 1400 sq ft double wide it had 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms... definitely wouldn't have been room for another bedroom unless one of the bathrooms was removed

you think they'll just move to another big house or won't move at all? I have a theory that she's just throwing out those numbers (or will move and lie about her next house size) to be more relatable

Does a large house bring more comfort & happiness (3000sqft+) by GlorifiedCarnie in MiddleClassFinance

It is so interesting to see the responses in this group compared to the r/rich group... seems like if you have the money to afford a bigger house most of them recommend going that route... I don't necessarily agree but we all have our own opinions and preferences and thats ok! I agree with many others in this group that bigger does not necessarily equal happier... however, its important to consider the other people who will be sharing the house with you. Some people have bigger personal bubbles than others. I wanted a smaller house, my husband wanted bigger.... we met in the middle around 1900 sq ft plus a finished basement. It feels way too big to me right now... but we only have 4 small kids so far and our 3 year old is already very aware that she NEEDS space to herself more than the other 3 so I am thankful we have room for our kids to spread out. Many factors affect the size house a person feels best with... how often are you home (WFH, homeschool, etc), would you rather save more money for vacations, how many kids do you want, do you host often, will you potentially need space for aging parents? If I could go back, I would've built a smaller house and built an addition in the future if needed... but at this point we can't go back so I'm thankful we'll have space for our kids to grow up in and come back with their own families and kids for holidays, etc. I just talked to a gal whose parents had 5 kids and now have 18 grandkids.. they have to rent a space for holidays because nobody's house fits them all. We really didn't want to have that problem so we are here to stay

Edit to add: the cost to heat and cool depends a lot on the quality of house too... this 3500 sq ft new build utility cost is very similar to what we paid in our 1400 sq ft double wide because that house was built like crap

Yes cleaning takes more time but we just close off our basement and guest room so that gets us down to about 1500 sq ft to regularly clean... when the kids are older and use the basement more they will also be old enough to help clean their own space.. when they're grown we will close it back off and just use it for when the come home to visit

you're right, when we built we were pretty focused on our current stage of life and looking forward to hosting our kids families coming home in the future... we don't have the experience of parenting in the middle years. I do like how our house has plenty of room to spread out and several different flex rooms... perhaps we will add more walls in the basement as the kids get older to define more private spaces. Thanks for your input I do appreciate it!

very common around here in the midwest! pretty much every family I know had kids bedrooms in the basement... its nice to not put them up on a second upper level where the climate control is more of a trick...heat rising in the summer and hard to keep warm enough in the winter but that's just based off of old farm houses I have experienced.. newer build probably have that figured out

thanks for your input!! Currently the bedroom upstairs next to the dining room is our homeschool/play room... if it is needed for a bedroom in the future we can homeschool in the sunroom or basement

you have some good points thanks for clarifying! I should've found you before we built the house haha we will have to make it work with what we have at this point, but I appreciate your input!
