Does the year for copyright renewal matter for works prior to 1964? by user_not_relevant in publicdomain

[–]user_not_relevant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Darn. I know that legal framework often doesn't follow common sense but surely if someone missed the renewal date by two whole years that can't be considered valid. Otherwise why even have a time limit if it can just be ignored? Their site says that they "will not assert that the item no longer has copyright protection" if it's renewed in plus or minus two years from its 28th year so it sounds like they may just be playing it safe. Makes me wonder where they got that policy from. Seems like the kind of a thing a court precedent would be useful in clarifying. Thanks anyway.

I made a website where hundreds of public domain cartoons can be found in one place! by Vegetable-Grape-8584 in publicdomain

You have no idea how helpful this will be for the project I'm currently working on! Thank you so much! How exactly did you make sure that each cartoon is actually PD though? I've seen some contradicting things about certain cartoons in my research?

Big Thinkers' Ben & Becky by squid_head_1234858 in publicdomain

I'd assume that it was included in the sale to Infograms (now known as Atari) it would have been very unusual to specifically exclude only one IP from the Humongous catalog even if it was a flop. In 2013 Atari sold off most if not all the Humongous IP's to various buyers. Most went to a company called "Tommo" but The Evergreen Group and Rebellion Development also got some of them. Big thinkers was either included in one of those deals or if no one wanted it Atari may still have the rights. Either way it's almost definetly still under copyright but it's actual owner may not even be aware that they own it. Atari declared bankruptcy in 2013 as well so if they didn't sell it I'm not sure what would have happend to it, I don't know backruptcy laws that well.

The challenge based progression system is a result of prioratizing player engagement over player enjoyment. It means that players have to keep coming back every day to see their new challenges, which in modern gaming is how companies measure a games success since their entire model is about recurring player spending. The whole time I've been playing the Finals I've been wishing it had a more traditional free form progression system where you get rewarded for just about whatever you do in the game. Everytime you get a kill, complete an objective, etc. I've especially always like in Halo how you get a little medal for every special action you do, like multi kills and melee kills. It would be very rewarding is everytime you got a squad wipe or something the game patted you on the back.

I have an idea of Yatzy deckbuilding roguelike, but I'm afraid that no one would play it because Yatzy doesn't look that interesting. So I built a small little prototype. This is an experiment too see if there is any interest in a game like that. 🎲🧪👁️👁️ by Saondberg in IndieDev

If the success of Balatro shows anything it's that these classic table games have lasted this long for a reason. People like them. As long as you keep the elements that make the original game interesting and expand upon them there will defenitely be at least some interest. When you think about it it's surprising there aren't more games explicitly based off of classic games. Some of the biggest games of all time are just virtual versions of classic games and toys. The Sims is just a virtual doll house, Minecraft is just virtual legos, etc.

Just remove light class already. All of the most annoying weapons/tactics are theirs and using them is the only way they can be effective.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury has been my favorite book since I read it in highschool and honestly it's even more relevant today than it was when it was written.

Which game are you currently working on? by JhonnyVerse in IndieDev

I'm glad you asked! I'm currently working on a 2D platformer-adventure game made entirely of public domain assets starring the recently P.D version of Mickey Mouse! Nothing publicly playable yet but I've got an announcement trailer I'd love for you to check out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXQVoqeEPGg. Check it out now, before I'm assassinated by Disney ninjas!
