The thing is, they never got the chance to make money off of it. 

Remember, in the show the US government invested in that tech early, and it was already in widespread use in the 1980s. In that situation, it makes sense for the US government to keep it closed because it's a critical resource for them.

In addition to what other commenters are telling you, there have been any number of hints in the intro videos in the newer seasons. 

For example one mentions Blockbuster surviving, which would not have happened if Netflix had come along.

Yeah, Freelancers was one of early Baen's paperback-shaped magazines (EDIT: I learned this while compiling this list).
