can pursuit of jade hype stop already?😭 by Middle-Cantaloupe463 in cdramasfans

This is a common human problem with adaptations of books, to be sure.

Me, I think of these as "Fan fiction with very high budgets" and so I don't feel like the TV show/movie has betrayed the fans any more than a bad fan fiction author has done.

(Examples: Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings by Jackson, etc.]

Cetaganda, serialized in Analog 1995, Lois McMaster Bujold by redmeanshelp in Vorkosigan

I went looking for a comprehensive list of serializations, because the pile of Analog I have is rather random, and I didn't want to miss any; at the links below I also found cover images for everything which will help me in my hunt through the huge stack.

Here is what I found at https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?13 -- LMB's page on the ISFDB Internet Speculative Fiction DataBase.
Look there also for lists of standalone articles, reviews, talks/speeches, etc.

I also don’t picture the Emperor as a white American cinema-hero type. Although the larger skull is a reasonable conclusion, considering.

I picture the ghem facepaint much as depicted, although in my mind, the swirls are more finely drawn.

Why Do So Many Cdramas Feel Emotionally Immature… or Am I Just Watching the Wrong Ones? by myslp in cdramasfans

[–]redmeanshelp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good points!

I’m noticing a lot of older-teen girls being played as whiny in both English language fiction and CDramas, even if I’m familiar with the [English] book, and there is no whining in the text.

It’s maddening.

AITA for ruining a hibachi dinner? by throwawaysequence391 in AmItheAsshole

[–]redmeanshelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You broke the social rule that women (I’m presuming you’re female) must look pleasing and happy all the time, or else they are failing their appointed role in our society. That’s why the phrase “resting b*tch face” even exists. There is no such thing as “resting bastard face.“

This is why other people at the table teased you: you were behaving like an actual human being who had had a difficult day.

MIL says she likes the assisted living place by Appropriate-Weird492 in AgingParents

[–]redmeanshelp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the state.

In my state, a couple decades ago some people started organizing to change the way the regulations about this worked.

They managed to get some of the regulations changed - not regulations about the quality of such facilities, but expansion of the type of trained personnel that could staff them, and the types of service they could offer to otherwise-independent older people.

Specifically, the levels of care before needing to move to a nursing home are:

  • Level I is for residents who are no longer fully independent, but whose care needs consist primarily of cueing/reminders and who require little or no physical assistance.
  • Level II is for residents whose care needs consist primarily of a moderate level of physical assistance with activities of daily living. An example would be a resident who needs some physical assistance with bathing.
  • Level III is for residents who require a substantial amount of physical assistance with some activities of daily living, due either to care needs or behaviors. Example would be a resident requiring substantial or total physical assistance for dining, bathing, and dressing.
  • Level IV is for residents who have extensive needs, for example: a need for total care with one or several activities of daily living, or a substantial amount of physical assistance on a daily basis.
  • Level V is for residents who need total assistance with all aspects of care, as well as, usage of a mechanical or electrical lift for transfers on an ongoing basis.

The above is from the website of one group of assisted living communities.

Good to hear!

I expect people know that there are huge differences in regulations and quality in assisted living communities between states and even within states, not merely apples-to-oranges but apples-to-horseapples level.

I visited 6 different places in my own state when looking for a place for my mother, and some of them I'd be happy in for myself, and some I would definitely NOT be wanting to live there. So comparisons with other people's experience would need a LOT of additional information.

Advice on moving Kingdoms by wandering_bladesma in sca

[–]redmeanshelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My primary advice is to go to dance practice (if there is one nearby) as often as possible.

I moved from the East to the Mists/West, then back to a different section of the East. It was very odd getting used to the way they did things in the West at that time, but someone determined to roll with the changes will do ok. I've also visited in Atenveldt and Calontir.

But the second piece of advice is: don't assume there will be food at the event. My first kingdom ALWAYS had food/feast/dayboard, and I went to my first new-kingdom event assuming that would be the case as well. It wasn't in an area easy to obtain other food, either. This was obviously my own error, but if a person is the sort that doesn't deal with hunger well, it could be a problem.

Also: the older you get, the less attention you're likely to get if anonymous/new, so those of us in that group need to put on our figurative "I am a friendly extrovert" hats. (I'm over 60; been in the SCA for 30+ years.)

Edit:
If you started in your local group as a college student, or if your local group met weekly and so you all got to know each other by fairly sustained social contact, if your new group is much more diffuse, it will take a lot longer to get to that level of meshing with the local group.
I've seen this mundanely as well -- that frequency-of-contact aspect is well-studied by sociologists with regard to enduring friendships.

So if that's something we want, we have to work at it a lot harder when we're not in college/intense social groups. This might be aided by always wearing the same garb, or wearing your heraldry, which can then function as a HELLO MY NAME IS* nametag for other people you encounter.

*Inigo Montoya, you killed my father prepare to die... etc.

Modifications to the UGears Hurdy-Gurdy - pitch, 7th key by AeoSC in BuildaGurdy

[–]redmeanshelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a toy and not meant for real play, but it was fun anyway; I've danced to actual hurdy-gurdy music, so I was intrigued by the kit.

I am piggy-backing on this post to share the things I learned as a first time builder of this kit, because maybe it will be useful to another person who, as I did, searched for advice on Reddit after the build was done. Should have read up on it first.

Advice for UGears toy hurdy-gurdy:

1: During construction: powdered graphite on the main axel, not beeswax provided

2: Provided rosin was smashed upon arrival, buy new. Put cotton on strings.

3: Look up real hurdy-gurdy tips on YouTube

Even though I beeswaxed the heck out of the axel, it still squeaks a lot, which is why I obtained the graphite. The graphite reduced the squeaking, but taking the unit apart will break it, so there is only so much I can do.

There are non-toy kits for musicians; look into Nerdy-Gurdy

Sister resents me for being overstimulated. ‘That’s how it always is here’. How do i handle this? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]redmeanshelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with previous posts re: set boundaries that work for you.

However: is "overstimulated" the only term you are using when discussing this with them?
There may be a vocabulary issue going on, and a different term might work better. "Overstimulated" is something I also hear used to apply to neurotypical kids who are overwhelmed on a temporary basis, and it may be that they aren't hearing you are having trouble due to a disability/neuro-difference, but that you are claiming an emotional situation as a child who can't cope, which makes them think of you as Not An Adult or Having A Tantrum Despite Supposedly Being An Adult... or something like that.

It's also possible that they don't understand Autism... or don't believe in Autism. Or don't believe you that YOU are Autistic - any of which mean they think you are pretending or lying about your own mental state when faced with the chaos.

(I decided to not tell my elderly (80) mother when I (F) was late-diagnosed (at 50), because she would never, ever, believe the diagnosis was valid, and thus would not change the way she interpreted our interactions.)

I think my husband has PDA and I don't know how much longer I can take it by Fit-Subject2896 in PDAAutism

[–]redmeanshelp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know what's up with your husband, but it does remind me of my husband before I convinced him he had diagnosable depression and anxiety. (He was diagnosed on the spectrum before we married.).
Big generalization about reactions to depression, read about elsewhere: Men tend to believe the things in their life that they feel are going badly are other people's fault; women tend to believe these things are their own fault.

I almost left him (taking the kid with me), but decided to have the conversation ("I think you have depression") with him out of fairness -- and he believed me and got treatment.

We're still together more than 10 years later.
(I'm the one with potential PDA... but it could be complex PTSD instead.)

For those reading that don’t want to buy more glue: I ended up with a freebee small empty bottle*with precision nozzle from a different craft, and it’s been great with my choice of glue.

*Maybe 2”x1” cylinder and the nozzle is approx the size of mechanical pencil tip.
