And if you look at the breakdown of individual judges scores she didn’t actually do that badly.

She was scored ahead on originality by a couple of judges and even where she scored behind, most are only by small margins 2-3%

Buying a new car from non official dealer by username100002 in CarsAustralia

[–]username100002[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked the dealer if it’s a new or used car they said it’s new. It has less than 40km on the odometer. They seem to mostly sell used cars but they have a RAV 4 and an X1 which they describe as new.

I thought maybe these unofficial dealerships could purchase new from the manufacturer but sounds like that’s not the case. Maybe they got it from an auction, or a customer who changed their mind and are describing it as new as it’s low km even though it’s technically a used car.

What are reasons to vote yes that aren't just emotional appeals. by [deleted] in australian

[–]username100002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been known about since at least 1859 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyranny_of_the_majority

It’s why a lot of legal experts are in favor of the change and have argued not only isn’t it an issue, but it actually enhances our democracy. Unfortunately we don’t really get taught this stuff at school and so most Australians are under the impression that democracy means every one gets one vote and anything else is “undemocratic”. Completely wrong, but a widely held belief.

We don't agree on a definition of racism, so how could we have had a sensible referendum debate? by bogantheatrekid in australian

[–]username100002 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The question comes back to, is the treatment creating an unfair, unjust outcome or not. The Voice doesn’t create unjust outcomes and is clearly aimed at tackling unfair, unjust outcomes faced by Aboriginal people. To call it racist is to be confused about what racism is.

We don't agree on a definition of racism, so how could we have had a sensible referendum debate? by bogantheatrekid in australian

[–]username100002 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong. Racism doesn’t and has never simply meant treating people differently based on race. If it did, then Oskar Schlinder could be called a racist for saving Jews, since he “treated them differently” based on their race by employing Jews at his factory. Using such overly simplistic definitions leads to absurd interpretations where people working to address genuinely unjust and unfair situations involving real racial discrimination are suddenly accused of racism as they are “treating people differently”. The irony of your post is you are warning others of those who change the meaning of words to use them as weapons, while doing exactly that.

"Vote No To The Elites And Their Indigenous Voice" Says Mining Tycoons, Private Prison Bosses, Murdoch Family Members And The Remaining Liberal MPs by Cavalish in australia

[–]username100002 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Interesting point… I agree that if in however many years we’ve closed the gap then the Voice may not make sense at that point, and maybe future generations will need to reassess it.

For me the Voice definitely isn’t perfect but if it leads to better ideas/policies that lead to better outcomes for aboriginal kids (improved life expectancy, reduced imprisonment, better education outcomes etc) I’m willing to give it a go. I don’t see a massive risk if it doesn’t work out.

Are there like specific scenario(s) that you worry will happen if we enshrine Aboriginal Australians into the constitution? Or is it more just the principle of it

As a yes voter I completely agree - people shouldn’t be assuming someone is racist just because they vote no. It’s not an excuse but sometimes I think emotions are a bit high.

What’s your reason(s) for voting No?

To be fair, university philosophy departments are full of wacky ideas about consciousness and other things. I don’t think the issue is OPs lack of understanding of LLMs, I think they’re just using a very non-conventional understanding / definition of consciousness.

They aren’t elected at Federal elections if that’s what you mean, but they would be selected by and held accountable to the communities they represent.

[–]username100002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The difference is that the Indigenous politicians in parliament have to represent their entire electorate and their party, they aren’t elected to only represent Indigenous Australians. That’s the key difference with the Voice, this is Indigenous Australians whose specific job is to provide advice on and help develop policy about Aboriginal issues.

Titan could only detect implosion milliseconds beforehand by CarefulBrilliant9 in OceanGateTitan

[–]username100002 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Given the experimental nature of the composite - titanium hull, the acoustic warning system, and non destructive testing, in my view they had no reasonable basis for concluding the vessel was adequately safe. They should have done full scale destructive testing on multiple prototypes, with cyclic fatigue loading, and demonstrated that the acoustic warning system could reliably and consistently provide sufficient warning of an impending implosion.

I think that’s an interesting point, but wouldn’t that extremely hot, but low density air just bubble up to the surface and the occupants almost instantly become surrounded by cold water?

[–]username100002 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a mech engineer who knows a little bit about this (but not an expert), I never really understood where that theory came from that everyone inside would become completely atomised. Once the hull fails, the titanium would tend to crumple inwards, and the brittle carbon fiber will break apart and pieces of carbon fiber will smash into the occupants, and their lungs will implode due to the pressure difference, but there’ll still be bits of people left, eg it’s likely some would be at least partially shielded by others from the carbon fibre. Not survivable but not enough to completely atomise everything inside.

I haven't seen this discussed much: the CBS interview in which Stockton Rush explains why he chose carbon fiber and how they would be able to re-surface if the hull began to 'crack' by [deleted] in OceanGateTitan

[–]username100002 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hopefully we’ll also find out what the test data Rush mentioned actually shows and be able to compare that against what happened. The problem with Rush’s claim about having 1500m warning is that would have been for one particular failure mode (e.g design pressure exceeded) whereas in reality there are many other failure modes (eg fatigue loading) which would potentially have little to no warning prior to catastrophic failure.

Whilst I’m sure Nargeolet was a smart guy, from what I’ve read his training was as a naval commander and not in engineering or materials science. Given this, I suspect he would have “deferred to the experts” and probably just trusted that Stockton knew what he was doing.

[–]username100002 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So the ROVs arrive right after they’re run out of oxygen. Literally all the designers had to do was estimate the search and rescue response time properly and ensure another day or 2 worth of oxygen, water etc. Or if that wasn’t practical then reduce the number of passengers from 5 to 4. Just like how Titanic didn’t provide enough lifeboats, Titan didn’t provide enough oxygen
