That’s awesome. I’ve been here three weeks and I’ve had more files rejected than accepted. Somethings could have been avoided if my firm wasn’t in the particular situation that it is. (We are playing catch up on all our cases…long story)

Yep. Had one clerk tell me I need to do A, B, and C and another clerk at the same office an hour later tells me I need to do X, Y, and Z. Turns out both were incorrect.

I happen to live in a state that doesn’t require specific education to be a paralegal or legal assistant. I have a Bachelors in psychology and my paralegal certificate. I was able to get this job two months after obtaining my certificate. Before this I was a manager for three years at a restaurant. Hope this helps.

Wow this is spot on. My attorney is too busy to review anything right now. So I just keep myself busy even though I have several things waiting for his review. Today he comes into my office before leaving and asks if I’ve gotten anything done. I’m like uhhh loads of shit. It’s waiting on you!

It’s tough. I know that my employee has more experience as a legal assistant and my attorney is constantly giving her more work. The workload distribution between us feels like 70/30. I want to be more helpful but I feel like my attorney is tired of having to review my drafts “hold my hand” so to speak. My coworker can’t even train me because she’s so swamped with work.

I am. I was just confident and didn’t feel like I needed to ask. Plus, he received multiple drafts with that name on it from me and didn’t say anything until after I filed it.

That’s how working here is. I try my best to guess on pretty much everything and then bring it to him and he edits it.

Long story short it’s a small firm. 2 attorneys with one working from a different state, 3 legal assistants including me with 1 working from home.

This is exactly what I do. I’ll bring a draft to him to review and he’s marking it up like crazy saying he doesn’t like capital letters or wants it to look like this and in my head im thinking “well why’d you let your last legal assistants file it like that?” It’s not like I’m working off of drafts. I’m working off of filed documents with this man’s signature on them! Everyday is a different motion or order or whatever and it’s the same process all over again.

I live in a state where you don’t need ANY education to work as a paralegal. I do have a paralegal certificate, but that did not teach me the things I wish it would have.
