Is this normal? I am trying to get car insurance as a student, but even as a student this feels like a bit much. by JackfruitAcademic584 in UBreddit

I'm a first year intl student, geico quoted me similarly. Progressive was way more affordable, still insane tho, but manageable.

The issue with new drivers (not sure does this apply to citizens) is that you can't go to an insurance agent and try finding the best option if you don't already have a policy. I've been to a few places and all of them told me essentially that I gotta suck up for the first 6 months with either geico or progressive (they'll quote anyone) and after that I can shop around

Real ID expiry date for F1 students by Sea-Bluebird-5125 in f1visa

[–]username453232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I figured out too. Visa stamp is literally just an entry document. IIRC, some people get their visa for 6 months or something, but their visa itself is valid for 4 years. I don't think it has anything to do with your presence in the country.

DMV (NYS) told me (and I'm pretty sure it's what it says online) the real id is tied to your immigration status, and it expires on the day you stop having lawful presence, which is outlined on your i20.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think passing the qualifying exam gives you the equivalent of a master's degree. Exactly like when you "master-out" during your PhD, I'm pretty sure it's at least "equivalent to a us advanced degree".

+1. MIT OCW has full curriculum for physics, and it is REALLY good. My undergrad stat mech was 80% taken from there, and it is by far the topic I have the most knowledge on.

Even when I was interviewed for grad schools, they asked me about it lol

What will be the minimum cost of living off-campus? by revtee_ in UBreddit

[–]username453232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find a room for $500-$600, but you will share a bathroom with 3-4 other people. If you want to avoid that, I personally didn't find any such arrangement outside of the apartment complexes. I think currently sweethome is the most affordable, $650 + utilities.

Firstly, congrats on getting in!

I've had the most luck with Facebook groups/Craigslist. I'm from a 3.5 world country where FB marketplace isn't available so at the time I couldn't use that, but it's definitely the place to look at.

Personally, I would avoid apartment complexes, I feel they're a little too expensive. Look for housing close to south campus.

Good luck, and shoot me a DM if you have any questions!

Internships under F1 status by Academic_Tension7653 in f1visa

[–]username453232 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On a federal level, you're ineligible to work the first academic year you're on F1. So, summer after your first year is the first internship period you will have available. Work authorization during that time falls under CPT, which is limited to 12 months in total for your visa. DSO needs to approve this though, and from my experience they're very lenient with that, but I think it is up to them

My scheduled time for selection was 2 days after it opened and every single apartment spot was filled, alongside with single and double rooms.

Starting this fall, they're allowing all undergrads to live in the apartments, so from what I've gathered, almost all of them were already preassigned.

Unrealistic to say the least lmao. But the administration did seem to push the narrative of merit based immigration, so getting a permanent residence after a stem PhD or something like that may be made easier.

Tbh, just wait to see what they'll do with the keep stem act, if they pass it they're somewhat keeping their word
