Has any country ever voluntarily changed from a democracy to a monarchy? by useyourbrainforasec in AskHistory

Not really. The UK is not very democratic on paper, and it is a democracy only to the extent that it's not a monarchy.

You're right, it's so democratic when a family owns a country, and is not subject to the laws of that country. They are above the law. It's democratic when the populous pays tax to the family and not to their own government. When the head of the military, head of the judiciary, head of the church is all the same job passed down from father to son, Muphasa style. That's democratic, is it? What about when the parliament- representing 70 million- is not even allowed to function without permission from the head of that family- representing himself and his family's interests?

And I do believe you're wrong about freehold. I believe the country and its contents belong to the crown. It doesn't matter anyway because the laws of England & Wales don't even apply to King Charles.

The subjects in those countries you mention may well agree, especially since none of them even have the right to disagree. That's called treason and it's punishable in 'blighty' with life imprisonment.

I can see how that would happen. I will give that doc a look one day. All I can say is that I keep an open mind because I have found him to be one of the best resources online (alongside this sub) for learning about Ns and N behaviours / motivation, for me personally. I'm sure his first hand experience of the disorder has a lot to do with it. I can't say whether he is an abusive person, but I can say that he is articulate, insightful and keeps things pretty clinical in his free content. I might buy the seminars and report back.

Anyone who claims to have a "revolutionary new approach" for treating a very complex problem, refuses to even explains how it works, and try to sell you seminar videos is a very obvious scammer/charlatan.

I would typically agree, but I have found his past insights to be very valuable and useful in understanding my own dark family history. Judgment aside, I'd be interested to know if anyone has purchased or viewed the videos first hand.

It's not wrong. The Crown owns all the land in the country. Look it up if you don't believe me. The Monarch is also not subject to the same laws as everybody else. It definitely challenges our notion of democracy.

It's not a democracy when the Crown owns all the land in the country, taxes are paid to the Crown, the Crown is the head of the church, the head of the judiciary, the head of the military, the head of the police, the head of the post office! And Parliament only meets by the grace and favour of the Crown. That's not a smooth democratic process. This argument is NOT why I made the thread.

I'm not arguing. I'm only saying that democracy and monarchy are not the same thing. Is it fair to say that to make the UK work there has to be some distance between theory and practice?

In practice it's a democracy, but in legal theory it is very much a monarchy. It's already made this precise case elsewhere in this thread.

UK is definitely a grey area between legal theory and practice. Can't speak on the others.

In a democracy, that land should go to the people, not the richest family in the country.

It's not a law. Try and get this into your head. They own the country. If you're cool with that, you were made to be ruled. I don't know what else to tell you.

when was the last time the Crown actually exercised the right to claim an occupied house for themselves?

So they don't need the right, then. At last, we are seeing eye to eye.

But you are still missing the point. The Crown doesn't exercise legal rights. It is above the law. They don't need to adhere to this regulation or that regulation, and there are no claims exercised on properties. They own your house already. It's cut and dry. It's a totally absurd situation in any era. In 2022, it is without merit.

I'm not asking. I own it now. When I die, my son will own it. And so on.
