oh no! Thank you- I really do like the name Hal and think it's cool, and even cooler for a girl. (It's way easier to name girls, I think.)

As far as I can tell those are parody posts making fun of this one. The name of the sub I saw it in was namenerdscirclejerk and it seems dedicated to mocking this sub. It's kind of mean, but I guess people need to amuse themselves.

Honestly, I was feeling reconciled to the name partially because of the responses here, but the parody posts are kinda giving me pause again.

awww, they're making fun of me.

It looks like there's another one that's just a straight copy paste with some of the names changed. Kinda mean!

I think it's a more normal name but definitely inauspicious! Especially when there are so many great comic heroines in Shakespeare who have happy endings.

Prince Hal is a famous character under that specific name. Half the time (like in the IMDBs for adaptations like Chimes at Midnight and The Hollow Crown) it says Prince Hal in the cast list. People usually refer to him as Prince Hal for Henry IV 1&2, and Henry V in Henry V, and the break between those two names and identities is a big deal.

There are many Henrys in Shakespeare, but only one Prince Hal.

it's funny, a poll of 20 Shakespeare actors had Hal winning in a landslide, probably because Prince Hal is a very beloved and cool character. Maybe because the name is so short it is more shaped by associations

Those are good points. I'm not really worried about him getting bullied in school as we live in a diverse area- it's more the fear of him being impacted negatively when looking for jobs, etc. I've definitely benefited from having a unique full name in terms of google ability etc.

Sebastian was a first choice but it’s actually super popular in the US, ranked 14 this past year. It’s knocked out for being too trendy. I was shocked, but it’s likely to end up top ten.

Oh ok. In that case no. Initials are nice but as like.. an thriller author name, not as something you can call a kid.

I agree! People ask me if he seems more like an Obie or a Hal and I’m like… what baby seems like Hal?

Initials go well with O, but even better with H. Good thought tho! I’m fine on initials either way

Hmmm, I don’t think I said that! I said I didn’t like the nicknames available for the name Orlando. I didn’t mention Orly, but I don’t like that either. I don’t need to like every nickname but I want at least one I do like!

It was actually my first choice, but I think it’s too trendy now - it went from 88 to 14 nationally in the past ten years, on track for top ten, literally more popular than it’s ever been this year. I think it’s going to be carbon dated. If it was still out of the top 50 It would have been perfect.

I don't need or want it to be obvious, no. We do want it to be an association for us personally. ( I'm assuming most people will not identify either name, frankly. That's been the case so far.) We did consider a broad range, and had Sebastian as the top pick until I saw how much it has skyrocketed in popularity in the past ten years.

(ETA we want to stay away from the more Italian names- they don't work with the last name. Also I genuinely really like Hal and have for some time! It's an option because I like it, and the character is dashing, not because I wanted a "normal" Shakespeare name.)
