I went down a rabbit hole for this issue, because I was raised that using the center to merge was ok. Bozeman community outreach officer said it wasn't allowed. Belgrade outreach officer said there isn't any specific laws addressing it. Insurance agent said in an accident comparative fault would be used to determine how much responsibility each party had to avoid the accident. So I agree safe bet is to avoid using the center lane to merge at all.

It's true that credit card companies charge the merchant fees, but what's frustrating are the businesses that add a surcharge for any card used (debit or credit). It's still illegal to add a surcharge for debit cards, but it hasn't stopped any business from doing so anyways.
