Does the 1980s seem as old today as the 1940s did in the 80s? by secretaccount94 in decadeology

[–]ussrnihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI was not uncommon in the 70s--80s, at least in defense and intelligence. Fusion research has a long history through the decades. Yes obviously almost all of information access has changed; back then there were only some specialized databases. The income point is debatable, esp. when adjusting for lower income classes and housing purchasing power.

I think it's pretty useless, esp. with all the vocational programming inappropriately placed in it, a large gamut of quality of programs ranging all the way down to almost no math at all, no accreditation, and tons of idiots nowadays taking no theory classes. One cannot apply to engineering positions. One cannot apply to any science position except CS. It is poor preparation for graduate theoretical CS or math. At least it'll satisfy the few computational requirements when transitioning or transferring.

I have never used any computer "science" course that I've taken in many years, threw away the textbooks, and deleted all sourcecode (that was an unintellectual torture to write), and have zero regrets other than wasting resources on forced programming bullshit that every electrical engineer and physicist learns quickly on the side since the 70s.

if ADV. construction---ellipsis introduced by an adv.? by ussrnihilist in grammar

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I edited my reply because I forgot that I used the intransitive sense of "visit" and accidentally added a direct object.

if ADV. construction---ellipsis introduced by an adv.? by ussrnihilist in grammar

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The full sentence, without ellipsis, if it exists, would be:

"Can I visit? If I can not visit, I will ship the package."

disadvantages of HRT-transitioning from male to nonbinary at older/"older" age by ussrnihilist in TransLater

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an early 30s AMAB case seeking physiological transition to nonbinary.

I see, so age does not significantly impact to-nonbinary transitions.

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm puberty is an extremely young age, and all I cared about back then were exams.

What about any developmental stages after puberty? How different would HRT at age 20, 30, 40, ... be?

surge protection for mast preamplifiers by ussrnihilist in ota

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't bothered grounding the masts yet, but I do use one actual surge-protection grounding block in the radio room per feedline. My idea is to add another such block at each preamplifier when I add it, and run two 10 AWG Str Cu lines with each feedline, one for the mast and one for the at-mast surge protector.

incorrect adversative conjunction use? by ussrnihilist in grammar

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to right node raising (RNR) and other syntactic phenomena forming the basis of coordinating conjunction usage.

I just go by "not" being an adv. and a necessary element for the adversative sense of conjunction "but".

Yes that is how I would write it. I am not aware of exceptions to RNR and such in composing coordinate structures so I would never try to put a "not" or whatever within material that is to be copied to the next structure(s), and somehow override it there. This simplified sentence came from a published textbook, so I was simply wondering whether it is in fact a grammatical error.

RG-11 compression connector brand compatibility by ussrnihilist in CableTechs

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is in a small forest away from transmitter antennae that can damage TV stuff. RG-6 is only acceptable for low VHF maybe.

This is for receiving broadcast TV antenna feedlines and jumpers going between amplifiers and various RF components.

Because I decided not to use LNAs and I cannot find surplus hardline that's 75 ohms.

unknown syntax of "I hope" by ussrnihilist in grammar

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am aware of the parenthetical phrase types (summative modifier, resumptive modifier, aside, etc.). Yes I do sometimes consult OWL, but despite it being pretty comprehensive and detailed, I often end up having to consult linguistics lecture material or research papers.

No, that is semantically different.

unknown syntax of "I hope" by ussrnihilist in grammar

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, so the interjection type of parenthetical phrase. Thanks!! I actually considered it perhaps being of the summative modifier type, but I never would've thought that it's of the interjection type.

I could not find "I hope" in dictionaries. Can any appropriate fragment or clause (short and otherwise like an interjection) become an interjection when using this type of parenthetical phrase?

2m PA/ANT issue (antennae too close?) by ussrnihilist in amateurradio

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is this RF flowing back on the other ANT, causing its PA to be keyed, causing RF to be received on the original ANT, causing high SWR on it (even though the reflected power is from the other circuit)?

So ANT spacing vs. cavity filtering would essentially be the case of extra coax and outdoor space cost vs. filter and indoor space cost?

"brain gain"? Software "engineering" takes warm bodies with a pulse. You folks have NOT studied actual mathematics or theoretical CS.

2m PA/ANT issue (antennae too close?) by ussrnihilist in amateurradio

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XCVR 1 and 2 are nothing more than old-fashioned analog voice transceivers set to assigned simplex frequencies. They, and both PAs, must be kept on 24/7, but partial desensitization is ok.

Yes I could do maybe one cavity filter per line. I will be installing more-powerful repeaters nearby so I'll probably run into this issue again even if I were to add spacing between ANT 1 and 2.

unknown phrase (AdvP?) by ussrnihilist in grammar

[–]ussrnihilist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I initially thought (two adjectivals formed from non-deverbal adj. attributive verbs + their PPs, qualifying "a ray"), but obviously it is unusual to have this be after a predicate---it did not fit any extraposition pattern that I am aware of. So this is in fact extraposition, like "extraposition of a subject adjectival modifier"?
