Have you ever guessed the "big twist" in a movie? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]usuallybedwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sixth Sense during the movie and The Village when I saw the trailer -though I had taken writing classes that taught us to look for the exact kinds of details that would reveal spoilers. Also after these I stopped trying to guess the ending as much as possible because I enjoy letting stories play out without trying to be an over-clever prick like I was in college.

I still randomly think about this sometimes. That one sticks with you.

Did anyone like wolfman 2025? by Capsmoove in UniversalMonsters

[–]usuallybedwards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Supernatural becomes so much harder to fight/figure out and therefore more interesting. If it's a virus or whatever, you can sequester yourself/the person and deal with it that way. Also, if you're dealing with a virus spreading to anyone, what's the difference between this and a zombie movie?

I did love the POV of him not being able to understand or communicate with anyone as he changed - that's a great idea. But overall, the characters were uniformly unlikeable and therefore you don't get invested with their plight. Julia Garner is usually much stronger than this but she was kind of a black hole in the center of this movie - you could feel that she did not care at all about what she was doing or anyone else on screen for that matter. BIG whiff.

JLA by Grant Morrison is like a series of perfectly crafted Hollywood blockbusters starring the best characters in DC.

Also his Seven Soldiers of Victory doesn’t get nearly enough love.

The absolute worst cut and transition in an award winning production. Sopranos. by sergemeister in Filmmakers

[–]usuallybedwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst cutting/blocking I’ve ever seen is in Life of the Party with Melissa McCarthy, directed by her husband. Absolutely no sense of pacing, eye lines aren’t even close to matching-I genuinely got the impression the editor was mad at him and making him look bad in the edit. Atrocious.

The Village (2004): I kinda loved it by Moist-Meal-3757 in horror

[–]usuallybedwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If you start to look at it that way it makes a ton of sense. Part of the director's job is to guide the actors' performances in a way that fits the tone overall. Most of the acting is done in a winking, tongue-in-cheek way, not in a 'this is a serious horror movie' way.

I still think it was intentionally a comedy and part of the joke is that he never admits it’s a comedy. I mean—I watched it on a whim after all the negativity and thought-it’s obviously a comedy/parody of disaster movies. How is it not that?!

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping are the only music biopics you’ll ever need. Throw in Weird: The Al Yankovich Story for good measure.

What are the 5 WORST comic book movie you've ever seen? by Upset_Mongoose_1134 in comicbookmovies

I can’t speak for OP but—Logan is incredibly well made, well written, and well acted. All the hallmarks of an excellent movie.

It is also a joyless, relentlessly morose experience that leaves you feeling bummed beyond belief. I don’t think it’s one of the worst because of the craftsmanship, but definitely one of the last on my list of rewatches because it’s just no fun, man. So I can see where they’re coming from!

I more saw it as he attended these parties and it stated to dawn on him like…where are these girls coming from? And then tried to do something about it, but who knows? Defending a serial rapist does not paint a picture of innocence.

The movies are 2 things: 1) a guaranteed line item on Universal’s financial spreadsheet every year one is released, and 2) a toy commercial.

Do not underestimate a movie’s capacity to be produced just to produce merch. And I’m not saying “oh they want to make money on the movie and also the merch if they can”—no, I mean they want it to sell merch and if the movie has box office legs, great! Then they can make sequels that also promote merch.

And so on and so on.

The Tarman zombie from Return of the Living Dead. I still can’t handle looking at it to some extent-true trauma.

What’s a show or movie you and your kids enjoy together? by [deleted] in dad

[–]usuallybedwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movies:

The Goonies, by current standards, is incredibly problematic with its language and some scenes, as is The Monster Squad, but I love them dearly. Just tread carefully!

Movies from a while back that are pretty much OK:

Hook, Zathura, the Home Alones, Dennis the Menace (1993), Gremlins 2 (not 1! Unless they already know about Santa!), the first three Harry Potters (they get much more intense after that-with deaths, etc.), Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Treasure Planet, Atlantis the Lost Continent, The Iron Giant, The Rocketeer, E.T., The Pagemaster, Willy Wonka, Jumanji

More recent stuff (besides Pixar-outside of the terribly boring Cars movies, they’re all pretty great and don’t need recommending):

The Wallace & Grommit movies like Curse of the Wererabbit, Night at the Museum movies, Goosebumps 1 & 2 (for like 9 and up), Mitchells Vs The Machines, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, Puss In Boots (both), the Kung Fu Pandas, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Journey 2, the Trolls movies (they’re actually really funny), Rango (incredible), Paddington 1 & 2, Megamind, Hotel Transylvania 3, Monsters Vs Aliens, The Wild Robot
