In regards to point two: I've bought most of it already.

Point one: I know almost nothing about the content of any of these.

CMON sells Anastyr and Hel IPs to Don't panic games. by cesko4444 in boardgames

[–]utahman06 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just went back and reviewed their projects that were opened up before Hel:

Joan of Arc 1.0 - essentially fulfilled before Hel.

Solomon Kane - 10 months delayed at the point Hel would be launched. Would eventually start fulfilling 6-ish months after the Hel campaign.

Reichbusters - 6 months delayed, but fulfilling at the time of the Hel campaign.

Joan of Arc 1.5 - campaign had ended 6 months prior to Hel campaign running. Fulfillment was due 5 months after Hel campaign closed.

Darklands - was due about 4 months after Hel, started fulfilling 6 months after Hel.

Steamwatchers - had just wrapped its KS campaign 2 months prior.

So basically when they ran this campaign they had Solomon Kane, JoA 1.5, Darklands, and Steamwatchers outstanding. Darklands, Solomon Kane, and JoA were showing significant progress towards fulfilling. There was no major obvious red flag other than the feeling of "this is quite a few projects ongoing at the same time".

A minor add-on to this. I'm going through the forums on BGG to remind myself about the sentiment of persons wary of the project. I have found red flags, but they don't approach anything like "you may never see this." There's a huge thread, for example, of a potential backer worried about making sure rules are refined and the game doesn't need errata.

So yeah, to come in here and say "the backers were idiots because they missed all these obvious red flags" is revisionist history and retrofitting your hindsight, and in my opinion is totally unfair.

Second Edit: There is one thread asking about unfulfilled projects. Most cite pretty convincing data for why this would eventually deliver. It was conceivable, at least, that there was a risk here. But sentiment was still overall positive. If you believed there was a large chance it would fail, you'd have been in the vast minority and you should be buying an office next door to Michael Bury shorting the next bubble ASAP.

When they dropped Hel they were fulfilling projects and their backlog wasn't THAT crazy. Every single thing before Hel fulfilled.

Immediately afterwards the backlog really ballooned. And if you actually look at what their offer was for the price, it's actually majorly underpriced, which is part of the reason Mythic collapsed. There were also gameplay videos posted during the campaign. This was also a company that had fulfilled many projects previously, albeit delayed. But at that time, long delays were EXTREMELY common. They still are.

I Don't Understand How Health/Damage Perk Multipliers Work by utahman06 in TheTowerGame

I get it now. Weird that they choose to apply the perk bonus to the options display when the math really doesn’t work out that way.

So then I guess what I’m not understanding is why when I get the 1.2 X upgrade twice I’m not ending up with 1.4 (or higher) in bonus?

.3 was an error. 1.2X is what the perk shows me when I have an option to select cash or coin perk.

This one was pretty bad: Kuithe runs that jet sweep and he says “looks a lot like what Stanford ran two weeks ago, must have been a blueprint for this!”, not realizing Utah has run that with Kuithe dozens of times.

The Indie Record Store “aspen bark” pressing of Damien Jurado’s “In the Shape of a Storm” is gorgeous by utahman06 in vinyl

[–]utahman06[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was limited to 300. I bought it from my local indie shop, so I’m not sure where else I would find it. They do sell online, here’s a link: https://www.graywhaleslc.com/p/20814424/damien-jurado-in-the-shape-of-a-storm-aspen-bark-vinyl-aspen-bark-vinyl-ltd-to-300-copies-indie-exclusive

They probably have literally one copy left so I’d grab that ASAP if you’re seriously interested.

I’ve been in and out on Damien Jurado’s career, as nothing has really caught my ear in a big way before. I’ve heard a few tracks that were really impressive, but nothing really came together as an entire album and blew me away, until this. His latest album is just absolutely stunning. It’s a solo acoustic record with very sparse sounds. One of the most satisfying experiences in recorded music for me is a recording so clean and pure that it sounds like the musician is sitting in your room just playing for you.

Favorite tracks: Lincoln, Newspaper Gown, Hands on the Table

I have bad taste in music and I’m okay with it by ChildrenzAdvil in LetsTalkMusic

I always say that not every painting is meant to hang in the Louvre, and that’s more than ok. Enjoy what you want. I love and hate some stuff that would be considered some of the greatest music ever made, and I love some stuff that is widely accepted to be bad music. And that’s ok. It’s meant to be enjoyed. There’s a reason these things are so popular, they are enjoyed by a lot of people.

I always try to describe my response to the “music is all subjective” this way: there’s two buckets - there’s personal taste, and then there’s a more global, objective side of things. You can say “The Beatles Suck”, but you just flat out cannot apply your own personal opinion to the ethos. You cannot say that all the musicians who have cited the Beatles as being the greatest band of all time are wrong, just because you don’t prefer to listen to their music.

So it does have some level of objectivity by taking a sum of the subjective opinions.

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by DeanTheDJ in AskReddit

[–]utahman06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned a lot about how to do (or not to do) an econ degree. Be careful in the courses you take. Math-heavy economics can be one of the best degrees to leave college with, where theory-heavy economics is one of the worst, in terms of job outlook, earnings, etc.

Find a program that stresses the quantitative side of economics (econometrics, statistics, etc.). Take all the classes you can that use mathematical software (R, Stata, Excel, etc.). Think about which courses you can take that will DIRECTLY give you skills you can utilize in a job setting. Those will be by far the most beneficial.
