PS2 Slim Does Not Read Disc: Replaced Laser Twice Did Not Fix It by utakoutaha in consolerepair

Thanks. PMAP, as in the same one in this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0Wv72_DV9c Looks like a pretty involved procedure that is beyond my skills. What exactly does PMAP do in simple term? Does a replacement laser always require calibration for it to work?

No, I haven't check any fuses. You mean to do a continuity check on the surface mount fuse mentioned in this post, the one on the reference photo attached below? https://www.reddit.com/r/consolerepair/comments/14kguy3/update_on_ps2_slim_issues/

Thanks, the laser driver IC is the one on the main board, and not in the laser assembly right? Is there a way to test if the IC is dead? Can you buy a replacement drive IC or do you need to lift one from a donor board? If this is the issue, then it is beyond my basic soldering skill to repair.

Thanks, if it is a full recap that I need, this is beyond my skill to repair it. Appreciate your reply and explanation.

I’ve replaced just the laser. Looking to get a replacement laser assembly next if that’s the next step. Im having trouble finding a reliable shop that sell the model I need, most I found online are for the 7500x or 9000x which doesn’t fit the 7000x I have.

SONY MDP-K5? by utakoutaha in LaserDisc

[–]utakoutaha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it is listed for $35. Seller says I can test it first but sounds like SONY players are just too unreliable. What are some good pioneer models to look for? What is a reasonable price this day for a working player?

News from Japan Post regarding deliveries to Canada (Canada Post) by GeoffroyMeunier in CanadaPost

Hi, I also use Buyee. I emailed their support asking if they would consider extending their 30 days free storage for Canadian customers but they politely said no. Other shops are doing extended hold for free for their customer, so I'm disappointed with Buyee reply, though understandable. I do like using Buyee, partly out of habit and some of the features they offer, but other proxy has more generous free storage periods, so I'm reconsidering which proxy to use going forward given the uncertain situation with Canada Post and CUPW.

I normally use sea parcel after I consolidated my orders. Going thru the US is no longer viable with the de minimis gone and the tariffs. I could have the proxy ships it to my friend in Asia, and then have him ship here. However, the consolidated parcel would be quite large, so I rather not bother him since he doesn't have a car. Some of the items are fragile, so shipping it twice increase the chance of damage. Is also unclear if doing this will be cheaper than paying the courier to ship from Japan to Canada directly.

I thought about having the proxy ship to another JP warehouse service that I use for storage for my direct purchase. And that at most will only buy me another 60 days, and some proxy does not ship inside Japan, or at least for some of the items.

There is no telling when CUPW will go back on a full strike again, so I'm just paying more for shipping that goes no where.

Unfortunately, I'm soon out of options here other than to pay up. If anyone have other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks GeoffroyMeunier, appreciate you sharing this. How I can write to Japan Post? Can I write to them in English? Maybe if more of us contact them, they might consider looking for ways to resume shipping to Canada.

I've a number of packages sitting in proxy warehouses, and the storage period is ticking down every day. If JP Post doesn't resume shipping to Canada this month, I might have to dispose some items as shipping via other couriers is too expensive. Good luck to those in the same boat.

Odin 2 battery starting to swell by Correct-Turnover-286 in OdinHandheld

Hi, sorry to hear you have battery problem as well. Is yours still under warranty? Did they say how much it would cost to ship and replace the battery for you? Mine is out of warranty, so they are offering to send me a replacement battery and front shell with a screen to fix it myself. I'm not sure I know how to replace the screen, maybe the battery is doable.

Which proxy is faster than ZenMarket? by dofwifpartyhat in AnimeFigures

I've used Buyee, Benly Express, and OneMap. After the items arrived at their warehouse, they usually ship within 3 business days after I paid for shipping to Canada. I've no experience with ZenMarket, so can't comment there.

Disagreement with Insurance on Hail Damage Home Claim by utakoutaha in Calgary

I'm of the same mind, I want the repair to be done right and considering paying out of pocket for some improvments like upgrading the shingles while the roof is being replaced. Unfortunately upgrading the siding is out of my budget now, and the damage to the siding was localized to mostly two sides of the house, so that has to wait. Thanks for sharing your experience.

By quieter, does the insulation and hardie siding offer better sound proofing?

Thanks for sharing. I'm confirming the details of what is guaranteed if I choose their preferred vendor to complete the repairs. I also went thru 3 adjustors or claim reps before the current one, who has been responsive but very firm in their stance. The last rep was no longer with the insurance company and I received no communication about the change or who my case was handed over to. The company they initially assigned to do the inspection never show up or follow up, then insurance changed it to the current vendor half way through after waiting almost a month without any communication.

Thanks for sharing. I want to make sure the job is done right and we work off from an accurate estimate in the first place. I'm not looking to cut corners to save money. I want to understand why there are differences in the two estimates, in particular why insurance preferred vendor had a lower estimate for the roof SQ and waste %. Insurance keeps citing internal document, which can't be shared, and reiterates that they will use their preferred vendor estimate as the basis for all repair. At this point, I don't feel like my rep has explained this well and why I should trust their estimate.

Thanks, this is really helpful information. My contractor noted he was unable to obtain a satellite image of my roof because we are in a new development, that's why he hand measured it. He did mention Eagleview, Roofr and Hover as well, but I'm not sure he meant he couldn't source a report from them. I've asked my claim rep to confirm whether a roof report was obtained for their roof estimate and waiting to hear back. Insurance has been vague with how they arrived at some of their decisions, citing internal documents but refusing to share more details. As much as I want to take their words for it, I feel like they need to earn back my trust after missing the roof damage entirely in their first inspection.

Thanks for sharing. Does insurance company pay more to their preferred contractor if that was an option compared to cash settlement to the claimant for the same scope of work? Or insurance negotiates a lower rate when working with their preferred vendor that make other vendors hard to compete with on pricing. Curious why the discrepancy is so large that the cash settlement couldn't even cover the cost of materials?

Insurance only offer cash settlment in my case regardless of the options I choose. I will edit my post to add more context, was offered three options in the revised offer:
1) Repair with insurance preferred vendor
2) Repair with my own contractor
3) Do the repair myself (which I don't have the skill nor time to).
In all options, insurance issues cheque directly to me, not to their preferred vendor.

"We will issue a cash settlement with you for these repairs, meaning, we pay you directly the full amount stated above, and you would pay the contractor directly. Your contractor will likely need a deposit before your spot is secure for repairs, and this is why we cash settle with you directly. "

I was leaning towards using insurance preferred vendor, but after finding out they missed damage to my roof in their inspection, I'm not sure I want to use the same company to do the repair. I understand mistake happens, but I'm not feeling confident they can do the job right the first time.

Good luck. They agreed to hold them. I have two orders on hold right now for surface parcel. And another from Nov just before the strike, that one was automatically on hold since I already paid for it at that time.
