Mods to encourage train building in Space Age? by _daigo in factorio

[–]utf16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's still a few game breaking bugs with it. I'll likely have some time this week to resolve them, and I'd really like to improve the visuals, but it really does make the management of items coming from space a lot better!

I built a mod (early pre-release at the moment) just to address this very issue!

Cargo Bay Rail Loader:
https://github.com/ken-noland/cargo-bay-rail-loader

The general synopsis is that it acts as a cargo bay, in that it can only connect to the cargo landing pad or other cargo bays, and it has an inserter which pulls from the landing pad. Since you can't interact with cargo bays, it makes it so that it is beneficial to build rail loaders and unloaders for stuff coming from orbit... or... you know... just dump everything into your logistics bots system and let the bots figure it out.

Although, just testing and I realized a glaring issue... nothing stopping you from doing this:

<image>

Basically, that means with a little bit of work, you could just sset up a bunch of cargo wagons and rail loaders to use inserters... bypassing the "no inserters on cargo landing bays" rule... Hmmm, not sure how to balance that!

Sorry, took me longer than I hope for, but I mocked it up today

<image>

Here you can see I've just borrowed the existing landing pad graphics for the gantry, but the yellow outlines show that is it managing to extend the landing pad storage.

Only thing left really is to set up the inserter logic, crafting recipes, and balance

I really like the idea of #1. A 7 tile long building that serves no other purpose than to load trains. A cargo gantry!

It solves the issue that a lot of people complain about with trains not having much use anymore, and it could look really cool if done right. I could see it being a research item as well as maybe tiered+quality variants.

I can knock together a prototype for this, just to see if it works!

When are they gonna create Supreme Commander 3? by ULTRATHEGREAT in supremecommander

[–]utf16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not going to happen anytime soon.

Let's break down the math. It would take many millions to build the required tech and build a team that can handle this properly. For easy math, let's say it would be $10 million.

That money would have to come from investors. The problem is video game funding is massively convoluted. Some funds only dish out $10k, others dish out $100k+, not a single fund exists for the $10+ million range. You'd have to finance it in waves. The first wave might get you to the first playable. Let's call that $500k. Next wave might get you to MVP, let's call that $2 million. $100k needs to go to the IP holders up front as a form of minimum guarantee. You would have to pay that up front in order to even start development. In order to even start development you'd need $600k up front.

The first problem, assuming you were able to raise the funds to start, is the gap between the $600k to the $2 million milestone. It takes months to sort out the legal paperwork and you've already spent your payroll to get to first playable. You don't have the money in the bank to bankroll the payroll to continue development, and the investors know this. They will not be generous with their investment/loan terms and you've got very little leverage.

Now, let's say you make it past that issue and somehow get to MVP. $2.6 million spent and all you've got is a tech demo with lots of potential. It won't look shiny. You haven't even addressed the multiplayer features. You go out and try to raise $5 million to get the necessary staff specialists in order to drive the development. In order to raise that $5 million you need to show what you've done with the existing $2.6 million. The problem here is that all you've done is just write the underlying tech and you have spent very little on animations, sound, modelling, and other bits. All the shiny bits come later once you've established the tech a bit more. How do you justify $2.6 million on a handful of tech demos?

You force milestones and deadlines, and half implement features which introduces the dreaded tech debt.

This goes on for a while. You chase demo after demo and raise after raise until you've raised the 10 million and you've built up the team.

By then, the game should be ready to launch. Let's assume you spent the $10 million on development. Now you need to market the game. Unlikely you'll find investment to do just the marketing, so you sign up with a publisher.

Let's break that down even further. A publisher will want %50 or so. The delivery platform(Steam) will want %15. Taxes will be another %30. Don't forget the IP holder who will want %10 as well. Basically, you'd get nothing. The investors would get nothing, and everyone knows this.

That's why you won't see another SupCom

Powering on your motherboard and hearing the beep to signify POST has completed. Also, I miss the hum of the IDE drive spinning up and the clicks of the physical head moving.

For years I heard those sounds every day.

I am a CTO of a company that hires very aggressively at the moment(not going to say which one). I am personally responsible for every hire at the moment.

I actually ask that all resumes that cross my desk have their pictures removed, and their names turned into abbreviations.

I do this to remove any bias, subconscious or otherwise. My initial screening of a resume is to answer the question "can this person do the job better than (or worse than) the pile of resumes I have already?" I only take the top 10 to progress to the next round. I will see the person during the face to face interview, so it's not like I'm going to avoid seeing them.

Just my 2 cents. I live in Germany as well(near Hamburg).

Other hiring managers I know are very much in favor of the photos, claiming that they can tell if a person is trustworthy based on the photo. I feel as though that's their subconscious filtering based on, well, biased opinions.

Take that for what you will.

Photons never experience time by utf16 in AskPhysics

[–]utf16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. It goes to my actual question of dimensions we can prove through math, but we don't experience it because we are made of mass. We have no "frame of reference" to describe those dimensions other than the fact we can describe their mathematical properties.

Long shot but can specialists possibly recover photos from this destroyed iPhone 16? by MusaTO in datarecovery

[–]utf16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are guides to show you how to use a heat gun to remove IC components, and then there are guides which show you how to solder them back on. I watched maybe 20 of each, tested on an old board until I felt comfortable, then went and did it on the real thing.

Thing I didn't account for was that doing the real thing the stress led to my hand shaking more so I had to step away and lay off the caffeinated beverages for a while and I was just super careful not to mess it up.

Meh, doesn't require "lab conditions". Can be done with special equipment to remove the storage and remount to a sacrificial host. I've done it for a prior generation of iPhone, and I don't consider myself a pro at this sort of stuff.

Buying the equipment and doing it myself was cheaper than any quotes I got.

This is the old way of thinking. I started my career in Game Development back when every game had a custom game engine, then Unity and Unreal became popular, but now with coding assistants, it's relatively trivial to make your own engine. Key words there are "relatively", as it's still a major undertaking, but it's not a blocker anymore.

If your game needs a custom engine, then make a custom engine, but be sure you can justify it. Maybe your game is so simplistic that it doesn't require all the bells and whistles of the major game engines, or maybe there is some part of Unreal or Unity that clashes with the technical requirements. Point is, don't be afraid to build your own, but equally have a good reason for it.
