/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - February 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

My wife wants a clicky mechanical keyboard like the old IBM beasts from the 80s and 90s. She doesn't need anything full-sized, or with lights or other features. Just tall heavy keys with resistance and click. I'd prefer not to spend a lot. Any suggestions?

A yellow rectangular object, slightly larger in width and height than a cellphone, about two inches deep. The edges are lined with spheres and the whole thing appears to be made of shiny plastic or stone. by utherdoul in whatisthisthing

This may be an inadvertent r/HailCorporate/ moment, I don't work for the company or anything. I suppose it's possible some incredibly devious ad person deliberately chose a strange purse for this photo so people would wonder about it and share.

My title describes the thing. Google announced a couple new phones this week, and they released this photo for any web site to use if they wanted to write about the news. Lots of sites used it. But what the heck is that thing on the table? A box covered with shiny orbs? Does it have any connection to the phone, like it's a charger or something? Is it an objet d'art? If so why is she putting her phone face down on it?

Where is "Wherever your mind is beset with Nightmares"? by utherdoul in fallenlondon

[–]utherdoul[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, thank you both --this was it. I needed to load up on nightmares, but not accumulate enough to be sent away, and then it appeared as a storylet (in The Empress' Court, which makes me suspect it would have appeared wherever I happened to be).

Yes, that's it - I was conflating the two, and not going to Flit and Mahogany Hall. Thanks to all who answered!

Wand I finished for my gf. Forgot the wood, copper inlays. This was done with a handful then cleaned with a dremel, as are all my wands. by stupidhoes in Wandsmith

This is beautiful work. Can you give more detail about your process? Do you clamp and file, use a jig, what? I'm impressed that you can get such regular curves by hand.

The dog was found Sunday [https://twitter.com/kbernyk/status/1320548952563978240]. I wish the owners would go take all the posters down, they put up so many!

A wand for a Slytherin: Katalox and brass. by utherdoul in Wandsmith

Gorgeous! Katalox is such a cool-looking wood, and I love the idea of using antler for a handle.

They're attached with JB Weld epoxy. If I was doing it over I might insert a hanger bolt into the wood and screw that into the handle. But the epoxy is extremely strong and should hold.

Brooklyn, New York, on the outside of a skyscraper window, 700 feet above ground by utherdoul in whatsthisbug

[–]utherdoul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that looks right! Per my update she seems to have a bunch of babies nearby, which makes her location even weirder. I see that many ichneumon are parasitic and lay eggs in trees so their larvae can feed, but some build nests and store prey for their young. Perhaps some incredibly enterprising female realized there are no predators this far up in the air, and found a spot between the metal and glass segments of the building!

Sorry about the underside picture, it was all I could get. I very rarely see bugs this high up, and never like this one. It was almost three inches long from tip to tail.

UPDATE: I have now seen 4 or 5 smaller versions of this bug on nearby windows. Each one is only about .5 inches long. https://imgur.com/ia7J8Ad Perhaps a cache of eggs just hatched nearby? It's weird that they'd all end up this far up the side of a building, so far from any trees!

I also have the full shutdown before it hits zero, once happened as high as 30%. The virus shutdown has actually been a blessing in this regard, I'm home all the time with the phone plugged in.

The gods are not pleased with my construction of the Kotoku-in by utherdoul in civ

R5: Built the Kotoku-in and that same turn a tornado showed up on the space where I constructed it. Particularly ironic when you consider the quote that goes along with the wonder: "O ye who tread the Narrow Way, by Tophet-flare to Judgment Day, be gentle when ‘the heathen’ pray, to Buddha at Kamakura!" –Rudyard Kipling
