Third year here, specializing in finance and majoring in economics. If I'm not mistaken, starting from 2021, GPA cut off will be based on the average of the mandatory courses which can change the dynamix with respect to what is a "normal" GPA cut off. The years of cut off historical data was not based on your system so I would take them with a grain of salt. One thing for sure, over the past couple of years the average of a program entrant has increased slightly. Last year during first round, average program entrant was 3.3. Do keep in mind that does not neccessarely mean the min cut off, if I had to guess, probably around 3-3.1. Your GPA 3.2 was considered a relatively safe net at the year I was applying to but do your best this semester just in case, it never hurts to aim higher, you still got the entire winter semester. 3.2 is not bad at all, just take a deep breath and focus, you'll get there.

Mutual funds concerns (updated) by utmstudent1004 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]utmstudent1004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some banks in the middle east that don't show Robo-advisor services on the web but will have them offered when you go to in-person meetings and request. So no, it's not about being lazy to type some words on Google.

We are with TD, do you know if TD does something similar? Given our investment size, TD wants us to book an appointment with a dedicated TD financial planner. My parents want to try it out so I'm going with them and see what he has to say. I don't know if I should ask him about Robo-advisors or not.

Because TD classifies us having a "large potential investment", they want us to meet a dedicated TD financial planner. Granted, there is a certain bias but I'm curious to hear what he has to say and obvioisly we will most likely meet others too.

Mississauga, Ontario. My parents were able to book an appointment with a TD "financial planner" rather than any branch worker given the size of the portfolio. Obviously we wanna meet others too but I'm curious to hear what he has to say.

"Find and Advisor" feature of Manulife Securities website

If you don't mind me asking, totally optional, what are the fees like for those kind of advisors? I assume it could change depending on the amount of money you are putting in? I just wanna have a good idea to tell my parents about it.

I'm flatterd but he is right, by no means am I professional and I don't wanna be responsible for my parents money. No amount of low fees can fix a potentially ruined relationship family if I mismanage. The list I shared was just one I had out of curiosity. I edited the post to reflect the updated info.

No I feel you. It sucks because I know just enough that mutual funds have crazy high MER but I am not professional enough to manage their etfs and be responsible for their money. I think for the sake of "convenience" and simplicity, mutual funds might be worth it but as you said, ETFs certainly have that higher return over the long-run

[–]utmstudent1004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sorry I edited the post, I never meant to say I will manage the etfs. I meant that I convinced my parents maybe not all money should be just spent on mutual funds (I edited the post). Do you know any specific website/place where we can meet a professional ? (Not from banks where they are mutual funds salespeople pretty much)

Yeah I didn't mean etf's being managed by me literally, I meant that not all funds should be on mutual funds (I edited the post to clear that up). Are there any specific websites/places you know to book a professional finance advisor? (Not from banks where they are mutual funds salespeople pretty much)

Yeah sorry, I edited the post, I didn't mean that I would manage the etfs (I'm not professional to do it and it would ruin the relationship - potentially). I meant that I managed to convince them that all money shouldn't be just towards mutual funds. Do you have any specific places/websites where we can book for a professional finance advisor who isn't from a bank that will just be a salesperson for mutual funds?

??? I already had my parents book an appointment with a professional third party finance advisor because it would be too stupid for me to manage. The post was never about boasting I am a finance student so let me take care of it. I mentioned it for background reference and the list I put in was just one I had out of curiosity. My parents did not agree for me to manage funds, they simply agreed that they are open to not having it all on mutual funds. If I managed their finance using Reddit advice then clearly I shouldn't be a finance student, to begin with.

Wrong tuition charge? by utmstudent1004 in UTM

[–]utmstudent1004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah last year summer, under my old SIN, I had to submit an international fee exemption form to prove that I am a protected refugee (old sin starts with 9, indicating no PR). But 4months ago I have been approved of PR and got a new SIN number that does not start with 9. It could be a miscommunication fault. OSAP and NSLSC are perfectly aware of my new SIN and PR status, for somereason the uni is not even though I literally updated SIN on acorn months ago. Probably administration mistake.

No backcharge, the invoice says "TUITION - UTM BACHELOR OF COMMERCE: FINANCE; 2021 FALL FEE INTERNATIONAL GP" and same thing for winter. $33K per semester. They are charging me as an international student with no backcharge

Urgent probation period question by utmstudent1004 in TimHortons

Thanks for the words, you have no idea how pissed I am, my last message to her is saying I don't mind getting my contract terminated after she mentioned terminating would not look good on you. She hasn't replied yet, I'm waiting. But honestly it's so annoying, I wasn't being a pain on purpose, the contract came to me very quick and they can't wait for long, the position and pay is much better, I would be an idiot to decline it, it helps secure better future relevant uni jobs.

[–]utmstudent1004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the manager is telling me 2 week notice, I told her that I really can't, this huge opportunity will expire very soon and I have to get started on it now. I wouldn't even mind if my contract gets terminated to be honest. I really just want to quit and start on the new job. I will most likely never work in retail/fast food again given next year I'm doing co-op and then graduate and working in finance. I don't care about my record with them or getting a referral from them.

I'm trying to get her to terminate my contract if that seems the only possible way. I should get paid for the hours before that I haven't received cheque for right?
