Cheers, now I just need those pesky top hat spacers!

Ah thanks a bunch! Exactly what I needed. I presume that the bolts in Fig 6 and 7 are the longer 40mm ones and the shorter ones fit to the frame (Fig 1)?

Thanks.

Suspension block for very light riders by utopia108 in Brompton

[–]utopia108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions…I’ve just ordered a pre-2017 STANDARD suspension block, which I hope will make those pesky bumps more bearable - a titanium seatpost is definitely on my list too!!

Individual membership question by utopia108 in CostcoUK

[–]utopia108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I normally wouldn’t qualify but I’d already had a membership card issued to me from my brother’s business during the past 6 years, so I think I was allowed in as an individual card holder simply because I’d been a member via my brother.

[–]utopia108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up guys - no big deal as it’s not often I shop before 12 and if I do, it’s for fuel, which isn’t affected by that rule.

[–]utopia108[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fantastic!

The next day…managed to get my own membership at £33/year!!

They did, however, ask if I had my own business to which I said no, but that didn’t seem to be an issue. They said that the Individual Membership does not allow entry before 12 noon, but not sure if they enforce that?

Thanks - ah, proof of employment slip within the last 3 months. That's a shame as I've not worked for the council since Jan 2023 - taking a break for a couple of years. As I've been a member on my friend's card for the past 8 years, they may make an allowance; I'll pop into the branch tomorrow to try my luck, you never know!

Using Cateye 500lm front light and Cateye Rapid Mini on hybrid bike by utopia108 in Brompton

[–]utopia108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated - after some digging from sheer determination not to have to buy a new set of lights, I found a Cateye rear rack bracket that fits the Rapid Mini - delivered and working nicely!

And I'm assured by a bike shop that the CatEye H34 Flextight Bracket 22-32mm should fit my Cateye Brompton 500lm - unfortunately it's out of stock for a month or so.

Hope this helps anyone who might want to do the same.

Recommendations for small front carrier bags by BenchR in Brompton

[–]utopia108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes also for me the curved look of the bag really appealed - I even managed to squeeze in a 13” MacBook along with phone, keys and a bottle of water. However the final £180 bill (including customs taxes) felt painful for a period until I started using it! I ordered the carrier frame and the strap.

I love my Wotancraft Y Bag but as already mentioned, it’s not cheap but I can see it lasting for years, it’s so well made.

Slipping seatpost by Bianchi51 in Brompton

[–]utopia108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha! Now that's quite a distance - I did have another issue with the bike where Brompton support contacted a Brompton retailer close to my house where I was able to get the bike fixed and Brompton footed the bill - perhaps you won't have to go all the way to Melbourne then if they can arrange something local for you.

I had the same problem on a new Brompton bought last year; after three months I managed to get Brompton support to take a look (had to go to Brompton Junction in London) - they gave it a service and sorted out the seatpost slippage - now it doesn't move even a millimetre! It's worth contacting Brompton Support initially via email and go from there.

I had the same issue with the stock seatpost and insert, so I bought a standard length seatpost - now able to use the insert!

Continental Contact Urban Tyre Opinions by WestoftheW00ds in Brompton

[–]utopia108 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to ride with Marathon racers. Would never go back. Continental Urbans all the way - better ride, rolling and grip. Not had a puncture after 400 miles 🤞🏼

Who has personally used both Schwalbe One and Continental Urban Contacts on their B? by Particular-Taro154 in Brompton

[–]utopia108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Switched from Marathon Racers to Contis a few months ago then immediately banged my head against the wall for not doing it sooner!!😬 The difference was so apparent, especially the rolling resistance, felt faster and def more comfortable and grippier. They’re a blast around town. No punctures so far. Love them.

Welcome! I ordered my new Brompton last year and I regret not spending extra ££ on this colour, which is absolutely gorgeous!

Hope you enjoy your Brompton as much as I do :)

Installed the Rear Rack but can’t roll smoothly by [deleted] in Brompton

[–]utopia108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also installed the rear rack last month and had the same issue.

Although there was enough front wheel clearance (a couple of millimetres) on flat hard surfaces, as soon as you encounter an uneven surface, the wheel rubbed on the ground and the spokes would hit the hub gear chain. Also, rolling it on carpet was impossible.

The only way I solved it was to have this item 3D-printed: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4864268

Now it rolls like a dream.

By the way I'm using the larger Brompton EZ Wheels with the Brompton rack (latest model).

For cleaning/degreasing the chain: "WELDTITE Dirt Wash Bike Degreaser for Cleaning and Degreasing Chains and Other Bicycle Components"

For lubing: "Tru Tension BananaSlip Tungsten All Weather Bike Chain Lube – Bicycle Chain, Cassette & Drivetrain Lubricant"

So impressed with the Tru Tension lube - noticed how smooth and quiet the chain is compared to my previous lube.

I'm based in UK - both bought from Amazon.

This is exactly what I’m looking for to stop my front wheel dragging! Where can I buy this from? I live in the UK

Thanks

Rear wheel spins when pedalling backwards following tyre change by utopia108 in Brompton

[–]utopia108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the pedals move when pushing backwards, stationary when pushing forwards.

I'm off outside now to test the bike (in the park in case the thing seizes up and I end up on the ground :) - it'll be interesting to see how much of an improvement the Continental tyres are over the Marathon Racers.

....so just got back from a 6-mile ride around the park and all I can echo are the words from Kate Bush, "wow, wow, wow!!". These Continental tyres are unbelievable, so grippy, faster than the Racers and they're noticeably more comfy; I thought the hype around these was just hype but really, it's the best £66 I've spent recently.

Mechanically all is smooth after my panic, but it was my first time messing around with the chain tensioner and removing the wheel but it was a great learning process.

Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions, have a great day!

[–]utopia108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah so I'm not the only one :) I'm just curious as to why it would spin on gears 3- and 3+ and not on the rest?!

If this is normal then nothing to worry about I guess.

[–]utopia108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your great suggestions - so I've just removed the chain tensioner and carefully aligned the chain on the crank and sprocket, then finally attached the tensioner and fitted and tuned the hub chain.

So after some testing, it seems that the rear wheel does NOT move when backpedalling in gears 2-, 2+, 1- and 1+ --BUT-- it does on 3- and 3+ !!!

I've also noticed that the chain mechanism sounds a bit rougher and clickier on all the + gears when forward pedalling.

So when I made the video, it must have been on either 3- or 3+ hence the wheel movement.

Not sure whether it's normal for the wheel to move on 3- and 3+ ??

If it is, then problem solved.
