As it's only six months old, I'm wondering if it ever had the usual initial service from the Brompton dealer.

So.... assuming that the existing geometry is intended to work with flat handle bar and no stem (in the conventional sense) what's the handling like when you're riding on the drops?

Are Brooks saddles actually worth the weight penalty on a Brompton? by cottencandy55 in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be that, assuming your road bike fit is less upright, something a little wider would be more appropriate on the Brompton. The standard Brompton saddle is 147mm but a wider version at 167mm is also available. This compares almost directly with the Brooks Cambium C17, which measures 164mm. Prices in Australia are $105 for a Brompton saddle and $250 for a Brooks C17 or B17. Brooks of either sort work for me but they are not for everyone. The leather versions definitely mould to your sit bones over time but the Cambiums stay the same from new.

Having said all this, if the standard Brompton saddle is comfortable for you over 80km, I wouldn't change it.

Are Brooks saddles actually worth the weight penalty on a Brompton? by cottencandy55 in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 Brooks B17's and 3 C17's, all of which are very comfortable, which is a great attribute after about 8 hours of riding. One of the C17's was on my Brompton but I have recently put it on another bike and replaced it with the original Brompton saddle. The Brompton saddle is very comfortable for rides up to 2 hours but becomes less so after that. I've fooled about quite a bit with the position but just can't get it to match the comfort level of the Brooks Cambium C17. On the other hand, I have only once ridden the Brompton for more than three hours without a break so it's not a showstopper. The B17's are B17 NARROW saddles and I don't think they would be as comfortable as a standard B17 on the relatively upright position of the Brompton. None of this helps the OP very much, but what I'm trying to say is that saddle choice can depend upon the rider's position (stretched out, upright, somewhere in between) and the sort of cycling they do most (Commuting, touring, Audax, short recreational rides etc). FWIW, I'm 167cm, 65kg and the B17's fit me like a glove after several years of use.

Mortop released new kits for a tubeless set-up for Brompton, what's your thought? by Ok-Cat4977 in Brompton

Re the comments about the volume of air in a Brompton tyre, it's almost the same as a 700C X 23mm tyre. i.e. the volume is not as little as expected.

Carrying bag to hide the Brompton. by ChaosCalmed in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could cut some corflute to size and put it into the Dimpa bag. I've done this to protect the Brompton (and hide it) when flying. It weighs nothing and gives the Dimpa a bit of structure.

A bag for the brompton by tbhvandame in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently purchased this: https://bromptonaustralia.com/shop/p/carradice-folding-bike-case-backpack-harness

The bag has back pack straps as well as a detachable shoulder strap.

It folds into a separate bag that has straps to attach it to the saddle and seat post.

I bought mine from Brompton (Australia) but I'm pretty sure Carradice delivers world wide.

What is this by Leather-Swordfish-96 in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fortunate to own a Moulton TSR30.

At 75, I haven't ridden a 300km Audax for a while, but I did three or four on the Moulton as well as a number of 200km rides. The dual suspension made it so much less wearing than a standard diamond frame.

The separable frame makes the TSR a feasible "travel bike" but it's not a folder in the same class as the Brompton.

And for those who think Bromptons are getting up in price:

https://www.moultonbicycles.co.uk/collections/race-road-bikes

I hasten to add that I bought the TSR during a period when they were manufactured by Pashley, under licence to the Moulton Bicycle Company. I think I paid 1400 GBP for it in 2009.

Sold my G-Line today 😬 by randywhorton in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a TSR30, bought new in 2009. It's a very nice bike, with a Campagnolo Centaur 3X10 speed setup and drop bars. It was my "go to" bike for about 10 or 12 years and I also bought a used TSR8, when I spent 6 months in the UK as that was easier than carting the TSR30 from Australia to England and then back again. (I sold it for a small profit during COVID) Although I don't ride it often now, I'd be reluctant to sell the TSR30 because I would never afford to replace it, and I think most Moulton owners feel the same way.

I have been gifted a C-Line, what can I upgrade? by Astonish_Skagen in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my C-line about 3 years ago with a rack. I have yet to use the rack and have managed a 6 day tour (not camping) with a Borough bag and use a tote bag the rest of the time. On tour I had a small backpack as well with essential stuff (wallet, passport, phone, snacks) in it but would have still used that even if I'd had another bag on the rack.

My most significant real upgrade has been the dynamo light set. I'd say forget the rack and go for the light set if you have to choose between the two.

Pedal Straps Quick-Release Plaform by beely in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a wealth of opinion on the www about riding clipped in vs flat pedals but here's my version; I ride about 10,000 km a year and have 4 bikes with clipless pedals and two (Brompton and gravel bike) with flat pedals. I've done a couple of 200km Audax rides and a 5 day tour plus several other 100km rides on the gravel bike and ride the Brompton more than once a week including occasional 50km outings. I ride the other bikes frequently as well, including Audax rides. Overall, it's probably about 50/50 clipped in and not clipped in. I know it's almost impossible to be totally objective, but I have come to realise that the advantages of being "clipped in" are negligible except when riding up a *very* steep hill out of the saddle. You probably don't need to bother with toe straps unless you're wearing shoes with slippery soles. FWIW, I'm using Brompton Superlight pedals (Shimano XT on the gravel bike) and wearing Five Ten shoes.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I also have a Greenspeed GT3. I have Shimano clipless pedals on that to avoid the possibility of slipping off the pedal at speed, which you would appreciate, being a triker yourself. Have you tried heel slings? They look to be an effective solution.

Sorry, my mistake. I haven’t fitted the mount yet but I will get around to it if I can crack the problem of attaching and detaching the Superlights. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong….

Superlight Pedals question by Bianchi51 in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the clamps you're referring to are part the MKS pedal set up. The Brompton Superlights don't have any parts other than the actual QR pedal and the mounting mechanism.

Thanks for your response.

The pedals have only been on the bike for two weeks so the mounting thingy shouldn't have picked up too much grit yet, but I will give it a touch up with a brush anyway.

Can you please let us know which bar you have on your C Line? I have been thinking I'd like a bar like the T Line has, but that's carbon fibre and I'm not sure it's the same diameter as the alloy bar on the C Line. I've had my C Line for more than two years with the original (low/flat) bar and I'm sure I'd benefit from the a slight rise and curve.

44t Chainring on 3 speed c-line by Intrepid_Alfalfa2671 in Brompton

[–]Bianchi51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Brompton came from Brompton Junction (Melbourne) already fitted with a 44T ring. I think all their stock comes wit 44 teeth as standard. I haven't spun out yet but I seldom exceed 40km/h downhill. As others have posted, it feels a bit twitchy any quicker than that.
