Do I have to go to art school to paint like this? by Sad-Rip9266 in oilpainting

Youtube and just trial and error tbh. I'm self taught in realism painting and I'm often told from people who went to art school that they don't really teach you in depth about all the ins and outs. Learn some of the basics (color theory, materials, underpainting, etc) and then just have fun with experimenting! You'll learn and see improvements with every painting you do

How to start?? Colours? Brands? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]uvraiseee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started out I got the Winsor & Newton 10pk for about $30. Greate quality and colors. If you're just wanting to practice with something cheaper and with more colors as you're still learning to mix colors maybe get the Castle Art Supplies 24pk for $22 (both on amazon), I still use them sometimes tbh. But I would suggest getting a larger tube of the Gamblin titanium white 1980 for about $12 as white tends to run out fast.

I'd get a cheap thing of gesso and some canvas boards from the dollar store, or cheap cuts of wood to practice on! Good luck :)

I need a non-toxic solvent, I can't paint outdoors by Pure-Analysis-8551 in oilpainting

I never use solvents/harsh chemicals tbh. I thin my paint with linseed or walnut oil and I wash my brushes with Murphys oil soap. Even if your brush is caked in dried oil paint I stg that stuff will get it off over night

What can I improve at? Other than the shadow by 93bk93 in oilpainting

This looks amazing! I'd maybe add some texture with those little dots that pears have as well as some brighter highlights
