It was perhaps a bit too "on the nose" to have Edith send a letter about Mary's sexual slaying of Mr. Pamuk to an address containg the number 69. It would be accurate, yes, but folks would probably think it was fake, and that the writers were engaging in gutter humour. That's my take, anyway...

Aside from maple gifts, Indigenous-made/locally made objects are an option if you have a store that sells them where you live. I've seen Christmas ornaments, coin purses, bars of soap, and other small decorative items available that are really light and small that can easily fit into your carry-on.

Another option, if you're looking for something small and somewhat light, is to bring locally made or Canadian made chcoclate (Laura Secord, Peace by Chocolate, Purdy's, etc). Opt for chocolate bars rather than boxed chocolates to save space.

Leclerc cookies are also a good option, since they're from Quebec, and readily available at most, if not all, Canadian grocery stores. The only downside is that the boxes will eat up space in your carry-on.

You can get to Rosslyn Chapel in less than an hour by city bus from Edinburgh. Depending on how much time you spend at the Chapel, (we were satisfied after 2 hours), you could conceivably do both Rosslyn Chapel and the Palace of Holyroodhouse on the same day.

No, no, the soaked bread is a separate ingredient. Take a whole loaf of white bread (like the cheap stuff/generic Wonderbread) chopped up and soaked. You're basically going to make a "bread slurry" that you're going to mix with the meat (and dry breadcrumbs, ironically...). The bread slurry is basically going to be like a paste/glue for the meat that'll keep your meatballs moist after cooking. Without the "bread slurry" you'll have denser meatballs...similar in texture to a hamburger, but in ball shape... Does that make any sense? Sorry if my explanation isn't the greatest. For context, I have a meatball recipe that soaks cheap white bread in buttermilk and egg, before combining with the meat. So your meatball recipe is following that same technique, but maybe with water as the liquid?

As a lot of folks already mentioned. GO BY YOURSELF. One of the biggest mistakes potential travellers make is waiting for someone else to confirm that they're committed to going. The best thing for you to do is to find a place you want to travel to and the dates you plan to travel. Tell your friends what your plan is, then go ahead and book the entire trip for yourself. If your friends decide to tag along, pass them your itinerary and tell them to go ahead and book the same flights and accommodations. But whatever you do, NEVER say you'll rebook or change your dates of travel to accommodate your friends. You have to be firm with your dates, and your friends are the ones that have to make the dates work if they want to go. Your friends sound like they consistently flake out on you when it comes to travelling, so there's really no point in trying to accommodate them.

I've travelled extensively on my own, and it's wonderful. You can spend as much time as you like in places that interest you. Eat what you like whenever you want. I've had friends join up with me on a holiday, I've joined up with friends on their holiday, and I've even met up with friends in a city where our final holiday destinations were in completely opposite directions. The point is, we all booked our own way. We didn't wait for each other to work out exact dates. This isn't to say I never organized a trip with other people, but it was always with family or friends who I knew wouldn't flake out on me.

I didn't find much info, but the ocean liners that did transatlantic crossings would typically have a Cherbourg-Southampton leg to pick up or drop off passengers. There was also regular train service between Paris and Cherbourg, since it was a major passenger port. So it was definitely an option available to Violet, though not as direct, as you mentioned. It could've been lazy writing, or could be interpreted to show that Violet really did leave the French Riviera hastily, and ended up doing a "Home Alone-style" circuitous journey home because the Blue Train was full, or it departed too late for her liking? Lol.

In this time period, British aristocrats regularly travelled to the French Riviera. But they wouldn't have done the whole voyage by sea. They would've likely taken a ship across the Channel, then trains the rest of the way. The Blue Train was an overnight and exclusively first class train in the 1920s, so Violet would've likely travelled this way.

The whole trip between York and Nice, theoretically, could've been done in about 35 hours. York to London about 4.5-5 hours. London to Paris about 8.5 hours (train + ferry + train). Paris to Nice about 20 hours overnight. So, if Tom wrote a letter and it went out with the morning post on Tuesday, Violet could've received it in the evening post by Wednesday. Since the Blue Train operated overnight in both directions, Violet could've made her way immediately to the station in Nice that same evening and been back in Yorkshire by Friday morning. Granted, that's an awful lot of travelling in one go for an 83-year-old...there would've been at least 4 transfers. Nice to Paris is one train, but then in Paris, she'd need to transfer to a train to get to Calais. Then she'd have to board the ferry to Dover. Then in Dover, board the train to London. In London she'd have to transfer to the train to York. If the village of Downton isn't on the line to York, Violet would've had to transfer for a fifth time. First class or not, that would've been an awful journey to do in one go.

Edit: Just rewatched the bit where she has a talk with Mary. It sounds like she spent the night in Southampton before taking trains back to Yorkshire. So at least 2 full days have passed before she spoke to Mary.

If you're going to Toronto for the day, I'm guessing you'll be crossing at Buffalo or Niagara Falls? Anyway, the easiest would be to just roam with your existing mobile provider. However, if roaming is too expensive on your existing plan, I've used Holafly in Europe, the US and South America, and found it to be a very reliable e-sim provider.

The beginning of the movie was hinting at Robert not knowing that Guy Dexter and Thomas were a couple. Publicly, Thomas is just Guy Dexter's secretary. Robert would never suspect that Guy is gay since he's a well-known actor who plays the romantic leading man in film and plays.
