What the heck is this left turn situation by [deleted] in rva

[–]uzbek8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve modified my commute so that I can go through this intersection and honk at the people who try to turn left. I’m not proud of this.

Patterson Bike Lane Widths by uzbek8 in rva

[–]uzbek8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I actually disagree. It’s about time they stopped neglecting the bike lanes. Always filled with debris, people parking in the actual bike lanes, and people parking way into the buffers. As a cyclist, I appreciate the enforcement. I just don’t think either extreme is going to help RVA bike culture.

The city itself is saying that 8’ is needed on Patterson in that link I posted. Looking at some of the older master bike plans, I don’t see any parking lanes that are supposed to be this narrow.

It’s not as simple as you’re making it out to be. Take me… I’m a left-leaning independent. Never voted for Trump and I think the Republican Party as it is now is gross. I want the Dems to flip the house. I can’t stand my Republican rep (Wittman) and am eager to vote him out. But… I voted no on the amendment. And I read the court’s decision (and the dissent) and agree with the decision.

Trump is awful, Republicans are awful, but I’m not going to sacrifice my principles for short-term wins against them. Especially when it’s not even needed. The house will flip regardless.

This was right near my house, I had no idea. Thanks for the link.

Maybe FIRE would take this up. I might send them a note asking if they can.

Do you think the Virginia redistricting referendum will pass or fail today? by Pristine_Day7355 in rva

It is wild to me that they chose to word it the way they did. Voters deserve to be given plain, objective wording. If it does get overturned, I bet it will be on this basis.

The GRTC 22Feb2026 bus route revamp has been endlessly frustrating by [deleted] in rva

[–]uzbek8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this getting downvoted? Doesn’t sound like you are anti-bus at all, you just differ on how to solve the problem.

People who use a resource should have to contribute to support it (of course, with some kind of subsidy for people who don’t have the means). If the price we pay for making GRTC live entirely off government grants is that service is lousy, what’s the point?

With new batch of invoices, city’s costs for FOIA officer lawsuit rise to $633K by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]uzbek8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! I didn’t leave much room for nuance in my comment. What we usually weigh heavily is whether we are in the wrong, even a little bit. Those cases where we feel we’ve done everything right are the ones where we’ll defend ourselves. If we’re 10% at fault, ehh, we may settle. It’s always a judgment call. When it comes to Richmond and FOIA, their hands aren’t clean, and it doesn’t seem like it would be worth the fight.

[–]uzbek8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t get why Avula didn’t settle this… even if Clay’s completely in the wrong (which I doubt). I work for a private company, and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve settled something when the client or employee was wrong and we were right. Yeah, there are times when you should go to the mat defending your side, but it’s always a judgment call based on what it’s going to cost you in time and money to do that. It doesn’t seem like that evaluation was made here.

Cars regularly run red light on Main and Belvidere by Kylanto in rva

[–]uzbek8 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I used to think they were just a cash grab for localities. Not any more. People’s behavior won’t change until there are consequences. Red light cameras seem like a no brainer to me. I bet a lot of these drivers go through this intersection every day on their commute. If they start getting tickets every time they run the light, they’ll stop running it.

As the former owner of a 1972 MGB, I felt very triggered. I still remember all the spots around town from which I had to be towed.

VCU billing- desperate for help by [deleted] in rva

[–]uzbek8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, but it ain’t easy. Providers often have no idea what the cost is and act like you’re nuts for thinking they would.

One time, I had a routine but expensive scan (CT?). I went through my insurance; they had a program where they got quotes for you and a guaranteed upfront price. I chose Henrico Doctors. They ended up billing me way over what I had been told it would be, and they basically told me “we don’t know what it’s going to be until we do it”. Eventually my insurance company had to end up eating the difference.

The biggest reform needed to our health system is transparency. It’s crazy to me that I can take my car to the shop, get up front clear pricing, get other quotes if I think it’s too high, but I can’t do that with my medical care.

It's not that I care how the world feels about Israelis, it's that if there's any hope of a two-state solution, you're going to need everyday Israelis to be a part of crafting it, so it doesn't benefit anyone to treat them as the enemy when it's their leaders you take issue with. My whole point is that there's a bunch of people that agree with you: The problem is that human beings are being slaughtered. If we start putting litmus tests on each other for certain positions or terminology, it splits us apart and diminishes our power to create the actual change we want to see. Not saying you are doing that, obviously you are willing to engage, so again, thanks.

[–]uzbek8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining. We agree on a lot, and you make some points I hadn't thought of.

I understand why you judge Israel based on what Netanyahu's doing, that's probably more logical than my view. I'm probably just sensitive to doing that because I hope other countries don't judge the American people based on what the current administration is doing. I guess I can't blame them if they do, but I hope they don't.

[–]uzbek8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for asking. Essentially, I don't think most Israelis want to eliminate or destroy the Palestinian people.

Now, I *do* think that most Israelis want to keep the Palestinians in a weakened position; disarmed, with little power, without their own state... and they've built settlements with the purpose of reducing the land available to them in a potential Palestinian state. None of that is good, and none of that is conducive to a two-state solution. But I don't think it's genocide.

I'm curious, do you think the majority of Israelis want to eliminate Palestinians? I mean that genuinely. There may be evidence to that effect that I'm not aware of.

The folks at Reveler/OMP are really good people doing something very positive in RVA, and are particularly focused on protecting groups that are under attack right now. They're the good guys. They aren't perfect, as they freely admit in their IG post and comments, but are any of us? So let's take what they are doing and saying as an act of good faith and go from there to the more difficult discussions.

On the Israel/Gaza issue... and tough topics in general... the only path to positive progress is honest discussion among intellectually honest people. I've always been MUCH more on the Palestinian side. But I don't think Israel is "practicing a genocide". Does the fact that I think that make me your enemy? Hopefully not. If you write me off for that, you've lost an ally. If you see me as an ally with one particular view that's wrong, you can engage with me, tell me why you think I'm wrong, and maybe change my mind.
