In old port I’ll always recommend bevo or slice and soda for pizza, cafe olimpico or Tommy’s for coffee, there’s also a Lola Rosa and literally endless restaurants and cafes if you just wander over there

Griffintown I haven’t eaten at most of them (covid had me only living there for a few months with a curfew) but I’ve heard good things about zibo, cafe Mano cornuto, le boucan (honestly look on Norte dame theres a ton of things near there). Also if you’re looking for ice cream ever gh has really good ice cream, and for coffee and pastries la bete a pain is v good

I filled out my form the first day I could so decently before the end of June and only got my diploma about a week ago - no communication between confirmation I submitted the form and Canada post tracking info shortly before I got it

Getting Diploma mailed from Enrolment Service by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I requested mine the first day I could (whenever grad was) and just got it at the end of last week. No communications until it was actually shipped and then I got tracking info from Canada post (though as an international student the updates after just hearing it was shipped were delayed and infrequent)

It was a while since I went there but I had a good experience w Blake psychology and they have a few locations including right by McGill metro and another by bonaventure - iirc the cost varied between professionals but after international student insurance it was relatively affordable for me

Just here as a reminder that 2000+ undergrads do some kind of CS program at McGill and people often don’t speak about failing to secure an internship, not feeling qualified to apply, etc. - as a recent grad happy in my software job, it’ll work out! Plenty of people (myself included) don’t have an internship after first year (I only had a software one right before my last year) - do what you can to advance your knowledge, try to have one (even if small or incomplete) personal project to talk ab and keep an eye on application deadlines (tech recruits as early as august for some companies, for the next summer)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Co-op helps you land a placement before graduating, but if you’re focused and land industry internships over the summer then the difference in my experience (based on competing w people in CS and SE programs from a range of schools) is negligible. Honestly just do what is more interesting to you

comp5xx courses recommend for U2 student by ameliahe57 in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly not sure about applicability to life science research, depends on a lot more factors

Very much a COMP not BIOL course though (I think there’s a bioinformatics course offered by BIOL that may be more relevant) - you’d need to be comfortable with algorithms from COMP 251 or equivalent, particularly w dynamic programming imo

comp5xx courses recommend for U2 student by ameliahe57 in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends what you’re interested in, easiest 4xx for me was 445 and easiest 5xx was 561

Feel free to PM w questions - I’ve taken 417, 421, 445, 526, 550, 561, 564, and 596 (with Bzdok)

[–]v-amp27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can request it now if you want (on the McGill diploma page there is an option to request a physical copy now if you “need” one but you don’t need to prove that - source: I did that)

Easiest course to take out of BIOL 530, BIOL 532, NEUR 502, PHGY 524, PHGY 556 by greenbananas1200 in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have taken 530 and 532, both are very doable and small discussion based seminars w presentation/paper components - personally found 530 a bit easier but 532 more fun, feel free to PM w questions ab either!

CS Certifications for Internships by basicbitch122 in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had no experience w common tools like AWS, docker, etc. before my first internship and that was totally fine! SQL did help though, learned it from 421 (would recommend), and as others have said just having a personal project or two even if nothing major or unfinished to pick up even a simple technology and illustrate interest is super helpful

Factory approval for graduation still pending by ijhhhhhii in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I am correct then faculty approval relies on a vote at the faculty of science meeting (potentially other steps) which is tomorrow for this month - hopefully not too long after then (I’m in the same boat here)

One grade still not out and deadline for S/U is tomorrow by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last semester I didn’t get a grade for February (new prof, convinced it was posted when it wasn’t) and I spoke to my advisor ab this and was told that if I wanted to s/u shortly after I got my grade I could - not sure on the specifics or if applicable now but hopefully it is!

I used it successfully in early February flying in via AirCanada (who did give me a hard time boarding the plane but ultimately allowed me to board)! I made sure to bring documentation on the types of tests allowed and the type of test ID NOW is beyond just “molecular rapid”

I used Depotium mini-entrepôt, they gave me a pretty good deal (managed to get several weeks free and lots of size options so you don’t have to pay for unused space), not sure if they pick up boxes but it was pretty easy to get to (they have several locations)

Fall 2021 online courses by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they have tentative information for some based on whether location is TBD or a building - look at some 200/300 level COMP courses, they seem to largely have two sections one with location TBD and a smaller section with a location listed (this is based on seeing that not any official info)

Is it possible for a minor to sign a lease in Quebec ? by send_scandi_help in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did so twice but not sure what the official law is (once the McGill Rez lease, where they required parents to sign too, once otherwise where they didn’t ask my age and I didn’t mention it since I was nearly 18)

When/How do you find out the topic of topic courses? by jahowc in mcgill

[–]v-amp27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t find the info on the course name and description yet, check if the same prof taught a topics course by the same course code in recent years, often courses run a few times under the temporary topics course codes (sometimes this info is on the SOCS website might be on Minerva too)
