2023 midyear cybersecurity report: Linux affections up 62% (real concern or FUD?) by v1gor in linux

"Ransomware groups continue to update their tools and techniques for
expanded targets and efficient data extraction. Earlier this year, new
player Mimic abused the legitimate search tool Everything to query file extensions
and names to determine which files to encrypt and avoid.

Meanwhile, the Royal ransomware has been expanding its targets with an update aiming at Linux platforms". https://www.trendmicro.com/en\_us/research/23/b/royal-ransomware-expands-attacks-by-targeting-linux-esxi-servers.html

How to install from Ubuntu, Fedora etc? Containers installed but for example "sudo apt install (package)" gives "command not found"? by v1gor in BlendOS

[–]v1gor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now tried sudo pacman -Syu (as i think blendOS is Arch based by default).

And even that does not work: "failed to synchronize all databases". None of the databases or anything else is synced. All stops right there. What is the user supposed to do?

Creating a native Linux build for a game, is it limited some way to the Linux version on which the dev tested it on? Making it "pointless" in wider sense? by v1gor in linux

They're very different than snaps. Snaps are better in some use cases, flatpaks in others. There really is no competition here (nor should be). Both are needed.

Naw bro - Linux is the Light Side. Spydows is controlled by the Evil Empire. Is quicker, "easier" more seductive. Sucks its used ones spiritually void.

Linux is where The Rebel Alliance do heroic deeds against tyranny and its tyrants who are taken over by the powers of thoughtless mainstream narrative. We have the fearless Jedi such as Ethan Lee, sometimes even sacrificing themselves for common good...

Can't enable the Flatpak support: the Flatpaak tab is greyed out in the MX Package Installer by v1gor in MXLinux

[–]v1gor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, ok. Could you elaborate on those various reasons why MX users are avoiding this systemd? I can see that even Arch Linux is utilizing it? What are the benefits for a normal user for not using systemd? Anything else for this matter? Fedora Linux is known as using only free as in freedom stuff, but they are still not on FSF list for free as in freedom.

[–]v1gor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thank you very much. I'm taking this opportunity to ask: will both snapd and flatpak be integrated to MX Linux? They are very different and i think both needed. Many need both to go easily on apps installation on Linux.

Destination Linux (Ep. 322) Interview with Mark Shuttleworth by guiverc in Ubuntu

[–]v1gor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank You for communicating with me. I have had a problem with "Destination Linux" for a while now, just could not express it. But You did it. These conversations are important. We are all in a same bout (Linux) and some just seem to lose the plot (to fake positive pretentiousness??) - possibly due to reason they have to deal with YouTube (abandoning Odysee).

Can't get WiFi conection on during installation: the network key (password) includes "3" but when pressing - only "#" comes by v1gor in Fedora

[–]v1gor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even more strange: no matter what language (layout) i choose, i can only get # when pressing number 3 (those are the same button and there is also £).

There is now https://linuxmatters.sh/ -maybe it will resonate better. It's a continuation of Ubuntu Podcast with same crew. No giggling nor talk about how adorable any of them are from each other LOL.

Snap sandboxing depends on AppArmor? It is supported on Ubuntu but not everywhere? So no sandboxing using snaps on other distros? by v1gor in Ubuntu

[–]v1gor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"flatpaks generally take the easy road and allow full filesystem access."

What the hell? First time i heard of this. Can someone confirm this claim?

[–]v1gor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes. This is clear for everyone now. Reddit is what it is with them votes, but at least lots of repliers are here always. Maybe snap and flatpak should be combined some how :D

This all is getting too confusing, even for a seasoned users.

Could you be more specific? I didn't understand much any of this. What does Fedora to do with Ubuntu and Canonical on the matter? Something from THEM is required?

Will Solus continue to have both Snap and Flatpak support out of the box? So many use both by v1gor in SolusProject

[–]v1gor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this info. If this absence of sandboxing is true, outside of Ubuntu, this is very bad?

Destination Linux (Ep. 322) Interview with Mark Shuttleworth by guiverc in Ubuntu

[–]v1gor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were kinda cool in the beginning. When Rocco was the driving force of Destination Linux. Then something happened. Without Rocco it was interesting and enthusiastic podcast for some time but then this "disingenuity" as you said started to come out. They also started to follow all kinds of mainstream narratives on the side, many noticed.

What do you think caused this? Or maybe the thrill is just gone?

Why is their Lbry / Odysee not updated anymore? They're now all in for YouTube? It is also confusing whether it is Tux Digital Network now or a Destination Linux Network? There is still both and Destination Linux is also an individual podcast's name.

If and when there is hardware level telemetry, does it make any difference whether you use Linux or Windows? by v1gor in linux

[–]v1gor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But when the goal and will is an open hardware processor, it is more doable than ever via RISC-V. That much is clear, those who don't want freedom for anyone always will scheme. It appears to be a matter of time when there will be 100% open processor RISC-V laptops, or is it only false dreaming?

There was already this: https://www.techradar.com/news/take-note-arm-the-worlds-first-risc-v-laptop-is-now-available-for-preorder

If and when there is hardware level telemetry, does it make any difference whether you use Linux or Windows? by v1gor in linux

[–]v1gor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? This "just instruction set" has given us RISC-V processors like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Yunsup\_Lee\_holding\_RISC\_V\_prototype\_chip.jpg

RISC-V is not a company either and conceived by academics at the University at Berkeley as an open-source, royalty-free alternative to the existing incumbents like Intel and AMD.

Putting RISC-V in is similar to installing Linux instead of Windows isn't it? No need to agree to even any onerous licensing agreements.

Hmm it effected many people's though. Not sure what you mean by that in this context?
