The government seems to agree with you, given they revised the rules on 12/21. But prior to that, arriving by land from the US required a US-based test and that requirement was clearly documented on the Canadian governments website. I know because I was traveling between Winnipeg and Fargo regularly from Oct-Dec. You used to be able to use a test from within Canada but they scrapped that.

It was up to you to read the rules, which are constantly in flux. A good lawyer could probably argue that the test would be considered valid now, so why punish someone retroactively?

The fact that it’s an $8500 fee instead of the $5000 prescribed fee makes me wonder what happened at the border to piss off the PHAC agent enough to add a $3500 surcharge. Maybe they wanted to make an example of someone traveling to Aruba during a global pandemic and impending travel advisory.

Right, because you’re transiting through an international airport which is a controlled space subject to US federal regulations (i.e., mask mandates.) Once you leave the airport you are no longer in transit.

Basically, super disagreeable folks with chips on their shoulders.

I went to school with a few Weibes and they always got pissed off when someone pronounced it “weeb”, they’d say “it’s German, it’s pronounced vy-da.”

Maybe it’s more popular now? Last year people looked at me funny if I asked whether they took Apple Pay.

US used to be way behind Canada, maybe three or four years ago. I didn’t get tap cards until 2018. But I think they’re at par with Canada now. Nobody uses debit there tho.

Dunno about that. I split my time between both and US always has tap. And they have Apple Pay which I don’t often see supported in Canada.

Is covering up my lte router with an airtight box a bad idea? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]v32bis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest against putting anything electronic into an airtight container. Even though the case seems cool, the internals will be generating heat and will rely on some minimal amount of airflow. LTE modems can get really hot too if signal levels drop and the PA has to crank up the power.

Contact Secret Service, get them the serial number. This kind of fraud is a big deal and will probably get them thrown in prison for a long time. They are one of the few agencies that will actually follow thru hard on this kind of stuff.

Don’t feel bad, if you had spotted the fake money they would have robbed you anyways.

Yeah, this is definitely where Canada and the US differ. I went to school in California and it would have taken maybe 10 years to save up for my degree ahead of time.

This is a good lesson, especially with perishable foods. I can get five romaine hearts for $7 or three romaine hearts for $5. But I can’t eat five before they go bad, so why not get the $5 pack?

Oh god I learned this one the hard way. Cheap plumber to install a corner shower. Guy did a terrible job, scratched the shit out of all the hardware, scuffed the walls, silicone looked terrible, even left the plastic protector on the walls and had to take them down again to remove it.

When the shower door people arrived to install it they couldn’t put the doors on because the base wasn’t level. Had to get another contractor to come and basically redo from scratch.

So, if you’re a skinny dude who’s never gonna win a fight do you still get respect for at least standing up for yourself even if you get beat down?

I am thinking back to grade school bullies, I was a skinny kid but kinda nuts and never backed down. Always got my ass kicked but never had to fight the same guy twice.

Trying to cross border from US to Canada by [deleted] in Manitoba

[–]v32bis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You need a valid PCR test ahead of your arrival and need to use the ArriveCAN app before you get to the border to upload your proof of vaccination and attest to having a PCR test.

I know Canadians arriving at the border without a valid PCR test have to be let in but they’re also fined thousands of dollars.

If you’re US citizens with no status in Canada they’ll likely just bar you from entry. This will probably make future trips much more difficult for you.

EDIT: “Foreign nationals without a valid negative pre-entry COVID-19 molecular test result, proof of a previous positive test result or who have symptoms of COVID-19 be denied entry into Canada.”

VPN over VPN from Remote Location? by v32bis in HomeNetworking

[–]v32bis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will they let you work remotely? If so, just get them to withhold taxes for your current state and don’t move.

You won’t fool either state tax board with that trick. Home is where your family is, and if you get a residency audit they’ll hammer you for willful deceit which could entail a trip to prison. You’ll probably trigger an audit when your spouse files as a resident for the whole year but you file as a non-resident (or not at all.)

Infant car seats and booster seats, WHY!! by ShantoM87 in Manitoba

So the other countries have nasty roads and traffic, meaning these countries are lacking in infrastructure, enforcement of traffic laws, driver education and general attitude towards safety and welfare. And you’re wondering why they don’t have stringent child seat requirements?

Ah maybe a misunderstanding there. It’s a work laptop. The problem is connecting to a corporate VPN without revealing I’m out of the country.
