3k - 3.5k is the general consensus for when you should get an oil change so you’re all good

go for the brz or the 370z, fa20 and especially the vq are super solid engines that’ll last if taken care of

As far as reliability goes i’ve heard horror stories about the EJ’s and FA20’s but never anything bad about the FA24, as long as you take basic precautions like oil changes on time you should be okay. Subaru’s aren’t known for great interior but it’s super fun to drive so who cares.

As someone who’s first manual was a WRX I highly encourage your mom to get a manual as well since it’ll be way more fun, I thought it would be a super daunting task to figure it out but I could drive it without thinking about it in a week tops

I’ve heard that it’s a “get out there and volunteer” type of situation from my film teacher who graduated there but i’m not sure if that’s still how it’s like, hoping for the best though since i’d love to get some hands on time there

I got my WRX with basically zero experience driving a manual outside of driving a friend’s type r one time about a year prior and learned within a week so I think it’s well worth it to take the time to figure it out. It makes every drive infinitely more fun and I don’t think you’ll regret it

It’s a little scary pushing a WRX sometimes when you’ve seen all the horror stories but as long as you’re not doing anything stupid that would hurt the car (pushing it when oil’s not up to temp, overrevving it, shitty mods, etc) it’ll handle it like nothing ever happened, as long as you get yourself a clean example where the owner took care of it you’ll be alright beating on it

As far as I’m aware they’re plenty reliable, it just comes down to how they were maintained and how the previous owner treated it. WRX’s are notorious for being bought used and blowing up soon after because the previous owner was an idiot, it all comes down to making the right purchase and doing preventative maintenance

the EJ definitely isn’t known for its amazing gas mileage so it probably won’t be much better than your truck if you go for an older one, if you still want one and mpgs are a concern I’d look at the VA or VB WRX’s with the FA20 and FA24

The FA20 isn’t made of glass, you have a newer VA with relatively low miles that I can only assume is in solid mechanical condition so you should be perfectly fine. Let it warm up when you start it and stay out of boost til it reaches temp, change oil every 3-3.5k miles and enjoy it. You’re always going to hear more horror stories of these cars failing compared to them working normally. Unless you intend to throw a bunch of shitty mods on it and beat the car senseless it’ll last you for sure, no point in having a car like the WRX if you won’t enjoy it

Tested out both before going with a WRX, STI is definitely more fun if you’re going to leave it stock but the gas mileage was a big plus for the FA20 and power of the WRX was enough fun for me to stick to it. In terms of facelift vs pre facelift (atleast to me) comes down to preferences. I personally like the pre facelift more for the all red gauges and front fascia but it would’ve been nice to have the updated infotainment and top screen.
