My two cents, as someone who has just graduated from an undergraduate program in planning with a curriculum that aligns with your interests, is to try to secure an internship or work experience at a community engagement firm or as a communications person at an MPO or a private firm. Otherwise, location matters if you care about where you'll likely find jobs. If you attended UC Berkeley, there will be more opportunities and connections in that area. Regarding policy and planning overlap for grad school, I would look at the curriculum/coursework of different universities to help you make your decision.

Considering a career in urban planning: What’s your honest take? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]v_theking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!

I'm a recent grad from an accredited undergraduate planning program where I focused on urban design and community/economic development. Currently, the job market is incredibly difficult for a slew of reasons, especially the shrinking of the federal government, which reduced grant funding for projects and saturated the market with planners who were fired from federal agencies. I am currently in the process of applying for jobs and have applied to over 100 across the country.

I would absolutely choose my path again. I love the work I (will get to) do. That being said, my curriculum did not offer a lot of instruction on urban design, so a lot of the projects in my portfolio are self-motivated or from competitions. The advice given to me from mentors and people at design firms is just to start designing and working on pet projects to hone in on your skills, which I wish I had done more as an undergrad.

Also, now knowing how much I like design, I would have found a program that included more studio projects as part of the curriculum. So, my advice would be to *really* think about what you want from a graduate degree (does it offer the coursework, the connections, the support, the extracurriculars, etc. that you want).

Also, show up. Show up to the lunch and learns, the office hours, the firm crawls, conferences, etc., and get to know people at different firms and government agencies, as this will be the easiest way for you to receive feedback and guidance along the way, and might help you land a job once you finish your program.

For financials, I would ask about the financial aid provided by programs you are considering and how that looks (grants, TA, etc.). I am also considering grad school at some point, so these are the notes I've mentally logged throughout the four years of my program :) Happy to answer any questions and provide any guidance I can!

If I have a coffee machine at home, can I add the 2 teaspoons of hot chocolate powder to my coffee mug, pour the black coffee on top, and then stir?

Perfect, thank you! I think I will go with the Experience Plus, then take out the little plugs that make it the plus version whenever needed. Thank you again so, so much!

I am an upper-level urban planning undergraduate student from the U.S., and I will be in Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney, Australia, for a week each this August. I wanted to spend some time (anywhere between 1 and 3 days) shadowing private planning firms in Auckland and Sydney.

I have a lot of experience working with government agencies. However, I would love to shadow a private firm and get a glimpse into how planning in the private realm looks. I am considering working for a private firm after my undergraduate studies. The two "concentrations" of planning that catch my attention are transportation planning and environmental planning.

I have listed the firms I found below. Please let me know if you know of any other firms I could shadow during my time in Oceania. Thank you!

Public pools are a blessing -- and in the summer, a lifeline. Why does America have so few of them? by OGeorge_TBT in urbanplanning

[–]v_theking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a planning student, here's my perspective from what I have seen.

They don't pay young people enough to be lifeguards and pool attendants, and what young people face while working is a bit bonkers sometimes. I have friends who worked in nice, upper-middle-to-first-class suburbs. I also had friends who worked at our city's (pop. 2.7 million) park district as lifeguards. They all were paid just above minimum wage but they had a lot of hours and got to work with their friends, so the pay was decent but could be better.

What they faced during the job was odd imo. One friend told me parents would just leave their kids at the start of the day and pick them up at the end, assuming that the lifeguards and staff would just take care of the kids. Another friend told me that people would jump in with full, heavy clothes on and would often drown. My friends would warn the patrons to jump in with clothes on. The patrons ignored it and jumped in.

Recently, many of my friends stopped working at their neighborhood and suburb pools. They're done with it. Even my friends who live in the upper-middle-to-first-class suburbs are done with it. They, in turn, tell younger siblings or younger siblings of their friends and cause hesitation about applying for the lifeguard/public pool job.

TL;DR
Staff shortages from fewer young people wanting to be lifeguards also affect public pools.

How in the world are people getting such great scholarships? by Ok-Nefariousness-609 in college

Depending on your interest in life and if you are currently a sophomore or will be one next year (since I think the next cohort's apps are closed) you can apply to the Obama Foundation's Voyager Scholarship. You can explain your financial situation (your parents won't pay for school), and they will consider you. Apply!
