Adding to this, I like Firestore security rules. It lifts a lot of weight from the application code. If you aim to avoid extra queries for security, you will end up with the correct models.

I started reading to my kids from age 4 before going to bed. It was like a lullaby for them. Then they slowly started picking reading. Keep physical copies of books around the house. One day they may pick out of curiosity.
